I don’t know if Felicia Hardy is going to be a villain in Spider-Man 4, but the rumors for a female part are so ubiqitous, Rachel McAdams and Julia Stiles having been rumored in as many days, that there must be some large role that necessitates the inclusion of a well-known actress. The rumors give off a lot of heat, but so far there has been no real light shed on the part. Now Deadline Hollywood is reporting that producers have approached Ann Hathaway for a starring role in the film. Since Kirsten Dunst is returning as Mary Jane Watson, the Black Cat seems to be the most obvious fit, given the prevalence of rumors.
Anne Hathaway is a quality actor and would be a real boon to the film, having been nominated for a best acting Academy Award, even though a lot of her best parts involve trying to define the role of a woman in contemporary society. One of [...]

With Rachel McAdams having already denied rumors that she was talking to producers of “Spider-Man 4″ to play Felicia Hardy aka The Black Cat in Sam Raimi’s latest Spidey film, the question remains: is the Black Cat really going to be in the movie, and if so, who will play her? According to the blokes at UGO, “Bourne” actress Julia Stiles is now “talking” with producers about the role. UGO doesn’t really say who they learned this little news from, just that they “have learned”, which, er, could be totally bullshit, and probably is.
So would Julia Stiles fit the role of the Black Cat? Eh, I don’t know. Stiles’ biggest role to date was that dancing movie “Save the Last Dance”. She’s been in a ton of movies, usually playing teenagers or 20-something characters, and has never really gotten her due, mostly because, well, though she’s a decent enough actress, she’s never really wowed anyone. Even though she’s been in [...]

See, this is why we don’t “break” movie news on the site — it sucks when you’re wrong and your fellow movie bloggers come down on you like hungry little vultures looking for a piece of meat. That, and no one ever sends me anything worth breaking. Ahem. Anyways, remember that news that had Rachel McAdams meeting with the Spidey producers for the role of the Black Cat in “Spider-Man 4″? Apparently all untrue.
McAdams tells EW:
“That’s a total rumor, I have to say. I was hanging out in Toronto the other day and someone came up to me and said, ‘I just heard you’re doing Spider-Man 4.‘ And I said, ‘Really? No one told me!’ It’s not true.”
EW then reached out to Sony, who confirms the totally made up Internet rumor.
Oh well. McAdams as the Black Cat would have been an odd choice anyway (like I said, she just doesn’t seem the “type” for such a role), but [...]

Hey, I’ve heard of worst rumors than the lovely Rachel McAdams in a Spidey movie. Then again, I kinda wish they hadn’t gotten rid of Dallas Bryce Howard’s Gwen Stacy (one of the brighter light in the much-maligned “Spider-Man 3″, if you ask me), but what are you gonna do, right? Citing “reliable sources”, Mania says that McAdams (soon to be seen in “Sherlock Holmes”) has “met with producers” to play Felicia Hardy, aka The Black Cat in Sam Raimi’s continuation of the franchise.
In the comics, the curvaceous The Black Cat was a burglar named Felicia Hardy who crossed Spider-Man, ended up becoming smitten with him, eventually reforming, and now works part-time as a crimefighter. Her character was never really a big part of Spidey’s Rogues Gallery, and from the start she was always more of a Catwoman character to his Batman. The two even shacked up for a time, with Spidey revealing his secret identity to her.
Besides the potential [...]

Looks like the Spidey 4 rumor train is moving at full speed now, what with the Raimster set to start directing this thing soon for a 2011 release. We already know that actor Dylan Baker has confirmed that his character, Spidey’s one-armed professor Curt Connors will return for Spidey 4, but we don’t know in what capacity — another limited cameo, or something more? According to the guys at MarketSaw, it’s definitely something more.
Here’s what they said:
We all pretty much knew that either The Lizard and/or Carnage would be in this movie and now we have word that it will be The Lizard ONLY. No multiple villains. Again, strong source here. Of course, things could change – but it is highly doubtful.
This is definitely good news, especially for everyone who thought having no less than three villains in the last Spidey film was a tad too much (which might just be everyone). One villain will allow for more character [...]

So what do we know about “Spider-Man 4″ so far? We know that Sam Raimi is a liar when he tells us they haven’t decided on a villain yet, especially when Gary Ross has been chugging through the script for a while now. We know that Tobey Maguire is coming back as Spider-Man, and Kirsten Dunst will also return as spunky Mary Jane Watson. We know that Bruce Campbell will make his usual appearance in the fourth movie, though it may or may not be a bigger role than usual. And we know that Professor Curt Connors, played by Dylan Baker, will also be back.
The news of Connors’ involvement in the fourth Spidey film comes from Baker himself, who was doing press rounds for his horror movie “Trick R Treat” when the subject came up. According to Baker, he got a call earlier in the day (presumably from his agent or manager) confirming his character’s return to the Spidey franchise, [...]

Bruce Campbell has previously said that he’s due for a “meaty” role in Sam Raimi’s upcoming “Spider-Man 4″, but he wouldn’t say what that meaty role is. Some have speculated that the role could be that of a villain, but certainly not another one-and-done cameo as in the previous three Spidey movies. When asked about Campbell’s statements, director Sam Raimi seems to have confirmed it. Seems, anyway.
As you may or may not know, Raimi and Campbell go way back, which is why Campbell appears in all three “Spider-Man” movies in small, but clever (and some would say, awesome) cameos. They go so far back, in fact, that Raimi loves to torture his bud in their movies together. So when Raimi says that sure, Campbell will have a “meaty” role in the fourth movie, it could mean anything from, “Yes, Bruce Campbell will be a villain, or some other major character” to “I’m gonna put Campbell into a ‘meat’ suit and [...]

There is the inevitable temptation while working on a sequel to do more and more in order to trump the prior films. Make it flashier and flashier. Fill in the sides. Soon the film becomes so bloated that it sinks beneath its own weight. I don’t necessarily need to tell you the problems with Spider-Man 3; there have been enough autopsies done that the problems have been well-covered. What is worth a discussion is what that means for Spider-Man 4.
Raimi is a talented filmmaker, but some filmmakers abstain from any self-correction, especially when it pertains to a series that is ostensibly bigger than any one man. But at least, according to the Coventry Telegraph, Raimi is committed to fixing the problems. As well as admitting that the profusion of villains detracted from the experience, he also talked about the lessons he learned from Drag Me to Hell:
“I think I’ve learned about the importance of getting to the point and the [...]

The original Spider-Man (2002) film was released to rave reviews, garnering a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the sequel (2004) was even more critically acclaimed with an average of 94%. Now, the similarity between these two movies (besides the cast, setting, and name) is that each one only had one villain, allowing a great deal of focus on just him and Spider-Man. Now, the biggest difference between this incredibly popular sequel and the “threequel” was that the third movie had three villains. Oh, yeah, and the ratings were different, too. About 32% different.
So, what was the cause of this? Is there simply a curse on these so-called “threequels” (like the 34% drop from x2 to X-Men: The Last Stand), possibly because “threequel” is such a stupid word? Or perhaps it’s because Sam Raimi packed as many villains as he could into a movie, which was easily the biggest complaint critics had regarding the movie. But that may oversimplify the problem: [...]

Bruce Campbell in “Spider-Man 4″? Sure, probably. It is being directed by Sam Raimi, after all, and Raimi and Campbell go together like peanut butter and a fake guy watching Desperate Housewives alone at nights with the lights turned down so the neighbors don’t see. The latest rumor comes from Access Hollywood and has the Chinned One not only showing up in “Spidey 4″, but also playing a major role this time around.
Spider-Man 4” will start shooting in January 2010, Bruce Campbell told Access Hollywood at his “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” premiere on Saturday.
The actor, who has a long relationship with director Sam Raimi via his lead role in the “Evil Dead” trilogy, made memorable cameos in the first three “Spider-Man” films.
However, he may have a bigger role this time around. Bruce told Access that in the next installment in the superhero franchise, he’s been told he has a major part – but didn’t yet know anything [...]

Then again, just because Columbia Pictures has brought in writer/director Gary Ross to take a crack at the “Spider-Man 4″ script doesn’t necessarily mean anything he writes will be overtly obvious. More likely than not, Ross, a character-driven pic guy, was brought in to beef up the characters, since I doubt he’s your go-to guy for superhero action scenes. His past relationship with star Tobey Maguire helps — the duo worked together as star and writer/director on both “Pleasantville” and “Seabiscuit”.
THR says Ross is the latest high-profile scribe brought in to work on the superhero movie, the fourth in the franchise currently set for a 2011 release. A couple of people who have already taken turns on the script include James Vanderbilt (”Zodiac”) and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire.

Those hoping to see Spider-Man battling the living vampire in his latest outing (his fourth, in case you’re not keeping track) should stop hoping right now. Or so says Spider-Man producer Todd Black, who tells the New York Post that Morbius will not be the latest sequel’s villain, and instead the villain will be very tied in with the city of New York. Hmm, who could that be? Also, Black all but confirms that Kristen Dunst will return as Mary Jane despite lots of rumors (and dare I say it, hope?) to the contrary.
More bullet points from the NYP straight from Black’s mouth:
- Besides no Morbius, forget a wedding between MJ and Peter.
- The villain has not been decided yet, but according to Black, he will be “a big part of New York.” (Emphasis mine.)
So, the villain will be very New York, and will be big? Obviously he’s either hinting at the Kingpin, or it’s all just one big coincidence. [...]

Between you and me and the three other guys who read this site regularly, let me confess that I’ve just about given up on an “Evil Dead 4″. At this point, I think it’s very obvious that Raimi just doesn’t have the passion for the franchise anymore, even though he keeps talking about making it when he has the time. Alas, that time is nowhere in sight, as he just wrapped “Drag me to Hell” and according to Raimi himself, “Spider-Man 4″ is somewhere on the horizon with a February 2010 start date. I suppose he could direct something between then and now, but a movie as huge as “Spider-Man 4″ will probably require at least six months of prep time.
Speaking to the LATimes, Raimi said this about Spidey 4:
The next installment beings shooting, I believe, in February 2010. As far as we’re concerned, that’s no time left because they need so much time to work on the screenplay, casting [...]

Let’s face it, at this point an “Evil Dead 4″ movie is looking less and less likely. After all, why would Sam Raimi, who seems to be more businessman than filmmaker nowadays (how many movies does Sammy have on the remake chopping block again?), could make more money and spend less time doing it just to reboot the franchise with a younger director, as he’s been talking about? In this interview with SciFiWire, ol Sam all but kills the idea of a fourth “Evil Dead” movie. And oh yeah, he also talks about wanting to bring Kristen Dunst back to “Spider-Man 4″ for God knows why.
Raimi tells SciFiWire ala Dunst and “Spider-Man 4″:
“I’m hoping that she is going to come aboard, and I’ve got a meeting coming up with her,” Raimi said in a group interview last week in Beverly Hills, Calif., where he was promoting his upcoming horror film Drag Me to Hell. “I think she would like to.
Here’s the deal about Sam Raimi and his insistence on remaking his “Evil Dead” franchise: if a studio was talking about it without Raimi’s knowledge, we’d all be in a tizzy over the news, but since Raimi is the one talking about remaking his own movie, we sort of just threw our hands in the air. So, during an appearance at SXSW, Raimi talked seriously about rebooting “Evil Dead” (so goodbye, “Evil Dead 4″?) and what’s going on with “Spider-Man 4″.
On the “Evil Dead” reboot (via IGN):
“I have talked with my partners about having a young director come in and remake Evil Dead,” he revealed. “That film was made in 16mm on a shoestring budget and blown up to 35mm. The visual effects are crumby, it was done in mono, not even stereo, let alone 5.1. What you could do with it now would be so much better.
“I think if you had a new director using the full power of [...]

Well we sort of knew it had to happen. Let’s face it, Marvel’s initial idea of releasing both “Captain America” and “The Avengers” in the same year a few months part was way too optimistic. Today, the studio has revised their release schedule, and now instead of “The First Avenger: Captain America” and “The Avengers” hitting theaters in 2011 two months apart, Captain America will land first in 2011, while the Avengers will have to wait until 2012 to assemble.
In Thunder God news, “Thor” has also been delayed, moving from its original July 16, 2010 date to June 17, 2011. “Iron Man 2″, originally the companion superhero film for “Thor”, remains in its original May 7, 2010. I guess Marvel knows a hot item when they see it, and sees no reason to mess around with ol Shellhead’s dates. Now instead of “Iron Man 2″ and “Thor”, it’ll be “The First Avenger: Captain America” and “Thor” at the multiplexes in [...]

After all the hooping and hollerin’ and all the fussing, it looks like Randy the Ram is going to be taking on Tony Stark and his magical iron suit after all, despite previous reports to the contrary. According to the trades, Rourke’s people have officially confirmed that the actor has indeed finished up negotiations with Marvel to play the armored villain in “Iron Man 2″.
THR doesn’t say if Rourke has since been offered more than the pitiful $250,000 for the role that got everyone all afluttered when it was leaked a while back, just that the deal is now in place and Rourke will indeed play the villain in the comic book sequel, directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr. as the armored superhero.
According to the UK’s Guardian, Rourke’s “Iron Man” villain will be based on two comic book characters -– Whiplash, who flies around on a board and uses a whip (hence the name, I suppose), [...]

The chances are pretty good. Or at least, that’s the latest “Spider-Man 4″ rumor currently going around the net, courtesy of returning director Sam Raimi, who made a comment to Empire Magazine in their latest issue about who he would like to see as Spider-Man’s foe in the next movie. (Or is that next two movies? Since word is that parts 4 and 5 will be shot back-to-back.) Morbius, for those who don’t know, is a vampire character in the Marvel Universe, and one of his main foes is Spider-Man, and a certain lizard…
Here’s what Raimi said to Empire:
“I like it in the Marvel comics when Spider-Man fights Morbius,” said Raimi. “He’s really cool. A vampire! I like that combination of superhero plus supernatural.”
So the guy who is directing and writing the movie says, “Yes, I would like to see Spidey fight Morbius”, and it’s not gonna happen? Um, this is the guy who is doing the movie, after all. [...]

To be honest with you, I haven’t a clue if this is good news or bad news for Spider-Man, but Columbia Pictures has hired Pulitzer Prize winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire to pen the next installment of Peter Parker and company. Lindsay-Abaire wouldn’t be the first writer on a comic book movie with a Pulitzer to his name; Michael Chabon, who wrote “Spider-Man 2″, also boasts the hardware. So what exactly qualifies Lindsay-Abaire to write a superhero movie about a teenager who gets bitten by a radioactive spider and now swings around New York fighting guys with metal tentacles? Well, he wrote a play called “Rabbit Hole” that starred Cynthia Nixon and Tyne Daly. Yeah.
More:
Lindsay-Abaire has said in interviews that his plays tend to be “peopled with outsiders in search of clarity,” which would put his work on sympathetic terms with Peter Parker, who in his classic incarnation is the perpetual outsider.
The choice of scribe also signals that that filmmakers are [...]

So did I tell ya this was gonna happen, or did I tell ya this was gonna happen? Yeah, I told ya this was gonna happen. Mind you, not that the idea of Sam Raimi directing a Jack Ryan reboot is up there with an “Evil Dead 4″ movie, but it would have been interesting to see what a genre fella like Raimi could do with a character like uptight CIA guy Jack Ryan. Now we’ll never know, because Raimi has confirmed that, because of his new commitment to making “Spider-Man 4″ and “Spider-Man 5″, he won’t have time to re-invent Ryan and company.
More:
Raimi revealed to us during the chat that he’d be willing to shoot “Spider-Man 4” and “Spider-Man 5” at the same time, and also spoke about the futures of Kirsten Dunst and The Lizard. And, as he explained, that doesn’t leave him any time to reboot Tom Clancy’s tale of America’s top CIA operative.
