According to Jackie Chan, he had talked with Jet Li about the two of them making a movie together many years ago when both were in Hong Kong, but the opportunity never presented itself. Fast-forward to 2007, when Hollywood comes calling. “The Forbidden Kingdom” is that long-awaited collaboration between two of Chinese cinema’s most famous players. And while Li and Chan are essentially playing derivatives of characters they’ve played in countless Chinese films, the fact that they are sharing the same screen somehow makes that side note a little easier to look past.
“The Forbidden Kingdom” is a Western product, first and foremost, so inevitably there must be a Caucasian face to lead us into the film’s Chinese world. Our guide is one Jason Tripitikas (Michael Angarano, “Sky High”), an American teenager obsessed with kung fu movies. After some neighborhood toughs force Jason to participate in the robbery of a local Chinese pawnshop, Jason grabs onto a fighting staff for help; [...]

It was close, but as we predicted, the combination of Jet Li and Jackie Chan’s first-ever onscreen collaboration in “The Forbidden Kingdom” was just strong enough to survive a furious challenge from the Judd Apatow-produced comedy “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” to take #1 at the box office over the weekend. The Disney martial arts movie took in $20 million in its opening weekend, besting “Marshall” by $ 3 million. The week’s only other challenger, the Al Pacino thriller “88 Minutes” landed at #4 with $6.8 million.
Probably most surprising is that the teen slasher flick “Prom Night” still made another $9 million despite falling to the #3 slot after its surprise #1 finish last week. So far, the poorly reviewed horror remake has grossed a surprising $32 million at the box office, all but guaranteeing a sequel, as teen horror movies are wont to do.
Not doing quite as well is Keanu Reeves’ “Street Kings”, which plummeted to #7 with $4 million, putting [...]

Jackie Chan by himself may not be enough to take down Sarah Marshall and her wacky Hawaiian vacation, or Al Pacino and his goatee (and something about a murder mystery involving young women way too hot for him), but Jackie Chan teaming up with Jet Li? Okay, so maybe they still might not have enough muscle and kung fu moves to take down the spunky and bikini-clad Kristen Bell, but it’s gonna be a tight one at the box office this weekend. Let’s look how they stack up, shall we?

The Forbidden Kingdom
Official Plot: An American teen is is transported back in time to ancient China, where he joins a crew of warriors to help free the king.
FYI: Can Jackie Chan score a hit without a Western funnyman as a sidekick? How about Jet Li? He’s never had a hit. How about the two of them combined?
Starring: Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Michael Angarano, Liu Yifei, Li Bingbing, Collin Chou
Directed by: Rob [...]

Nix here. I plan on reviewing “The Forbidden Kingdom” when it hits theaters later this month. What, I’m not going to see the first-ever martial arts collaboration between Jackie Chan and Jet Li? Yeah, yeah, I haven’t been a big fan of Chan, but I am a humongous fan of Li, and this seems like a movie that’s right up his alley. Reader Michael Wright beat me to it and sent in his review for the film, which is scheduled to open April 18, 2008. This review is SPOILER-FREE.
———*———-
WOW, what a fun movie and story. Seeming allot like The Wizard of OZ, the delightful story begins with a young Boston boy (Jason), a want to be martial arts fan, caught is a bad situation. After a fall and a bump on the head, he travels to a far land back in time where he becomes the center of local lure as the savior of the famed and magical Monkey King. [...]

You know how I feel about Jackie Chan (stop doing those movies if you don’t like them, you idiot!), and you know how I feel about Jet Li (great guy, love his movies, too bad most of them are just crap — thanks, Hollywood?), now put the two of them together in a movie, and how could it possibly be bad? Well, as we’ve heard from Jackie, it ain’t really that great of a movie — according to him. But from what I’ve seen, it’s got potential to be a decent actioner. Maybe not great by Jackie’s standards, but come on, when has Jackie done anything great in a while? I’m just looking for good, decent entertainment here. Three clips from the movie, including a forty-second fight between Jet Li and Jackie Chan, below.

Let’s face it, if I was a producer on “The Forbidden Kingdom”, I would dock Jackie Chan a thousand dollars every time this dope went out in public and badmouth the movie, which Chan has done regularly ever since starring in the Hollywood film alongside Jet Li. But nevermind all that. Chan apparently had so much fun working with Li, and vice versa, that the duo is planning a second film together, this one to be based on a story they had begun together almost 15 years ago.
More:
“The first day we started filming, it felt like we had worked together for many years,” Chan said, adding, “after filming this movie, we didn’t have enough fun.”
“In four months (of filming), we went from friends to becoming brothers,” Li said.
Chan said their fight sequences went so smoothly that cinematographer Peter Pau told them to slow down.
He said “The Forbidden Kingdom” is not the movie he wanted to make his first collaboration [...]

Via the geeks over at geekland, AICN, here’s another poster for the upcoming Jet Li/Jackie Chan collaboration “The Forbidden Kingdom”. The new spanking poster (thumbnail to your left, bigger version below) features the film’s main selling points — namely, Li and Chan, high-kicking, er, empty air. Well, I’m sure the air had it coming. In the film, Li plays the Silent Monk and Monkey King, while Chan is a dirty, smelly beggar. And probably drunk, too.
“The Forbidden Kingdom”, directed by Rob Minkoff of “Chicago” fame, opens April 18, 2008.

Well you’re in luck, because Yahoo! Movies has posted new images from the film, and we’ve extracted the ones we haven’t seen yet. The one thing you notice about these new images? Yeah, yeah, there’s Li and Chan, but … Li Bingbing (pictured)? Damn. That’s one hot momma. And from the looks of things, she’s a villain in the movie. Don’t you just love bad girls?

Here’s your first look (as far as I know) of Jet Li playing the Monkey King in the upcoming martial arts movie “The Forbidden Kingdom”. The Monkey King is one of two roles that Li will be playing; his other role is the Silent Monk (seen already in the white robes). But this is, I believe, the first time Li is visible, all hairy and what not (thumb to your left, bigger image below), but I could be wrong.

How ridiculous is it that it took Hollywood, of all places, to not only think of the idea of putting Jackie Chan and Jet Li in the same movie (and have them fight), but to also pull it off. Shouldn’t Hong Kong have done this, like, years ago? Oh well. From everything I’ve seen of it, “Kingdom” has the makings of a nice little entertaining flick. Sure, it won’t be another “Fearless”, but it should be decent enough to take your kids or nephews to and not be embarrassed about it. Some new images below.

It’s funny, but it just occurred to me when I saw this poster for “The Forbidden Kingdom” over at Cinematical that we’ve already gotten the trailer AND a ton of stills from the movie, but we’ve never actually gotten the poster. Which, again, is very odd from a movie marketing standpoint; posters are easy to do, and you’d think they would put one out well before everything else.
In any case, here’s your first look at the poster for “The Forbidden Kingdom”, a Hollywood-financed movie starring a white kid and Jet Li and Jackie Chan.
Directed by Rob Minkoff (The Lion King), The Forbidden Kingdom follows an American teen (Michael Angarano) and all-around Kung Fu nut, who comes across a mysterious Chinese staff that transports him back to ancient China. While there, he meets up with two Kung Fu masters (Chan, Liu Yifei) and the Silent Monk (Li), and the four head off to fulfill an ancient prophecy to free the jailed [...]

Wow, how long has it been since I heard about this monumental team-up between two of Asia’s most exciting martial arts star? Years, it seems. Hopes were high, but they were quickly dashed by those asinine posts by the always inane Jackie Chan via his blog about how the movie will probably suck, which, of course, damp a lot of spirits. But hey, Jackie has always talked out of his ass, so maybe he was doing it again. One could only hope. “The Forbidden Kingdom” has since finished up production, and is currently in post. Someone has cut the trailer, and here it is for your viewing pleasure. Quick observation: Holy crap, there is a TON of action in this thing.
A discovery made by a kung fu obsessed American teen sends him on an adventure to China, where he joins up with a band of martial arts warriors in order to free the imprisoned Monkey King.
Starring Jet Li, Jackie Chan, [...]

Maybe something got lost in the translation from Chinese to English, but man, it sure sounds like Jackie Chan and Jet Li don’t think all that highly of their upcoming Hollywood collaboration, “The Forbidden Kingdom”. I mean, damn, boys, this isn’t the best way to sell a movie, doncha know. Then again, considering Jackie Chan’s recent spate of movie choices, I’m not sure how much we should invest in his opinions of a film. Jet Li, on the other hand, I tend to believe; the guy seems like a straight shooter, while Jackie, well, sees dollars more than he does quality films from what I can tell.
WorstPreviews had these comments from the two men:
Jackie Chan says his first collaboration with Jet Li is set to disappoint fans. The “Rush Hour” star has admitted that “The Forbidden Kingdom,” which finished shooting in China last month, “isn’t actually that great.”
Speaking at a press conference in China, he remarked: “If I say it’s [...]

There are probably only two sure things about the upcoming Jet Li/Jackie Chan collaboration, “The Forbidden Kingdom”: The Chinese Government will probably find another reason to ban it, and the action is going to be kick-ass. How could it not, with action choreographer Yuen Wo-Ping literally pulling the strings? Now some images from the movie have popped up online here. In the third picture you can see the “American kid”, from who the story (a loose remake of the Chinese tale “Journey to the West”) the movie is being told from. Yes, they had to toss an American kid in there because, apparently, American kids couldn’t relate to a Chinese version. That’s Hollywood for ya.

Jet Li recently took time out from filming “The Forbidden Kingdom”, his long-awaited collaboration with Jackie Chan, to talk about the movie — or, more specifically, his Monkey King character, and problems he had (that were resolved) with the original script. Apparently Jet had been approached to do the movie over 3 years ago, but at the time the script wasn’t up to snuff. The post comes via AliveNotDead.com, which I believe is a subsidiary of Jet’s official site, JetLi.com.
Here’s what Jet had to say (original posting here):
Ideally, the identity of the person portraying the Monkey King should be kept secret. However, with advances in technology and information distribution, today’s entertainment industry doesn’t really have any secrets. By now everyone knows that I will be playing the Monkey King character in “Forbidden Kingdom”.
In fact, when I first received the scrīpt three years ago the producer approached me to play the role of the Monkey King, but at [...]

Speaking of Jet Li and Jackie Chan in “The Forbidden Kingdom”, here’s another name to add to the cast: Collin Chou has joined the crew as the Jade War Lord. The cast of Chou is actually not all that significant (I imagine he’d be the villain or background character), but I do find it kind of funny. Remember back in the heyday of “The Matrix”? It coincided with Jet Li’s emergence in Hollywood, and the Wachowski brothers actually wrote a role for Li, but Li turned it down to do another movie, and guess who got the role? Yes, that’s right, Collin Chou.
Now they’re working together on the same movie! Now this has nothing to do with anything, but I just find that kind of funny, is all.
