If you’re a fan of writer-director Richard Kelly, or even just mildly interested in his career, the trailers for “The Box” might convince you it’s the kind of movie everyone was waiting for him to make. After two confusing and overindulgent films (cult favorite “Donnie Darko”, and the not-so-cult favorite “Southland Tales”), “The Box” promised to be a smart, simple, taut thriller that wouldn’t take an advanced degree to fully comprehend.
Unfortunately, it’s really just another trademark Richard Kelly film, drowning in oblique excess. Kelly has turned a simple premise into a wild conspiracy yarn involving the Viking Mars mission, sinister public libraries, the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre, mysterious nose bleeds, amputated toes, and towering blocks of CGI Jell-O that allow you to briefly pass through the afterlife. It’s almost as hilariously muddled as “Southland Tales”, with the key difference being that “Southland Tales” was trying to be funny.
In “The Box”, James Marsden and Cameron Diaz are a hardworking couple [...]

Who says you can’t have Christmas in November? Not Jim Carrey and director Robert Zemeckis. The duo’s CG take on the timeless “A Christmas Carol” took the top spot at the box office in its debut, knocking last week’s champ, Michael Jackson’s “This is it” of its perch to second place. “Carol” took in $31 million in its debut, good enough for first place, but not quite as spectacular as expected, given the film’s whopping $200 million budget. “This is It”, which is composed entirely of rehearsal footage starring the late Michael Jackson as he prepared for his would-be comeback concert tour, managed to hold onto second place with another $14 million, giving it a two-week domestic total of $57.8 million. The film continues to perform well overseas, already collecting $186.5 million in worldwide tickets.
Besides “A Christmas Carol”, there were four other new films at a crowded box office, with the George Clooney military satire “The Men Who Stare at [...]

Bloody-Disgusting’s got your look at five groovy clips from Richard Kelly’s “The Box”. The film doesn’t look like it has the makings of a blockbuster, given that it’s not a slam-bang actioner, or indeed a scarefest. It’s somewhere in the middle, like one of those slow-boil thrillers. And given the plot, which has Cameron Diaz and her hubby James Marsden getting a box that will net them a million bucks if they press a button on it and kill some stranger in the world, how could you not be slightly intrigued? So the question is, would you press the button? Well, would you?
Starring Cameron Diaz, James Marsden, Frank Langella, James Rebhorn, Holmes Osborne, Sam Oz Stone, Gillian Jacobs, Celia Weston, Deborah Rush, and directed by Ricahrd Kelly.
Get a piece of the box November 6, 2009.

The marketing machine for Richard Kelly’s upcoming horror/sci-fi thriller “The Box” is in full swing, unleashing a cavalcade of tantalizing pics for your immediate consumption. As a fan of both “Donnie Darko” and “Southland Tales” — yes, I liked “Southland Tales” — I’m quite interested to see what the director has up his sleeve this time around. In case you were wondering, “The Box” is based on a short story “Button, Button” by Richard Matheson and stars Cameron Diaz, James Marsden, and Frank Langella.
The synopsis is as follows:
Norma and Arthur Lewis, a suburban couple with a young child, receive a simple wooden box as a gift, which bears fatal and irrevocable consequences. A mysterious stranger, delivers the message that the box promises to bestow upon its owner $1 million with the press of a button. But, pressing this button will simultaneously cause the death of another human being somewhere in the world; someone they don’t know. With just 24 [...]

Today’s batch of new images include yet another new groovy looking poster for the latest entry in the never-say-die of horror franchises, “Saw VI”, opening this October as usual; the remake of “Fame” gets a healthy new batch of images (about 30 or so), just in time for the film’s September 25, 2009 release date; and some more looks at Cameron Diaz and Richard Kelly’s thriller “The Box”, which is due out November 6, 2009. As before, the pics don’t really reveal a whole lot, but I suppose that’s the point.

The folks over at MTV.com recently put up a new gallery of pics from some upcoming 2009 Fall movies. Among them were a lot of junk we could care less about, but there were a couple of goodies, including a new pic from “Ninja Assassin”, showing off its ninja, and er, assassin; a gun shows up in “The Box”; a pedestrian pic from “Sherlock Holmes” that is pretty, well, not exciting; and two more looks at “Jennifer’s Body”, including one of Jennifer’s body, which is only fair given the title. Click on the respective images to visit their image galleries.

Two new images for the weekend, one is the official first still of Jake Gyllenhaal as the “Prince of Persia” (I have to admit, I didn’t think he was right for the role, but the more I see of him in the costume, the more I think it was inspired casting) from EW (destined to be swap with a better, high-res version in the near future), and the final poster for Richard Kelly’s “The Box”, staring Cameron Diaz and a pimped out box that can grant wishes, if only you’ll press it. Press the box already! Press it now! Ahem. Cameron Diaz is apparently such a draw for the movie that her name comes even before the title. Plus, her head dwarfs her two male co-stars, thus reaffirming the superiority of The Diaz Clout. And from ComicBookMovies comes a couple of scans from that Entertainment Weekly issue featuring the cast of “Iron Man 2″ on the cover.

Five new images from Richard Kelly’s “The Box”. Despite the fact that I know the original story that “The Box” is based on (Richard Matheson’s “Button, Button”), I get this feeling that ol Richard Kelly is going to be pulling a fast one on the viewer. After all, the movie is being listed as a horror, thriller, and a science-fiction movie. So it’ll be interesting to see what Kelly springs on us as he diverts from the original story, as she surely must to make it his own.

The first trailer for “Donnie Darko” director Richard Kelly’s “The Box” has arrived online. The film asks the question: “If you could push a button and make $1 million dollars, but someone, somewhere in the world that you don’t know will die the instant you push the button, would you do it?” Well, would you? The film is based on a short story called “Button, Button” by Richard Matheson (of “I am Legend” fame), and co-stars a creepy, scarred Frank Langella as the deliverer of said box. The trailer makes it look much more complicated than Matheson’s original story, which was pretty simple and had one of those ironic twist endings.
Norma and Arthur Lewis, a suburban couple with a young child, receive a simple wooden box as a gift, which bears fatal and irrevocable consequences.
I’m told Richard Kelly is some kind of genius, and fanboys everywhere love his movie “Donnie Darko” so much they will keep buying the new versions of the movie that keep getting released every year. (I think this is what they mean by “There’s a sucker born every minute.” But I digress.) Kelly’s latest is “The Box”, which stars Cameron Diaz (as this poster, and her giant name and noggin’ plastered over everything clearly denotes) and a mysterious box that grants $1 million bucks to anyone who presses a button on it.
The catch: someone, somewhere, will instantly die the second the button is pressed. It’s the kind of moral dilemma that will have people talking. You know, just like Kelly’s “Southland”. What, you saw “Southland”, didn’t you? For shame! I’m told it was sheer genius, too. That, or sheer crap. Either/or. Poster for “The Box” after the jumparoo.
