Hulk 2.0 took first place at the box office over the weekend with a solid $54 million in its opening week. Not bad, right? Well, not really. Despite how Marvel will try to spin this (Marvel chairman David Maisel is already out there spinning his butt off as I type this), consider this: Ang Lee’s 2003 “Hulk” took in $62.1 in its opening weekend, before bad word of mouth by fanboys sank the movie in its second week. With that little barely-history lesson in perspective, Louis Leterrier’s “The Incredible Hulk’s” #1 box office weekend showing is not altogether very impressive, by which I mean Marvel better hope the second week drop-off isn’t as bad as the Lee version. We’ll know for sure in week 2 if reviving the Green Goliath with anger management issues after just 5 years was a good idea.
Meanwhile, the chopsocky goodness of cartoon animals continue its strong showing at the box office, with “Kung Fu Panda” [...]

Hey, how cool is this, that I can now type Shymalan without having to look it up? Yes, folks, I’m mighty proud of myself. Anyhoo. We’ve already heard from fanboys and anonymous movie reviewers take pop shots at M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Happening” (his first R-rated movie, as the film’s trailers like to trumpet, as if that should make it, you know, really great or something), now what do the big boys aka the guys who actually get paid for it have to say about “The Happening”? Here are Variety and The Hollywood Reporter’s take on the film.
First up, Variety’s Justin Chang:
One might charitably describe “The Happening” as a transitional work for M. Night Shyamalan. In an attempted rebound from the critical and commercial calamity of “Lady in the Water,” the writer-director has scaled back most of his characteristic touches — the contorted horror/fantasy mythology, the “gotcha” twist ending, even his trademark cameo — instead serving up a patchy, uninspired [...]

In case you haven’t figured it out by now, M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Happening” will feature a lot of people dying. In gruesome, bloody ways, in some instances. And hey, check it out, you can see some of those gruesome deaths in this red band trailer for “The Happening”! Wow, isn’t that convenient? I especially like the one where the tractor thing swallows up the farmer in the field. I don’t know what you call those things, but I can imagine tiny bits of chunky meat flying around. Yum.
A paranoid thriller about a family on the run from a natural crisis that presents a large-scale threat to humanity.
The happening happens June 13, 2008.

Yes, says not one, but two people who have managed to see a sneak peek at M. Night Shyamalan’s stab at climbing out of the pit known as “critically and commercially savaged”, aka post-”Lady in the Water” stinkiness. Unfortunately, while the trailers seem to strike that perfect balance of, “What the hell is going on here?” and “Geez, I kinda don’t really want to know, because I might not be able to handle it!!”, the first reviews for the film are not, well, good. In fact, they’re downright terrible. Really, really terrible, apparently.
The reviews were sent into Collider.com. Here’s an excerpt:
“The Happening” is a terrible, terrible movie. I mean, it’s bad on an epic scale. It’s so bad that I can’t possibly tell you how bad it is without understating the point or making it sound like I’m picking on the film. But let me stress: this is not pent-up Shyamalan aggression or a desire to see him fail. This [...]

Wait, aliens aren’t causing the weird stuff that’s taking place in M. Night Shymalan’s latest, “The Happening”? It’s not even little grey men from the center of the Earth? I’m so disillusioned, especially since, according to an article in the L.A. Times, the environmental crisis that everyone in the movie (led by Mark Wahlberg) is trying to flee from “was caused by terrorists or the U.S. government.” In Hollywood, that’s like saying, “either/or”, since there seems to be no distinction between Uncle Sam and Al Qaeda in Lalaland these days.
More from the LA Times:
“It has a road-movie-ish feeling to it,” says Shyamalan, who stays mum about what his traditional cameo appearance will be in this film. Perhaps the biggest influence on “The Happening,” which 20th Century Fox releases June 13, was the 1956 version of the classic horror film “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” he says, “in the sense that people are trying to get out of an area that [...]

Haven’t heard a whole lot from M. Night Shyamalan’s new supernatural thriller “The Happening” ever since the film’s second trailer was released mid-February. With the film due out in theaters this Summer, June 13, 2008 (less than two months away, by my count), you’d think the studio would be gearing up the promotional machine to hawk the film right about now. So maybe the release of five new images from the movie is part one of that promotional blitz. See the images below.

Starring Zooey Deschanel, Mark Wahlberg, and John Leguizamo, and written and directed by M. Night Shyalaman.

Here’s my guess of the plot twist for M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Happening” — it turns out to be the work of God, ala The Rapture, and that all the sinners are the ones jumping off buildings and going ka-splat. Then again, it could be aliens, or mole men from the center of the Earth. Who knows what Shyamalan’s cooked up. In any case, a second trailer for “The Happening” has arrived online.
A paranoid thriller about a family on the run from a natural crisis that presents a large-scale threat to humanity.
From the trailer, it appears Mark Wahlberg doesn’t get to punch or shoot anyone. What a gyp.

Aliens, or maybe ghosts, or maybe creatures from our imagination, attack humanity in M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Happening”, a film that is sure to feature a groovy twist at the end, and if not, a whole lot of people are gonna feel really gypped. Starring Mark Wahlberg (who is such a big star now that his name on the poster nearly overshadows the title of the movie) and written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, who is desperate hoping for a hit. From the looks of the trailer — yeah, this thing is gonna be pretty good, at least in the beginning…

You know the curious thing about this first poster for M. Night Shyamalan’s new movie “The Happening”? Not the poster itself.
Via Cinematical, new plot details from M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Happening” has popped up online. Besides having some pictures from the set of the movie (here), they’ve also gotten some ACTUAL plot details from the movie, which so far has been described in very vague terms, such as this from IMDB.com: “A paranoid thriller about a family on the run from a natural crisis that presents a large-scale threat to humanity.” Well now we know a little bit more. Be warned, though, there are SPOILERS below…
From The Phillyist:
Something is making people in Philadelphia go crazy and kill themselves, and they can’t figure out what it is or why. In one scene, some people are driving through some farm land and they find out (on the radio, maybe?) that it’s an airborne virus. Being out in the sticks, they think they’re okay, until they drive by a farm and see a bunch of tree surgeons or farmers or something who’ve hanged [...]

The cast of M. Night Shyamalan’s disaster flick “The Happening” continues to grow, this time adding John Leguizamo to the cast. The film stars Mark Wahlberg as a man who takes his family on the run when a natural disaster threatens to end the world; Leguizamo would play that character’s best friend, says Variety. Shooting on “The Happening” is already underway in Shyamalan’s native Philadelphia, with Fox looking at a release date for Friday, June 13, 2008. I wonder what’s so special about June 13 that they would target that one specifically…
Not a whole lot about the movie is known except for the brief plotline mentioned above. But knowing Shyamalan, is there any doubt there will be a twist at the end? I’m guessing that either aliens are behind the “natural disaster”, or it’s my Uncle Ben in California.

Al Gore and Leonardo Dicaprio’s sure-to-be favorite movie of 2008, M. Night Shyamalan’s natural disaster thriller “The Happening” gets its leading lady in Zooey Deschanel (“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”), reports Variety. The film already landed its leading man in Mark Wahlberg a while back. In “The Happening”, a man takes his family on the run when an apocalyptical natural crisis threatens to end civilization, but it turns out it was just aliens disguised as Crab People. Wait, that’s not true. Or is it?
Shooting for “The Happening” begins August in Philadelphia, Shyamalan’s hometown and preferred place of business. Coming off the critical and box office flop “The Lady in the Water”, M. Night’s got a lot to make up.
