Yam Laranas shot his original horror movie “The Echo” in 2004 and finished up an American remake of the same movie in 2008. The film stars Jesse Bradford as an ex-con who moves into a haunted apartment building and begins to hear sounds. A longer, more plot-heavy (i.e. voiceover narration) version of the trailer was posted last year (see that here). This one is a Korean version of the trailer, and is a slicker, less obvious but definitely more atmospheric cut. The bathroom stall scene creeps me the hell out, man.
An ex-con moves into an old apartment building, where he encounters a domestic problem involving a police officer, his wife, and their daughter. When he tries to intervene, however, a mysterious curse entraps him.
Starring Jamie Bloch, Jesse Bradford, Iza Calzado, Kevin Durand, Jayne Eastwood, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Carlos Leon, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Amelia Warner, and Louise Linton. Yam Laranas directs.
The film opens May 28 in South Korea, thus the trailer. [...]

Yam Laranas’s “The Echo” seems to be flying under the radar. It’s a remake of a Filipino horror movie of the same name, directed by the guy who did the original (that seems to be a trend with Hollywood nowadays; besides, you know, unnecessarily remaking Asian horror movies, I mean). Someone sent a kinda-review for the movie to us a while back, and it’s occurred to me that I have yet to post a trailer for the movie. So here it is. Don’t ever say I never did anything for you kids.

Jesse Bradford stars as the ex-con, who may or may not be losing his mind the way his mom did when she went missing. Since this is a horror movie, I’m gonna guess that no, the [...]

Guest Movie Review by Lance Curtis — Twitch.com says it is the most “art-house oriented film” to come out of Vertigo Entertainment, the producers behind horror films The Ring, The Grudge, and now The Echo.
The Echo, directed by young filmmaker Yam Laranas, certainly comes as a surprise to even those horror fans who claim to have seen everything. The film manages to be both artistic and terrifying. A rare and strangely powerful combination.
With hardly any special effects, Yam Laranas uses his mastery of lights and shadows to turn the most innocuous everyday objects into the stuff of night terrors. The hallway. The door. The window. The closet. The garbage shoot. Everything looks ominous in the world he’s created out of the simplest camera gestures and shifts in light.
The main character Bobby (played by Jesse Bradford) likewise achieves the most effect with minimalist dialogue and a total absence of typical horror theatrics.
He is an ex-con returning to the apartment of [...]

I remember reading about how the filmmakers and producers behind the Filipino horror movie “The Echo” created the film with the express purpose of getting it remade by Hollywood and cashing in on the then-current Asian horror movie craze. Well it’s been four years since the original “Echo” came out, and director Yam Laranas has finally gotten his wish — he’s not only gotten his movie remade by Hollywood, but he’s directing the remake himself. Yup. Thus ends our ability to bitch and whine about yet another unnecessary remake of a foreign movie.
So what’s it about?
An ex-con moves into an old apartment building, where he encounters a domestic problem involving a police officer, his wife, and their daughter. When he tries to intervene, however, a mysterious curse entraps him.
Starring Jesse Bradford, Amelia Warner, Iza Calzado, Louise Linton, Carlos Leon and Kevin Durand.
The boys over at Bloody-Disgusting has your first look at the teaser poster.

Now usually my “snobby Asian film fan” persona kicks in when I hear about Hollywood remaking an Asian movie, especially when the infamous Roy Lee is involved. But there is one thing that keeps me from making such snobbish statements about this remake of “The Echo”, and it’s this: the filmmakers behind “The Echo” have said many times that they always intended for their film to sell internationally, and were actively seeking to sell the remake rights to Hollywood since 2003, during the height of the J-horror Remake boom. With that in mind, Jesse Bradford has signed on to star in the remake of the Filipino horror movie “The Echo” (aka “Sigaw”).

The story centers on a young ex-con (Bradford) who moves into an old apartment building only to learn his neighbor is an abusive police officer who savagely beats his wife and daughter. When the ex-con tries to intervene, he becomes trapped in a curse.
This will be young Mr Bradford’s [...]
