The studio had low-balled J.J. Abrams’ reboot of the sci-fi franchise at $50 million, which you have to take with a grain of salt, as studios usually lowball their big movies so they can crow about the film surpassing “expectations” later on. Paramount will get to do just that when the numbers for “Star Trek” rolls in, because right now it’s looking pretty good. The film, which chronicles the earlier exploits of the U.S.S. Enterprise’s familiar crew, landed at first place with an impressive $76.5 million dollar opening in its debut weekend. The take includes $4 million from the Thursday Midnight showings, and another $8 million or so from IMAX screenings. You can read our reviews for “Star Trek” here and here.
The week’s only other big opening, the counter-programming comedy “Next Day Air” opened in sixth place with $4 million. Not bad for a comedy with no named stars. Last week’s #1 movie, the “X-Men” prequel “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” fell [...]

Remember when “The Matrix” destroyed our senses with that bullet-time commercial and the question that had us all asking, “What is the Matrix?” Nothing has come that close yet, but here are a couple of movies with big-time hype behind them: the latest teasers for “The Fast and Furious 4″, and our very first teasers for “G.I. Joe”, “Land of the Lost”, and “Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen”. These are the ones that showed up over the Saturday weekend, so who knows how many will actually run on Sunday. I’ll add to the list as they show up.

What would a sci-fi week in review be without a Stargate or X-Files sequel news? Well it would be pretty damn boring, that’s for sure. The previous week’s sci-fi movie and TV news also includes a huge helping of solid casting news about Joss Whedon’s new FOX show Dollhouse, which stars Eliza Dushku and now, a couple of more castmembers from Whedon’s previous shows. And finally, some Star Wars and BSG news as well.

Fans of FOX’s hit medical drama House may still be getting used to star Jennifer Morrison’s new blond do on the show, but Star Trek geeks who have no idea who she is will be getting a load of the next hot sci-fi favorite next year when Jennifer Morrison jumps onto the U.S.S. Enterprise in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot. Morrison has already been confirmed as joining the cast, but no one knows what role she’ll be playing. Speculation is that she’ll be assaying the Yeoman Rand part, but Abrams seems to have shot that one down. Now the guys over at SyFy Portal have a new theory, and let’s just say that she and William Riker has something in common — they’re both Number Ones!
More:
New reports have surfaced that Morrison will play the first officer of the USS Enterprise under Capt. Pike.

With all the recent casting news and rumors surrounding J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek 11 reboot, it’s easy to forget that filming on the movie has already begun! One of the first scenes being shot is a young Spock (played by Heroes’ Zachary Quinto) at a Vulcan Council meeting, where he is apparently on trial for something, or so it seems. ComingSoon has your first look as Quinto as young Spock via the site JFXOnline. And speaking of casting rumors, House star Jennifer Morrison has been confirmed as joining the cast, though her character remakes a mystery.
Here’s how one fellow on IMDB.com describes the plot of Trek 11:
The Romulans travel back in time. The Romulans then figure out where they are in the timeline, then decide to take advantage of the accident to kill Kirk’s father, to erase kirk from the timeline before he existed, thereby changing all of the TREK universe as a result. Thus SOMEHOW leaving Spock in a [...]

Try as he might, poor J.J. Abrams is going to learn that he can’t keep the Internet geeks out of his head forever. Sooner or later, they will find a way in, and once in, all his secrets will pour out. Come on, J.J., didn’t you learn ANYTHING from the debacle that was the “Cloverfield” mess? The more you try to keep it from us, the more we want to know. Muahahahhahahahaha. But I digress. Abrams’ take on Star Trek is now the latest net craze, and rumors of the plot have been steadily leaking, most notably the time travel plotline. Here is the latest, and involves something that should be very familiar to fans of The Original Series.
From SyFy Portal:
According to a new rumor story, Nero and other Romulans from around the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” time period, head back in time through the Guardian of Forever and kill Chris Pine’s Kirk. Somehow, an older Spock played [...]

Two more cast additions to J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek 11: Winona Ryder and Bruce Greenwood. Ryder will be playing the Vulcan mother of a young Spock, to be played by Zachary Quinto, while Greenwood would play Christopher Pike, the Enterprise’s first captain, a character that appeared in the very first Star Trek episode before giving way to Kirk and company. Ryder and Greenwood joins a cast that already includes Chris Pine as Kirk, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy, and Eric Bana as the Romulan villain Nero. And no, there is no truth to the rumor that I’m up for the role of young Sulu.
The movie, to follow the early days of the Enterprise crew and possibly involve time travel, was written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and will be directed by J.J. Abrams.
This is actually the second time in outer space that I know off for Ryder. The last time she shed her indie girl [...]

William Shatner is a blowhard. I think we can all agree to that. But he’s also Star Trek. You can’t say “Trek” without saying “Shatner”. But apparently J.J. Abrams, writer/director on the upcoming Trek 11 movie, can, because although he’s met with Shatner, Abrams has decided that his Trek movie has no room for Captain James T. Kirk. Or at least, not the guy who originally played him. No one is more surprised by this than Shatner, who tells the AP: “I couldn’t believe it. I’m not in the movie at all. Leonard, God bless his heart, is in, but not me.” Really, Shatner sounds dumbfounded, mystified, and more than a little sad that he’s been left out of Trek 11.
More:
Director J.J. Abrams announced last summer that Nimoy would reprise the role he originated opposite Shatner in the 1960s television show and played again in six big-screen adventures.
Abrams said Shatner probably would have a part in the film, which is [...]

So now the cast is finally complete, although I have to say that casting Karl Urban as the surly doctor Bones McCoy of the Enterprise was a bit of a surprise. I don’t exactly know the age of the original characters, but was Bones really that much older than everyone? Apparently so. The Hollywood Reporter officially announces the casting, along with Chris Pine as Kirk, but then again, if you’ve read this site or any other movie site, you probably already know that. Urban was actually up for the role of the Romulan baddie, the movie’s chief villain, but that role went to Eric Bana, who will play the nefarious Nero in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Trek reboot, aka Trek 11.
More:
The character of McCoy, originated by DeForest Kelley, didn’t trust advanced technology and frequently sparred with Spock in debates of logic vs. emotion. Bones also was responsible for several of “Trek’s” catchphases, including “He’s dead, Jim” and “Dammit Jim, I’m a [...]

Via Empire Online, here’s news that little known, but very much in demand actor Chris Pine has all but been confirmed as landing the much coveted role of young James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek 11 movie. Or at least that’s according to director Joe Carnahan (”Smokin’ Aces”), who writes in his blog about how Pine, who Carnahan has been trying to cast as the star in his upcoming crime movie “White Jazz”, has instead chosen to “go where no man has gone before”. But, says Carnahan, he still wants to work with the kid, namely in his other project, the Pablo Escobar movie “Killing Pablo”.
Here’s what Joe wrote:
The young man playing Junior Stemmons has opted to ‘go where no man has gone before’ and thus, had to bow out of WHITE JAZZ. I’ve been talking to him this past week and knew how tough the decision had to be for him. I don’t envy ever being [...]

According to Variety, Bana will be playing a villain name Nero, who, if the Trek 11 plot details we’ve heard are true, will be a Romulan determined to end Captain Kirk’s reign as the universe’s most eligible bachelor by time-traveling into the past to change the future. Bana will be joining a cast that already includes Anton Yelchin, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Leonard Nimoy.

It would appear that J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek 11 movie is picking up steam, with (possible) castings of all the younger versions of the Enterprise’s crew already announced. So if you have the good guys, what’s next? Oh right, the bad guys. According to IESB, they know who the bad guy is going to be, and who is going to play them. Maybe. The name they’re throwing around is Karl Urban, who recently starred as a Viking/Indian warrior in the period epic actioner “Pathfinder”. He was also in “Chronicles of Riddick” and can be seen in the upcoming “Black Water Transit”.
More from IESB:
The IESB is hearing that the Big Baddie Romulan may be portrayed by Karl Urban (Lord of the Rings, Pathfinder). Industry sources are telling us an offer has been put out to the Auckland actor by the studio and they are waiting for an acceptance (or denial if he’s a bit loony). The only project he has [...]

According to the folks over at IESB, J.J. Abrams has found his young James T. Kirk, and it’s some chap name Mike Vogel. Who the hell is Mike Vogel? I don’t know, and that seems to be the point. Abrams has been casting mostly unknowns for the younger versions of the Trek cast, and picking a guy whose biggest role to date was as spam in the recent “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” remake would fit right in. And of course, this is coming from IESB, and those guys haven’t been wrong on ANYTHING yet, as far as I know. Plus, Vogel has already done an Abrams project: he can be seen in Abrams’ “Cloverfield/1-18-08″ monster movie.

Earlier this month Zoe Saldana’s name was rumored to be in the running to play Uhura in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek 11 movie (read here), and now Variety has confirmed the casting. Zoe, who will also be seen in James Cameron’s science fiction epic “Avatar”, has officially signed on the dotted line to play the Enterprise’s communications officer. Or to be more specific, the younger version of Uhura. She’ll be joining Zachary Quinto as young Spock, James McAvoy as young Scotty, and Anton Yelchin as young Chekov.
In the original “Star Trek” TV series, Uhura – which means freedom in Swahili — was a member of the bridge crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise who rose to the rank of commander. Nichelle Nichols played the Starfleet Academy alum in the series.
Abrams is producing “Star Trek,” which revolves around the crew’s early days at Starfleet Academy, through his Paramount-based Bad Robot shingle.
Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci wrote the screenplay and will exec [...]

Has J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek 11 movie landed its Uhura? And is it Zoe Saldana? Well, why not? Saldana has already landed a big sci-fi role in James Cameron’s upcoming “Avatar”, and with her name “out there”, landing Star Trek 11 is not such a surprise anymore. Or at least, she’s rumored to have been offered the role as young Uhura, originally played by Nichelle Nichols. Basically, the role would involve Zoe sitting at a console and occasionally touching her right (or left) ear. What? Tell me I’m wrong. Anyhoo.
TrekMovie movie reported this:
Sources close to the production tell TrekMovie.com that 29-year-old actress Zoë Saldana has been offered the part of Uhura – the USS Enterprise’s communications officer originally played by Nichelle Nichols. Apparently the deal is not yet final and one outstanding issue may be related to her schedule starring in the James Cameron sci-fi mega movie Avatar which is still in production. Sources indicate that Avatar will be doing [...]

As always when it comes to everything Trek, take this with a, “Maybe, maybe not”, as in, “If it’s all wrong, don’t come blaming me”. But the dudes over at Aint-it-cool-News.com may or may not know what J.J. Abrams has planned for Star Trek 11 and the two Spocks — old Spock played by Leonard Nimoy and young Spock played by “Heroes” star Zachary Quinto. I could try to decipher what AICN said, but since SyFy Portal has done it, and done a bang up job of it, I’ll just quote them on it:
The next Star Trek film apparently will deal with an alternate timeline. And no, not Spock with a goatee, but something that “Star Trek: Enterprise” as a series tried to do but failed.
“Picture an incident that throws a group of Romulans back in time,” Moriarty said. “Picture that group of Romulans figuring out where they are in the timeline, then deciding to take advantage of the [...]

Star Trek 11: James McAvoy will play Scotty in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek movie? Maybe. Rumor is that the 28-year-old star of “The Last King of Scotland” has landed the role of the Scottish engineer on the Star Trek Enterprise, and will be joining young actors Zachary Quinto as young Spock and Anton Yelchin as young Chekov. Still no word on who will be playing young Kirk, but one suspects William Shatner is out of the question. Unless, of course, he goes back in time like Star Trek is wont to do.

Valkyrie: The ghost of Adolph Hitler strikes again! Well not really.
J.J. Abrams is one busy fella. Besides going around thinking up viral marketing ideas for his upcoming “Cloverfield”, he’s busy prepping Star Trek 11, which means casting, casting, and more casting. The latest Abrams find is Russian-born Anton Yelchin, who has landed the role of young Pavel Chekov, the Russian-born navigator of the USS Enterprise under the command of James T. Kirk. Yelchin will join “Heroes” star Zachary Quinto, who is already set to play young Spock.
Meanwhile, Abrams is also producing a new and as yet untitled supernatural thriller that will be written and directed by Josh Marston, who burst onto the scene with his indie movie “Maria Full of Grace”.
More:
Details on the pitch were being kept under wraps, as is Abrams’ usual m.o. Still, only a year into a five-year pact with Paramount, Bad Robot has quietly set up at least seven projects, covering the comedy, romantic comedy, horror and supernatural genres. It’s expected that Bad Robot will generate [...]
