Give them all the credit in the world: the legion of Twilighters that blanketed mall theaters across the country did their best, but when the dust cleared, the power of squealing teenage girls couldn’t quite trump the commitment of America’s fanboys. While Summit’s “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” took a healthy bite out of the box office, culminating in a $140 million chunk over the weekend according to studio estimates, it wasn’t nearly enough to overthrow the reigning champ, Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight”, which opened with $158.4 million a year ago.
In all-time 3-day openings, “The Dark Knight” remains king, while Sam Raimi’s “Spider-man 3″ remains second with $151 million, with “New Moon’s” $140 good enough for third place. Though it didn’t top previous movies in the States, “New Moon” was dominant overseas, putting its worldwide total for its first week of release at $258.8 million. “New Moon” also easily bested “Twilight”, the first movie in the franchise, which [...]

Talk about hype! “The Dark Knight” was probably the most hyped movie coming into theaters, and now that it’s gone and is about to hit DVD, the hype is starting all over again. Except this time Batman isn’t trying to garner support to take down the Joker, it’s to win himself some hardware — as in, Oscars. Warner Bros. apparently also thinks they have a good chance, because they’ll be re-releasing the movie into theaters early next year, just to get some extra buzz for their little movie. Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” has already earned $996.1 million worldwide. With the planned re-release in January, the hope is to break the $1 billion mark. Why bother? Bragging rights, would be my guess. Plus, that Oscar thing.
And then there’s this fan art by “joshmc” over here. It looks quite good, and I like the usage of the Joker’s trademark line from the movie.

Okay, so this “news” has been making the rounds since early this week, and pretty much anyone with a blog has written about it and cracked all the jokes they can muster, so why am I bothering? Well, I’m kind of like a sheep, and if everyone’s doing it, I feel the need to do it, too. Just kidding. Why post on an old news story about some Turkish town called Batman suing the character Batman? Um, which part of that last sentence didn’t you understand? There is actually a Turkish town called Batman that is suing Batman for unlawfully using their town’s name! I mean, come on, that alone is worth the price of admission! Am I right?
Now I know what you’re thinking: the mayor of this particular Turkish town (that means it’s in, you know, Turkey) has to be kidding, right? He’s just trying to get a little publicity, since his mayoral election is probably coming up. (Well, [...]

“The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” was good, but it wasn’t good enough to knock Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” off its #1 perch. Already in its third week and still gobbling up box office cash like it’s going out of style (it’s already at $394.9 million in just 3 weeks at the U.S. box office alone), “The Dark Knight” just barely edged out the third installment of the “Mummy” franchise to maintain its hold on the first place spot at the domestic box office over the weekend, according to studio estimates. While “Mummy 3″ took in an altogether-not-bad $42.5 million in its opening week, Batman and company still managed to best it with $43.8 million. The weekend’s only other opening film, the Kevin Costner political-satire/comedy “Swing Vote” opened with $6.3 million.
Other notables has the Will Ferrell comedy “Step Brothers” continuing a good second week at the box office with a $16.3 million take, good enough for third place. [...]

There are good news and bad news for Warner Bros. regarding their movie, the Christopher Nolan film “The Dark Knight”. The bad news is that the film dropped over 52% in its second week of release; the good news is that, after making north of $150 million in its first week, a 52% drop still means “The Dark Knight” raked in a not-too-shabby $75.6 million in its second week of release, for a total of $314 million in two weeks. Batman easily maintained the top spot at the box office over the weekend, with only two new films opening against it: the comedy “Step Brothers”, and the return of “The X-Files”, which landed at #4 with $10 million. “Step Brothers”, meanwhile, took the second spot and tripled the ticket sales of “The X-Files” with $30 million in its debut.
The $10 million by “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” is disappointing, considering that the attendees were probably diehard fans of the [...]

Okay, so $155.3 million is about $45 million less than my grand prediction of $200 million or more, but it’s still a lot. It easily makes “The Dark Knight” the biggest opener in 2008, easily beating out “Iron Man’s” $100 million and change debut. The weekend tally was also good enough to surpass the $151.1 million record over 3-days held by “Spider-Man 3″ from last year, although final numbers released on Monday will let us know just how much Batman beat up Spider-Man in the numbers game. The $151.1 million is, of course, just studio estimates, and as we all know, studios tend to be optimistic about their film’s opening numbers. I believe they call it “spin” in political circles.
But Warner Bros. isn’t telling you the whole story. Beyond the hype, there’s this cold water fact from the AP, who breaks down the “Dark Knight” vs. “Spider-Man 3″ comparison:
Factoring in higher admission prices, however, “Spider-Man 3″ may have sold slightly [...]

Since 1989, there have been six Batman films: Two starring Michael Keaton, one with Val Kilmer, one with George Clooney, and now two with Christian Bale. In these films, Batman has fought a line-up of villains that includes, we’ll go order: the Joker (Jack Nicholson), the Penguin (Danny DeVito), Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), Harvey Dent/Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones), the Riddler (Jim Carrey), Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger), Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman), and Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy). In his latest venture, “The Dark Knight,” Batman comes full circle again tackling the Joker (Heath Ledger). (Scarecrow makes a 10-second early cameo, and Harvey Dent/Two-Face (Aaron Eckhart) is again featured, but more on that later.)
Why is the Joker back in action? Because of all of Batman’s arch rivals, Joker is the most intriguing but also the most repellent. Not that you would have known that by watching the 1960s TV series, Cesar Romero played the role, or even by viewing Tim Burton’s 1989 film, in [...]

Either that, or you’ve all been dying to see it, and you spent all day Friday doing just that. The big news from Lalaland is that “The Dark Knight” broke all kinds of records by banking a seriously impressive $66.4 million in a single day, Friday. That number, from Warner Bros. themselves (it could change, give or take a million either way), easily bested the one-day total for “Spider-Man 3″, which pulled in $59.8 when it premiered, and before people realized that Sam Raimi didn’t care about making quality superhero movies anymore.
Reuters breaks down the nunmbers:
The film will likely break the opening weekend record of $151.1 million set by the Spider-Man movie, said Dan Fellman, head of distribution at Warner Bros.
“I don’t see any reason why we are going to slow down,” he said.
Fellman attributed the success to the unique vision of director Christopher Nolan and the “outstanding” performance of the late Australian actor Heath Ledger in what [...]

It’s almost here. July 18th, 2008. The Dark Knight Detective — that’s Batman to you non-comic book people — returns in what is being called the best comic book movie EVER. Of all time. This thing is so good, some say, it will make you go home and smack your momma on her ass and throw your daddy through the window. Yup, it’s supposedly that good. And hey, since we haven’t seen the movie yet (there’s no way in hell I’m not seeing this thing with a PAYING crowd), we’re going to take everyone’s word for it, and introduce you to a gaggle of “Dark Knight” images you might not have seen before.
Batman raises the stakes in his war on crime. With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to dismantle the remaining criminal organizations that plague the city streets. The partnership proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to [...]

After a month or so of foaming at the mouth by fanboy movie sites and actual critics alike to praise “The Dark Knight”, a movie critic has decided to take the film to task for being kind of average, while a fanboy movie site is taking issue with all the hyper praise for Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight”. David Edelstein of NYMag is the critic, and John over at TheMovieBlog is the fanboy. John calls bullshit on descriptions of the movie as a “masterpiece”, “ultra violence”, and my personal favorite, “the best goddamn crime movie since the invention of cinema.” Okay, so maybe I made that last one up, but you get the idea.
NYMag critic Edelstein has already gotten grief from certain fanboy movie sites for his less-than-”it’s a masterpiece!” praising of “The Dark Knight”. Here are some of the highlights from his review:

Well, okay, maybe not Jesus, but quite possibly the second coming of the dinosaurs. It’s good, let’s just put it this way. No, not good, but really, really good. Or at least, that seems to the be consensus from all the people who have seen and reviewed the movie. It’s so good, in fact, that Warner Bros. has been releasing videos out the wazoo for the film, not even concern that they’ll ruin anything about the movie for the fans. To that end, they’ve put out the first six minutes of the movie (you’ve seen it before in bootleg form, but this is the high-res version), as well as an 8-minute behind-the-scenes look at Nolan and company in action.

Thank God someone over there has some sense, even if I don’t always like how he goes about writing them into the movies. The guy in question is David Goyer, who recently spoke to Digital Spy and made it very clear that he and the Batman Begins gang has no plans to introduce either Catwoman or The Penguin into “Batman Begins 3″, or whatever it ends up being called. Damn straight, Goyer. Why keep re-introducing the same bloody characters, when Batman’s Rogues Gallery is as massive as it is? They got it right by using Ra’s Al Ghul in the first one, and I suppose it was inevitable that the Joker eventually showed up in the second one.
Here’s what Goyer said:
“Batman has been published for 70 years. In the first movie, we used Ra’s Al Ghul and the Scarecrow, who had not been in the movies before, and had not been in the ’60s TV show before.

From all the advance reviews we’ve read on Christopher Nolan’s second outing as helmer of the Dark Knight, “The Dark Knight” will either be the greatest comic book movie ever made, or one of the most hyped. Knowing the Internets, it could be either/or. In today’s roundtable of “Dark Knight”-related news, we’ll start with the movies that will be showing up in front of it, namely the trailers. It’s been confirmed by Comingsoon, after weeks of rumor, that “Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins” and “Watchmen” will indeed premiere their trailers in front of Nolan’s movie, thus guaranteeing them, possibly, the biggest trailer debuts since, well, ever, maybe. And oh yeah, you can add Ridley Scott’s terrorism flick “Body of Lies” (with Leonardo Dicaprio and Russell Crowe) into the mix of trailers making their debut in front of the Knight, too.

In case you haven’t heard, Warner Bros. is about to release a little movie of theirs called “The Dark Knight”. I hear it’s their prestige film of the year, and that they’re expecting to lose money on it, although it would just tickle them pink if it ended up making a profit. That’s a bit much to hope for, I have to admit, as almost no one has heard of the movie at all. Anyhoo, here’s a look at it. It stars some guys name Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, and Gary Oldman, and is directed by an up and comer name Christopher Nolan. I hear it’s a decent little movie.
Give the film a shot July 18 when it opens. Remember, these small movies need your help if they are to exist in a world of blockbusters and what-have-you!
Wizard World Con trailer:

First six minutes from the movie:

That wacky Joker. If Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan aren’t careful, the Joker may end up being the star of “The Dark Knight”, which would be a problem if the Joker ended up dead at the end of the movie. Of course, that’s how we’d prefer the film end, instead of leaving the Joker alive for a sequel. And from everything I’ve seen of the trailer, it sure looks like the Joker is the best thing about the “Batman Begins” sequel. Here’s another poster for “The Dark Knight” featuring the Batman as seen through the eyes of the Joker. It ain’t pretty, kids. The Joker is one twisted SOB, it would appear.
Batman and James Gordon join forces with Gotham’s new District Attorney, Harvey Dent, to take on a psychotic bank robber known as The Joker, whilst other forces plot against them, and Joker’s crimes grow more and more deadly.
Knight falls July 18.

Looks like the viral site for “The Dark Knight” (whysoserious.com) has updated again, and this time it features a very short clip (exactly 33 seconds) from the movie featuring Two-Face (aka Harvey Dent, played by Aaron Eckhart) confronting an old guy in a bar. No, that’s not the beginning of a bad, tasteless joke, although give me a couple of days and it could be one. Check out the clip below and behold some Two-Face glory. Well, okay, not really. You get to see his back and hear his voice. Kinda the same, right?
Those guys at “The Dark Knight”. What a bunch of teases. Bats and the Joker gets their jollies on the mean streets of Gotham July 18th.

Here’s another viral video for the movie that you may or may not have seen before, featuring a Gotham City news channel broadcast. It’s seven minutes long, though, and if you end up watching all of it, it might just be [...]

Batman. The Dark Knight Crusader. A guy who skulks about in the dead of night beating the crap out of murderers and rapists because one of them shot his parents dead when he was a kid, has a milk mustache. Yup, I don’t know if this means the Warner Bros. PR people are going way overboard to promote their movie, or if this is somehow brilliant, but wow, seriously? A milk ad with Batman? I don’t know what to say. But see for it yourself. I guess it’s kind of, uh, cute. In a spooky, creepy, gonna give me nightmares sort of way.
Knight falls July 18, 2008.

I normally wouldn’t post this, but Wednesday is shaping up to be a very slow movie news day, so here you go anyway: Batman and the Joker (Christian Bale and Heath Ledger, respectively) on two separate covers of Empire Magazine. I have no idea where you can get Empire Magazine, but I guess your local news stand might have them. Or try Barnes and Noble if your city doesn’t have news stands anymore, I know it’s a hard to find one in mine.
Batman and James Gordon join forces with Gotham’s new District Attorney, Harvey Dent, to take on a psychotic bank robber known as The Joker, whilst other forces plot against them, and Joker’s crimes grow more and more deadly.
The throwdown goes down July 18, 2008.

Haven’t gotten enough “Dark Knight” merchandising yet? Well you’re in luck if that’s the case, because the Hot Toys Collectible Bust Series featuring the Joker (still as creepy as ever, even in bust form) and Batman (I still don’t like the clunky suit; what’s wrong with tights?) have arrived online. Take a look at them below, and tell me you’re not going to have nightmares of the Joker after you’ve seen the movie. Okay, you probably won’t have nightmares if you’re older than 10, but guys, keep the kids away from this thing!
Collider has your first look at the busts:
Both busts have Batman and The Joker in approximately 1/4th scale and stand approximate 9.5 inches tall, supported by a stand featuring The Dark Knight logo (and as a special features allows limited head movement). The busts are scheduled to arrive in June, or worst case early July.
See the rest of the pics at their site here:

When the most recent “Dark Knight” trailer was released, we pulled some screenshots from the trailer that showed the evolution of Harvey Dent (played by Aaron Eckhart) from crusading Gotham D.A. to Two-Face. Or, well, we sorta see Two-Face — at least his “good” side (see image below). Now someone has found Two-Face’s “bad” side, and let me tell you, it is one fugly mug. That is, if this turns out to be an actual photograph of Two-Face from the movie.
You can see Two-Face’s bad side here.
And no, I’m not going to post it here, at least not immediately. If this turns out to be the real deal, and Warner Bros. didn’t approve it, they’ll be stalking the net like they always do tossing around lawsuit threats as they always do. And I really like my ISP, and would prefer to save them the hassle of having to deal with Warner Bros.’ lawsuit-happy shock troops.
Instead, here’s a new image [...]
