If you’re thinking Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” is some kind of propaganda piece that’s either pro- or anti-Iraq War invasion, you’d be wrong. I don’t think the movie takes much of a political stance either way. It’s probably the most white-knuckle, suspenseful action film I’ve seen in recent years (read my review of it here). Every minute of this movie made me nervous about what’s going to happen next, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to see a tough, no bullshit account of what it’s like to live and work in a war zone. Watch the first 8 minutes of “The Hurt Locker” below. Trust me, this is the least thrilling part; the rest of the movie amps up the suspense level to unbelievable degrees.
An intense portrayal of elite soldiers who have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world: disarming bombs in the heat of combat. When a new sergeant, James, takes over [...]

Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” is probably the most pro-military movie that has come out of Hollywood in the last few years. And truth be told, it’s not even that pro-military. It’s just that compared to the most recent dozen or so entrants, “The Hurt Locker” does not seem to share the blatant distaste for America’s men in uniform, and as a result will appear to buck the trend more than it actually does, or indeed, sets out to do. The film does not gleefully castrate the men whose occupation just happens to be the enforcers of America’s foreign policy, their journeys to war at the behest of the bogeyman of Hollywood filmmakers for the last 8 years, that oft mocked figure of hatred, George W. Bush. Unfortunately for Bigelow and “The Hurt Locker”, the country remains fatigued on the Iraq War itself, and it’ll be a while yet before any movie that tackles the subject is welcomed with box [...]

KA-BLOOEY! (Or more like, KA-BOOM!) That’s what you’ll probably be seeing and hearing a lot from Kathryn Bigelow’s Iraq War-set “The Hurt Locker”, which is being sold as an action film that just happens to be set in Iraq during the war. It’s actually the smart way to go, considering how badly the recent spate of Iraq War-set films have done at the box office. Here are some new images and a new poster for the film.
Iraq. Forced to play a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse in the chaos of war, an elite Army bomb squad unit must come together in a city where everyone is a potential enemy and every object could be a deadly bomb.
Starring Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes, David Morse, Christian Camargo, Suhail Aldabbach, and Evangeline Lilly. Kathryn Bigelow (”Point Break”) directs.
Get hurt June 26.

Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” sure hasn’t had an easy time of it getting into theaters. It’s had a very strange shelf life, including Festival showings in 2008, but in 2009 it’s finally landing in theaters on June 26. We’re probably looking at a limited release here, as the producers and studios seem to have finally “got” it that movie audiences just don’t care about an Iraq War film, even one that seems to be all about the action and less about the politics as Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker”. This new trailer is trying to sell just that: a pure action movie that just happens to be set in a controversial war.
The Hurt Locker, winner of the 2008 Venice Film Festival SIGNIS Grand Prize, is a riveting and suspenseful portrait of the elite members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad, soldiers who volunteer to challenge the odds and save lives in one of the world’s most dangerous jobs. Three [...]

Kathryn Bigelow’s Iraq War-set “The Hurt Locker”, about a unit of bomb disposal soldiers, was supposed to come out in 2008, but it’s been shelved indefinitely, probably because every Iraq War-set movie that has been released so far has, as the kids say, bit the big one at the box office. I don’t think there has been a successful Iraq War-set anything since, well, the actual Iraq War itself got started. Why? Probably because no one wants to see a fictional telling of how shitty it is over there since the media has already shown us how shitty it is every day for the last five years. Anyways, here’s the trailer for “The Hurt Locker”, scheduled to open … one of these days. Maybe.
Baghdad, 2007: Not where you want to be.
The cradle of civilization has become a city of bombs. Every fifteen minutes an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) explodes with deadly impact … or must be disarmed.
Enter the bomb squad [...]

I’ve been looking forward to Kathryn Bigelow’s Iraq War-set “The Hurt Locker” ever since I heard about it, and saw this very cool poster. Although I’m probably the only one, considering the public’s seemingly complete lack of interest in Iraq War-themed movies. Hasn’t every single movie about the Iraq War bombed harder than a Pamela Anderson marriage? Anyhoo, check out the very first images from “The Hurt Locker” below.

Haven’t heard from Kathryn Bigelow in a while, which is too bad. It’s not neveryday you run across a 50-something woman who can do action movies, and Bigelow has proven that she can do the genre as well as, if not better, than most of her fellow male directors. (”Near Dark”, “Point Break”, and “Strange Days”, anyone?) According to IMDB, she hasn’t done a feature-length film since 2002’s “K19: The Widowmaker”, which bombed at about the same time as Harrison Ford’s movie career. Her newest and latest is “The Hurt Locker”, which just got a poster (via), and it looks all kinds of cool. Seriously, that is one awesome looking poster. I hope the movie itself is as good, but if not — well, we’ll always have the poster.
So what’s “The Hurt Locker”?
