I don’t know who should be more embarrassed right now: Russell Crowe, whose critically well-received political thriller “State of Play” was beat out by Zac Efron’s been-there, done-that comedy “17 Again” in the two film’s opening weekends, or Jason Statham, whose “Crank 2: High Voltage” opened in 6th place, surely a sign that although the first one was kinda cool, there wasn’t a whole lot of clamoring for a sequel that defied all logic. Well, defied more logic, anyway.
Thanks to the power of tweeners, Efron’s comedy “17 Again” opened in first place with $24 million, beating out Crowe’s “State of Play”, which did manage to just barely beat out “Monsters vs. Aliens” with $14, good enough for second place, if just barely. “Monsters vs. Aliens”, in its fourth week, just barely missed out on the second spot with another $12.9 million to add to its coffer of $163 million.
Meanwhile, Jason Statham’s “Crank 2″ opened in sixth place with [...]

Another “Big”-type movie, a dead guy comes back to life without a whole lot of explanation, and Russell Crowe investigates Ben Affleck, because let’s face it, we all know Matt Damon did most of the writing on “Good Will Hunting”, and Affleck doesn’t deserve that Oscar. But I digress. Also opening this week: the based on a true story “American Violet”, the Broadway doc “Every Little Step”, Michael Caine in “Is Anybody There?”, something called “Lymelife”, and the most intriguing movie of the limited releases, the Mexican sci-fi flick “Sleep Dealer”. Just ignore the horrendous voiceover narration for the English trailer below. (Seriously, whoever wrote that copy needs to never work again. Ever.)

The latest trailer for Kevin Macdonald’s “State of Play” has a killer running around trying to shoot Russell Crowe, but I’m gonna guess that’s a tad misleading. The film looks more like a talky mystery, and will either turn out to be the most riveting political thriller of our time or a very boring exercise in Washington corruption, which at this point is like telling people the moon only comes out at night. No shite, Sherlock. In any case, here is the latest batch of new images from the movie, starring Ben Affleck and Russell Crowe.
Based on the BBC mini-series of the same title, the American remake concerns a team of investigative reporters (led by Russell Crowe) who work alongside a police detective
to try to solve the murder of a congressman’s (Ben Affleck) mistress.
Co-starring Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman, Robin Wright Penn, Helen Mirren, Viola Davis, Maria Thayer, and Jeff Daniels. Kevin Macdonald (”The Last King of Scotland”) directs.

A lot of new images from upcoming movies have been added to our existing galleries. Earlier this week, there were new additions to “The Taking of Pelham 123″ remake, more of Tom Hanks looking quizzical in “Angels and Demons”, and even more of Russell Crowe behind a desk in the political thriller “State of Play”. There are also newer images for “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, as well as a gaggle of new images for Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen”. Plus, two more images from Robert Downey Jr.’s “Sherlock Holmes” manage to make top hats cool again. Well, kind of.

Watch out, Russell Crowe, a crazy gunman is coming after you! Look, it’s a car, jump on it! Now that’s what I call a risky getaway! Ahem. On the heels of those first images from Kevin Macdonald’s “State of Play” comes the first trailer for the movie. You know, I never thought a movie could make Ben Affleck look like a Mister Smith type caught in a situation beyond his comprehension, but he sure looks it here. P.S. You’ll notice that the synopsis below neglects to mention what party Affleck’s politically sensitive character belongs to. Clever, boys, real clever.
The full synopsis for “State of Play”:
Oscar winner Russell Crowe leads an all-star cast in a blistering thriller about a rising congressman and an investigative journalist embroiled in an case of seemingly unrelated, brutal murders. Crowe plays D.C. reporter Cal McCaffrey, whose street smarts lead him to untangle a mystery of murder and collusion among some of the nation’s most promising political [...]

The first images from “State of Play” makes us all ask the question that has been on our minds for a while now: “Is Russell Crowe really that much shorter than Ben Affleck? Dear God, he looks like a midget!” But maybe that’s just me. Here are the first images from Kevin Macdonald’s “State of Play”, a Hollywood remake of the BBC mini-series of the same name, starring Crowe as a journalist chasing the murderer of a Washington mistress. Gee, a mistress in Washington, found dead, and now people are covering it up. What are the chances? The film has quite the pedigree, not to mention some major background shenanigans, what with Brad Pitt and Ed Norton originally scheduled to star, but then bailed and were replaced by Crowe and Ben Affleck, respectively.
Based on the BBC mini-series of the same title, a team of investigative reporters work alongside a police detective to try to solve the murder of a congressman’s [...]

How giddy was director Kevin Macdonald when he found out he was going to be directing two of Hollywood’s most talented leading men, only to have them both walk off the film? That’s right, following in the footsteps of Brad Pitt, Edward Norton has exited Macdonald’s political thriller “State of Play”. So if Norton is out, who is in? Um, how about Ben Affleck.
More:
Now it will be Affleck who plays a fast-rising politician caught up in a murder conspiracy. Crowe will play a journalist who leads a newspaper’s investigation into the killing. He’s conflicted in that he once ran the pol’s campaigns and is now romancing the solon’s estranged wife.
Still in the cast are Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright Penn and Jason Bateman. Andrew Hauptman and Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are producing. While Mirren had a stop date so she could star with Joe Pesci in the Taylor Hackford-directed “Love Ranch,” attempts are being made [...]

Well it’s official. After a week of wooing and selling, the producers of the political thriller “State of Play” have finally gotten their man: Russell Crowe has officially signed on to join the film, replacing Brad Pitt, says Variety. He will be joining an A-list cast that includes Edward Norton, Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman and Robin Wright Penn. The film, a remake of a British mini-series of the same name, will be directed by Kevin Macdonald (”Last King of Scotland”). Word is Kevin Macdonald himself was in Australia over the last few days pitching the film to Crowe.
More:
Crowe will play a politico-turned-journalist who spearheads his newspaper’s investigation into a killing that leads to a fast-rising pol (Norton). The journalist faces two conflicts: he once ran campaigns for the pol and was his confidante; the journalist develops a romance with the pol’s estranged wife (Wright Penn).

Edward Norton just lost his co-star, as his “Fight Club” compadre Brad Pitt has pulled out of the political thriller “State of Play”, citing “script concerns” as the main reason. The sticking point seems to be that Pitt is not happy with the script, despite having sat down for talks with director Kevin Macdonald (”The Last King of Scotland”), and he wants work done on it. Of course there is a writer’s strike going, and that ain’t gonna happen. As a result, Pitt has walked away from the project, leaving the studios in a bit of a bind and forced to look for a replacement. Their wish list includes Johnny Depp and Russell Crowe.
More:
Pitt was set to star with Edward Norton, Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman and Robin Wright Penn in the Matthew Michael Carnahan-scripted adaptation of the British miniseries. He was playing a political consultant-turned-journalist who heads a newspaper’s murder investigation involving a fast-rising politician (Norton).

State of Play: Ed Norton and Brad Pitt has re-team, but unfortunately it’s not for “Fight Club 2″ as we’ve all been waiting (or was that just me?), and instead it’s for the political thriller “State of Play”.
Norton will play a congressman whose speedy political rise is threatened by an investigation into the death of his mistress. Pitt plays a politico-turned-journalist whose relationship with the solon is compromised when he oversees his newspaper’s investigation into the murder and develops a relationship with the pol’s estranged wife.
You know, standard Washington stuff.
