There are special effects that no Hollywood blockbuster can create, and magic that no money can buy. It is the magic of humanity that no CGI can recreate or substitute – the magic of perfectly cast actors whose alchemy transcends (and renders laughable) the puerile “special effects” of the generic horror products. LET THE RIGHT ONE IN lets the right kind of magic into its horror story and transcends the genre. It is immaterial whether you like horror or not: it is simply a great film.
Kåre Hedebrant plays Oscar, a blond bullied boy who dreams of revenge: the first words we hear from him are: “Squeal now. Squeal like a pig.” Later he will re-enact the “Are you talking to me” routine from THE TAXI DRIVER. But he’s not a psycho: he’s just trying to survive and remain sane in the cold, unfriendly environment.
Lina Leandersson, as raven-haired Eli, comes to the rescue. She warns him right from the start that [...]

Every country has their lovable, bumbling idiot. America has Jerry Lewis (though France would rather claim him), Mexico has Cantinflas, England has Peter Sellers as the unforgettable Inspector Clouseau and so on. The latest to join this august chorus of ineptitude appears to be Swede Anders Jansson who wrote and stars in Morgan Pålsson – Världsreporter, a slapstick comedy suitable for the whole family directed by Fredrik Boklund. Anders reprises his role from the 2002 hit “Vaktmästaren och professorn” (Caretaker and professor) along with Johan Wester as Morgan’s wiley cameraman, Robert Flycht.
Morgan Pålsson is a self absorbed Swedish television journalist (yes, it’s redundant) with a knack for getting himself kicked from the frying pan, directly into the fire. The movie opens with Morgan and Robert setting up in Klaipeda, Lithuania on a dock awaiting the arrival of several dignitaries including the Prime Minister of Sweden. Pålsson quickly points out to Flycht that while he’s a [...]

“The Phantom Carriage” from Swedish director Victor Sjostrom was originally released way back in 1920 and has long been revered as a classic example of early supernatural cinema. Said to have been an early inspiration for Ingmar Bergman, the film is a haunting tale based around a legend that the last person to die on New Year’s Eve is fated to become the spectral driver of the titular cart, travelling the land for a year and collecting the souls of the newly departed. The film is here reissued by Tartan on DVD, with a specially recorded new soundtrack from KLT (otherwise known as Stephen O’Malley and Peter Rehberg).
The fact is, an undisputed and influential genre landmark though it may be, “The Phantom Carriage” as a film on its own is unlikely to be of interest to the average horror fan simply due to its having been made nearly 90 years ago and being silent, in black and white and [...]

Like Lars Von Trier, Swedish director Lukas Moodysson has a reputation for producing challenging, distinctly left field art house films which attempt to address social issues through a variety of original and often quite obtuse techniques. As such, his films (which include the massive commercial hit “Together” and the grueling “Lilya 4 Ever”) are often controversial affairs, and “A Hole in my Heart”, Moodysson’s latest offering, is no different, being a claustrophobic and at times grotesque exploration of the dregs of the home porn industry. The film, which comes complete with graphic sex and surgery, has sharply divided critics, causing a great many of Moodysson’s admirers to all but disown the once darling of the world cinema scene. At the same time, others have hailed it a masterpiece, a post-modern exploration of the pursuit of satisfaction and identity in an amoral and uncaring world.
The film takes place mainly in a grubby apartment, where Rikcard (Thorsten Flinck) and his friend Geko [...]

The Swedish film industry isn’t exactly known for their action movies, but after credible shoot-em-ups such as “Ranarna” (”The Robbers”) and “Executive Protection”, there seems to be an interest in widening the scope of what can be called “Swedish films”. “Hotet” (”The Threat” in English) follows along the lines of “Ranarna” rather than “Protection”, in that it looks to have a reasonably high budget (as least by Swedish film industry standards), and the storyline would seem more comfortable in a Jerry Bruckheimer Hollywood actioner starring Nicholas Cage or one of those pretty boy actors currently in his stable. Alas, while the storyline seems to contain some kernel of ambition, the narrative as envisioned by the writers of “Hotet” and director Kjell Sundvall is less than thrilling.
“Hotet” concerns hapless military computer guy Lasse (Shanti Roney), a happily married family man with one 8-year old tyke and a hot wife (Maria Bonnevie) who is pregnant with their second child. Lasse works [...]

It’s a mystery why the Swedes don’t make more action films like “Ranarna” or “Executive Protection”, when they seem to do it just as well as everyone else. Maybe it’s because the locals don’t appreciate the combination of realism and Hollywood-esque shoot’em ups, but this reviewer certainly thinks the Swedes make fine action cinema. Although the film in question is probably too inspired by Hollywood fare such as Michael Mann’s “Heat”, it’s still a nicely executed, acted, and entertaining crime film from beginning to end.
“Ranarna” stars Sofia Helin as Klara, an introverted police researcher with a knack for figuring out the intricacies of crimes. After a group of heavily armed robbers knock over some banks with military-like efficiency, Klara comes to the conclusion that the robbers are ex-SWAT cops. Meanwhile, home life isn’t going very well for Klara, who lives with her doctor boyfriend Frank (Mikael Persbrandt) and is still trying to get over the loss of her daughter [...]

If the premise of the Swedish comedy “Kopps” sounds familiar, it might be because it’s similar to the recent American comedy “Super Troopers”. The latter movie was about a group of tight-knit State Troopers facing lay-off because there’s just not enough crime to justify their continued employment. This forces the troopers to manufacture crimes for the sake of skewing the statistics. In “Kopps”, four small town cops in an idyllic Swedish countryside town face layoff for similar reasons. In this case, the crime isn’t minimal, it’s nonexistent.
The bearer of bad news is visually pleasing blonde Jessica (Eva Rose), who informs the happy go-lucky cops of the impending closure of their police station. Hoping to stave off unemployment or — gasp! — possible reassignment, the cops to go on a spree of petty crimes. First it’s just Jakob and his partner, but soon it’s all the cops.
Fares Fares, the older brother of co-writer/director Josef Fares, stars as Jakob, a single [...]

“Executive Protection” has the distinction of being the first film from Sweden to be reviewed on Nixflix.com. It’s an action film, although the action is kept to a minimum despite what the boxcover and the pictures would have you believe. It’s a drama, although the drama is so restrained you wonder what any of it means, and it will probably take a while after watching the film to finally “get” everything the film was going for.
The star of “Executive Protection” (aka “Livvakterna”) is Jacob Eklund, who plays Johan Falk, an emotionally unavailable cop who, as the film opens, has been busted down so low in the ranks that he’s filing papers on stolen bicycles. Because of a tragedy in his past, Johan has resolved to become as emotionally detached from anyone and everything in his life. This makes him a dedicated cop, but a terrible friend. When Sven Persson (Samuel Froler), a childhood acquaintance of Johan, comes into the [...]
