The Spanish “Fermat’s Room” is the latest in the enduringly popular puzzle thriller genre, which sees characters trapped and being forced to solve enigmas in order to avoid inventively gruesome fates. Here, writers and directors Luis Piedrahita and Rodrigo Sopeña (previously better known for their television work) do take a slightly different route, by attempting to work mathematics and philosophy into the mix, while trying to keep viewers on the edges of their seats. The film is being released on region 2 DVD by Revolver, and comes complete with deleted scenes, making of featurettes, plus special features on the film’s effects.
The film introduces its four main characters, all of whom receive a challenge to solve a complex mathematical problem, which if solved will result in them being invited to an exclusive and remote gathering. All are given the names of famous mathematicians – Galois (Pedro Almodóvar regular Alejo Sauras), Pascal (Santi Millán, “Idiot Love”), Hilbert (Lluís Homar, another Almodóvar [...]

Spanish horror has been prominent on the international scream scene of late, with the likes of “REC” and “The Orphanage” offering another alternative to the increasingly bland tide of remakes flowing sluggishly from Hollywood. “Sexy Killer”, from director Miguel Martí (previously responsible for comedies such as “Fin de curso” and “Slam”) sees the country taking an enthusiastic stab at that most notoriously difficult to nail of subgenres, namely the comedy horror. Hitting the right balance between laughs and scares, whilst delivering enough gore groceries to keep the fans happy is no easy task, though Martí manages to pull it off thanks to a sense of wild abandon, and an anything goes approach which mixes genre references with pop culture campery and a charmingly psychotic sensibility.
The film gets off to a good start, with a little bit of homicidal role reversal as a “Scream” mask wearing would-be peeping tom ends up being brutally dispatched whilst trying to scare some naked [...]

“Labyrinth of Passion” is a new Tartan release of an early 1982 effort from internationally acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodovar. The film is a scandalous look at love and sex in early 1980s Madrid which throws off the shackles of good taste and proudly celebrates excess and the alternative ways of life, which at the time were condemned and despised by the country’s conservative majority.
Although it is difficult to summarise the plot without giving away too many of the eccentric twists and turns, the film basically revolves around Sexilia (actress Cecilia Roth, who went on to work with the director on “All About my Mother” and other films), a young female sex addict whose father works in artificial insemination and whose psychiatrist seems almost as crazy as she is. Her life becomes even stranger after she meets and falls in love with Riza Niro (Imanol Arias), a seemingly gay punk rocker who is actually the son of an emperor [...]

One of the residents of a declining little village in northern Spain comes across an ancient cave in the nearby hills. Hoping to revitalize the town through the potential touristic possibilities of a prehistoric cave, the locals call upon Speleologist Esteban (Carmello Gomez), who arrives in the region to investigate the cave with his assistant Pedro (Mariano Alameda) and girlfriend Gabi (Judith Diakhate). However, while waiting for Esteban and Pedro to return from the cave, Gabi is brutally assaulted. Delirious with rage, Esteban and Pedro set out in search of Gabi’s assailant, but a case of mistaken identity leads to a tragic act of violence.
The fallout from this spins the protagonists’ lives out of control, particularly after they run across opportunistic cop Tomas (Vicente Romero) and his straight-arrow, world-weary boss Amadeo (Celso Bugallo, “The Sea Inside”), who also happens to be his father-in-law. Thus begins “La Noche De Los Girasoles” (”The Night of the Sunflowers”), the debut feature film [...]

The 1930s were a terrible time in Spain. Mired in a vicious civil war that saw both Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia use Spain as a practice ground for WWII, the country descended into Fascist repression under Generalissimo Francisco Franco. Against this incendiary backdrop, we have Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth,” a visually arresting film about the power of imagination and the strength of youth.
The film opens with eleven-year-old Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) traveling with her pregnant mother to meet Ofelia’s new stepfather, an army captain named Vidal (Sergi Lopez, “Dirty Pretty Things”) at a military camp deep in the Spanish forests. During the trip, we learn that Ofelia really likes reading fairytales, something her mother chides her about, but which will soon become her greatest weapon. Upon reaching the camp, Captain Vidal is revealed to be an intimidating and cruel lout who wants nothing to do with Ofelia, and is more concerned with killing leftist rebels than [...]

I would guess that by now most of you caught the frenetic commercials for this unique horror “fest” that appeared to be a scary new ride at Great Adventure. The fest played at only 500 venues across the United States from Friday November 17th to Tuesday the 21st. I originally planned on seeing all eight films advertised, but life being as busy as it is (and my lack of interest in “Snoop Dog’s House of Horror”), I had to make do with three. Luckily, they were the three I most wanted to see.
I must say that as an idea, Courtney Solomon’s concept for a new indie release strategy is a clever one. Take several small budget horror films that would never get a theatrical release on their own and collect them together as a group to increase their market value. It’s like those DVD horror packs you see in the Wal-Mart bins, only slightly more helpful to the filmmakers [...]

“The Deal” was shot mainly (if not entirely) in Spain with, in all likelihood, Spanish money, but stars a couple of somewhat well-known American actors in order to sell the film to American cable TV stations and Blockbuster Video. The presence of Penelope Ann Miller and Henry Thomas, though far removed from their Hollywood A-movie glory days, are enough insurance to see the film land in English-speaking markets and fool foreign market into believing “The Deal” is a Hollywood movie. But when all is said and done, “The Deal” is a Spanish film with an American accent. That little moment in Investment in Moviemaking 101 out of the way, let’s get to the film at hand.
“The Deal” stars Penelope Ann Miller (”The Relic”) as Laura Martin, who when we first meet her, is a loving wife and mother to an adorable 7-year old girl and a wine-making husband name Oscar (Andoni Gracia). After Oscar and the daughter are killed [...]

(Movie Review by Donnie Saxton) One of the most confusing things about “The Life,” a film fraught with confusion, is what to call it. Upon theatrical release it was called “Yo Puta,” presumably because the film is based on a novel of the same name. Between then and the recent DVD release, a decision was made to market it overseas under the title “Whore.” That name apparently found disfavor and thus when it reached my eyes, it had been renamed yet again, this time as “The Life”. Ultimately, it matters little what the movie is called as long as the DVD jacket comes with the appropriate warning label — “May cause drowsiness.”
“The Life,” directed by Maria Lidon, purports to take a realistic look at the “the life” of a prostitute by incorporating real life hookers into the movie. Whether this film was meant to be a form of documentary is unclear. What is clear is that the majority of screen [...]

The Mexican movie “Cronos” is undoubtedly one of the better horror films of the 1990s. At times unsettling, at other times moving and compassionate, this is a vampire film that never conforms to any of the given rules or wisdom regarding the genre. Beautifully made, this is a true gem; a thoughtful and creepy experience awaits those who seek it out.
The story follows aging Mexican antiques dealer Jesus Gris (Federico Luppi, also in the director’s “The Devil’s Backbone”), who comes across an odd, beetle-shaped device in an old statue. As he inspects it, the artifact whirs to life, sprouting claws that dig into the flesh of his hand. The next day, Jesus finds himself feeling younger and more energetic than he has in years, a fact that he rightly attributes to the mysterious contraption.
However, this new vitality comes at a terrible price, as Jesus develops an uncontrollable thirst for human blood. His dark voyage of self-discovery is complicated [...]

The title of the Spanish film “Nobody Knows Anybody” is probably too appropriate for its own good. The movie, about a lonely man who gets drawn into a dangerous and elaborate game is reminiscent of David Fincher’s “The Game”, and indeed more than a couple of elements from Fincher’s movie finds their way into Mateo Gil’s 1999 film. Which isn’t a bad thing, since I count “The Game” as one of the best Head Trip movie of the ’90s, right next to another Fincher Head Trip movie called “Fight Club”.
This mystery-thriller stars Eduardo Noriega (”The Devil’s Backbone”) as Simon (pronounced “Simone”), a writer in Seville, Spain who is nursing doubts about his talent for the craft. As he struggles to write his novel, Simon does crossword puzzles for the local newspaper to earn money. One day he gets a cryptic and threatening message on his answering machine telling him to expect clues to a mysterious puzzle. As the Holy [...]

The new horror movie “Darkness”, not to be confused with “Darkness Falls” (although both films share similar gimmicks involving darkness), stars Anna Paquin (”X-Men”) as a teen whose family moves into an old house in the Spanish countryside — or “the sticks” as Paquin’s Regina calls it. The house, as it turns out, has no known previous owner, and it becomes a mystery how Regina’s family managed to buy it in the first place, since there’s no record of its construction anywhere.
As the screenplay by director Jaume Balaguero and co-writer Fernando de Felipe slowly progresses toward the inevitable bloody conclusion (complete with bleeding walls), we learn that ghostly spirits of children in school uniforms are haunting Regina’s little brother Paul. Worst, Regina’s father Mark (Iain Glen) is starting to show signs of psychosis, and her mother Mary (Lena Olin) seesaws from unconcern mother to bitch and back again.
Having seen Cameron Crowe’s American remake of Spaniard Alejandro Amenabar’s “Open Your Eyes” first, it’s inevitable that I would make the mistake of comparing “Open Your Eyes” to “Vanilla Sky” and not the other way around (as is the correct way). When considering the two movies, it’s not a question of what did Crowe change, but rather what he didn’t change. The two movies are almost identical, and Crowe has essentially shot his film using Amenabar and Mateo Gil’s original screenplay with some additions of his own. And the fact that co-star Penelope Cruz plays the same character in both movies is probably admittance on Crowe’s part that he’s not trying to invent the wheel, but merely improve on it.
“Open Your Eyes” stars Eduardo Noriega (”The Devil’s Backbone”) as Cesar, a 25-year old playboy who treats his women like dirt.
Guillermo del Toro’s “The Devil’s Backbone” wants to be an old-fashioned ghost story, but it’s really just old-fashioned, with some excellent special effects making intermittent appearances to liven things up. For its first 50 minutes or so, “Backbone” plays out like a generic ghost story, with all the filmmaking conventions of the genre followed to the letter.
There’s the usual slow pans to reveal the ghost; the ghost that appears behind a character; and of course, the now-you-see-him-now-you-don’t trick, where a character sees a ghost, is distracted by something offscreen, only to look back and the ghost is gone! (Sigh. I really wish someone would retire this particular gimmick.) Because the film handles its ghost elements so poorly, “Backbone” loses any right to call itself “scary.” Director/co-writer Guillermo (”Blade 2″) might have fare better if he had chosen to make “Backbone” a dramatic film with some supernatural elements instead.
The film is about an orphan name Carlos (Fernando Tielve) who is [...]
