(Movie Review by Laurence Bush) “Speed Racer” is a visual oil spill, lushly colored, slick and thin. Doing a live action, big budget version of a 1960’s Japanese animated series sounds doomed to failure. The original Speed Racer comic books had some depth and characterization, but the anime, especially the American culturally neutral version was just ocular fun: bright colors, speeding exotics, ingenious gadgets. With the anime as a departure point, the writers/directors Wachowski crashed the plot into the fiery wall of cliché death, but it wasn’t all bad –really.
The fight scenes, a Wachowski specialty, and the special effects were gaudy, comic bookish and extreme but that was the intent. They are clearly the best bits of the film, and the attention to graphic detail made fine results. Even this is a let down in the end, because the effects did not look significantly better than the previews on a big screen television, and they were [...]

It cost north of $150 million to make, and scored a meager $18 million in its opening weekend. This, despite a blitzkrieg of advertising on and offline, and some serious buzz in the fan community. Who didn’t geekgasm when the very first picture of the Mach 5 was released? I’m not even a fan of the original cartoon, and even I was intrigued, so I can only imagine how you Speed Racer freaks felt upon seeing it.
“Speed Racer” was originally estimated to have pulled in an average $20.2 million in its opening weekend, but even that number is now in doubt. Actual sales figures now put the film’s first-week take at $18.6 million. To add insult to injury, the Ashton Kutcher-Cameron Diaz romantic comedy “What Happens in Vegas” leap frogged “Speed Racer” into the second spot with its $20.7 million first-weekend take.
While domestic box office doesn’t tell the whole tale, the film’s overseas figures aren’t exactly astounding, either. The [...]

Take this for what you will: The Wachowski Brothers’ “Speed Racer’, their first movie since the third installment of their “Matrix” trilogy in 2003, couldn’t handle Iron Man’s repulsor rays, opening at #2 with an approximate $20 million take, about the same amount as the Ashton Kutcher-Cameron Diaz romantic comedy “What Happens in Vegas”. Meanwhile, Jon Favreau’s “Iron Man” continues to hold steady, taking in another $50 million in its second week of release, for a 2-week total of $177 at the U.S. box office alone.
The fact that “Speed Racer” couldn’t outpace “Iron Man” is not as big of a surprise as the fact that it came in toe-to-toe with “What Happens in Vegas”, beating the other movie out by a few hundred thousand despite arriving in nearly 400 more theaters. No doubt “Vegas” took all the women in the audience, while “Speed” had to fight for the table scraps of “Iron Man”.

A new poster for the Wachowski Brothers’ “Speed Racer”, this one prominently featuring Emile Hirsch as Speed Racer and the character Taejo Togokhan, played by South Korean pop star and actor Rain, aka Jung Ji Hoon, who will soon be doing another movie with the Wachowskis on their “Ninja Assassin” flick. Rain is a big star in Asia, even in Japan, where this poster comes from, if my familiarity with Japanese writing is any indication. Apparently the poster is Chinese. My Asian language recognition skills blow.
“Speed Racer” opens May 9, 2008.

I know what you’re thinking: “Wait, are you sure? A four-minute long movie trailer? Doesn’t that mean it’s no longer a trailer, but is instead a clip”? Well, no, it really is a movie trailer that is four minutes long for the Wachowskis’ upcoming “Speed Racer” movie. There are a lot of stuff you’ve already seen in the countless versions of the trailer that have been released so far, plus more. There would have to be more, wouldn’t there, this being 4 minutes long and all? See it for yourself below.
Speed Racer and his brood go go go for the gold May 9, 2008. This thing is going to sell like hotcakes, so if you plan on seeing it in the first week, you best get used to ordering tickets online, or getting to the theater before the mall opens.
Yahoo! Movies has got a better, more fluid motion of the below trailer at their site if you’re so inclined.

I’ve been seeing commercials for this for a while now, and here’s the video of the “Speed Racer” featurette that was shown on the Esurance website. You’ll notice that throughout the interviews, you don’t see the Wachowski brothers themselves, although you see a lot of people talk about them. I wonder why that is? Is it because one of the brothers is now a sista? Anyhoo, it’s still cool, and gives you even more insight on what a crazy and wacky experience this movie is going to be. If this thing doesn’t sell like hotcakes to the kids, I’ll eat my shoe.

As if the Wachowskis’ “Speed Racer” couldn’t get anymore, shall we say, experimental friendly, they had to go and release this 3D movie poster that is, yup, movable. Or, er, 3D layered. Or something. The point is, you put your mouse over the poster, you left-click and hold, and moving the mouse also moves the poster sideways. The poster showed up on the net a long time ago when someone snapped a picture, but this is the actual poster that can be manipulated. It’s not going to change the way you think of the world, of course, but it’s kinda cool. Check it out below.

The pictures will appear in an upcoming issue of Entertainment Weekly, including an article that talks more about how the film was shot, the Wachowski brothers’ motivations, and maybe why one of them decided to become a woman. Okay, probably not that last part, but one can only hope.
Originally titled Mach Go Go Go in Japan, the TV show was brought to America in 1967 and renamed Speed. Now 41 years later, the same two guys who brought us The Matrix are back to bring us even more groundbreaking, edge-of-your-seat entertainment in the live-action adaptation of the beloved cartoon series.
Since the American character posters for “Speed Racer” showed off the American cast, of course the Asian version of the character posters would go the Asian route. Specifically the Korean posters, which shows off South Korean singer Rain (making his Hollywood debut) as the driver Taejo, and Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada (”The Last Samurai”), who will play Mr. Musha. Rain must have made quite an impression on the set, because “Racer’s” directors, the Wachowski Brothers, have already set him up to play the lead in their upcoming ninja movie.

So what’s “Speed Racer”? It’s the story of, well, Speed Racer, who owns a car called the Mach 5 that can jump, go under water and clear trees, not to mention ordering at drive-thrus without having to read the menu. No, really. Anyways, when Speed is not racing, he’s battling villians with his girlfriend Trixie, kid brother Spritle and pet monkey Chim-Chim. What, you don’t have a pet monkey?

Luckily for them, it’s a bloody damn good trailer. There are a couple of really cute sequences, most of them involving Speed as a kid daydreaming about winning races. Funny and cute. How could you get better? Oh yeah, there are also all those crazy, acid-dropping races to take in. Seriously, this thing is going to be off the hook, as the kids say. (Kids still say that, right?)

I was surprised when it was announced that the Wachowskis were making a “Speed Racer” live-action movie, because I just don’t see how it would work, or how much of a movie it would be if you were older than, say, 10. Isn’t it all just car racing and what have you? But hey, the trailer certainly looks good, and from everything I’ve seen, including these two new international trailers, the movie has a lot going for it. Or at least, you can pay your $20 for your ticket and bucket of pop corn and hallucinate for a couple of hours. Fair trade, right?

When Speed turns down a lucrative and tempting offer from Royalton Industries, he not only infuriates the company’s maniacal owner but uncovers a terrible secret-some of the [...]

It’s heeeeeeeeeeeere. That’s right, the Wachowski Brothers’ “Speed Racer” has gotten itself a trailer and it’s now available for your viewing pleasure over at AOL Movies by clicking here, or head below to see it now. You have to see this thing in HD to appreciate all the green screen work. And oh yeah, if you have an HD monitor, that’ll work even better. Damn it looks purty. Weird as hell, but purty.
The masterminds behind the ‘Matrix’ bring the beloved ’60s anime cartoon to life on the big screen. Forget the bleak Neo-centric vision of the future; this is more Andy Warhol meets the Jetsons. Watch Speed as he battles corruption in the racing industry and his mysterious rival Racer X.
Starring Emile Hirsch, Susan Sarandon, John Goodman, Christina Ricci, Matthew Fox, and directed by Larry Wachowski and Andy Wachowski.
Avoid the speeding ticket May 9th, 2008.

If you thought the behind-the-scenes Entertainment Tonight video I posted on “Speed Racer” gave you a good idea of what the Wachowski Brothers had planned with the movie, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Here are some very, very groovy looking “Speed Racer” images courtesy of USA Today. In a word: Leave the bong at home, kids, cause you ain’t gonna need it!

Wow. Speed Racer. It looks like it’s going to be a groovy little film that will have absolutely no basis in reality whatsoever. But hey, if you want to do a movie like that, what more perfect a pair to helm it than the Wachowski brothers? Or is that Wachowski siblings? (Now that, you know, one of them is no longer a brother as per rumors.) In any case, the folks over at Entertainment Tonight got an interview with Matthew Fox, who plays Racer X in the movie, which also includes some scenes from the green screen heavy movie.
Hurtling down the track, careening around, over and through the competition, Speed Racer is a natural behind the wheel. Born to race cars, Speed is aggressive, instinctive and, most of all, fearless. His only real competition is the memory of the brother he idolized-the legendary Rex Racer – whose death in a race has left behind a legacy that Speed is driven [...]

Speed Racer: Susan Sarandon, who says all she does is “make pancakes” on the movie, has some interesting to say about the film — or to be exact, how the Wachowski brothers will be shooting it. Says Sarandon:
“They’re doing something where they’re layering film so that the front and the back are in focus like a cartoon and they’re also doing two dimensional and three dimensional stuff and mixing and everything is very, very saturated with some new kind of film, so they actually have to treat the actors in some way so we can hold our own with the background. So it’s every color that wasn’t in The Matrix is seriously in this film.”
I don’t know what that means but I take it it’s groovy and whatnot.

“Speed Racer”: Racer X gets a girlfriend, and her name is Nayo Wallace, who will play Matthew Fox’s cinematic girlfriend Minx. Does it matter to the movie’s plot? Probably not.
“Smallville” TV Series: Clark Kent’s Kryptonian cousin Supergirl will be played by Canadian blondie Laura Vandervoort. I still want to know when Clark will leave that frakkin’ farm already. Seriously, how long is this guy gonna stay there?
“Sunshine”: Danny Boyle’s oft-delayed sci-fi actioner gets some DVD specs.
Bai Ling: Remember when Chinese actress Bai Ling used to be respectable actress? Those days are long gone, baby.
“Doomsday”: A new pic (although I think I’ve seen it before; have I even blogged about it already?) from Neil Marshall’s “Doomsday” arrives via. Click on the thumbnail below to see it:
