In my review of “Syriana” last year, I noted that many viewers who were apparently befuddled by that film were probably expecting an action movie since there was an explosion in the film’s trailer. “The Kingdom” would have been that film. Not to be confused with Lars von Trier’s hospital horror mini-series of the same name, this latest effort from former Soap Opera heart throb turned big screen actor/director Peter Berg (”The Rundown”) is a rather disorganized jumble of Rambo-style action and 21st century sham diplomacy.
The film begins with a slick opening credits sequence that gives us a quick potted history of US-Saudi relations, starting with the discovery of oil on the Arabian Peninsula in the 1930s through the current post-9/11 conditions. It then cuts to an American housing compound in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, where the residents are chillin’ and grillin’ at a softball game. This suburban solitude is rudely interrupted by a gang of [...]

If you’ve been dying to see director Peter Berg’s gritty take on terrorism on Saudi soil, “The Kingdom”, then you’re in luck. Yahoo! Movies is hosting a 4-minute clip from the film — or, to be more precise, the first four minutes from the movie — that chronicles the U.S. involvement with Saudia Arabia from the past to the present. It’s a damn fine introduction to the relationship between the two countries, and easily sets up the story Berg wants to tell. I’m telling you, Berg is good, man, he’s real good, and I’m dying to see this movie.
When a terrorist bomb detonates inside a Western housing compound in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, an international incident is ignited. While diplomats slowly debate equations of territorialism, FBI Special Agent Ronald Fleury quickly assembles an elite team and negotiates a secret five-day trip into Saudi Arabia to locate the madman behind the bombing. Upon landing in the desert kingdom, however, Fleury and his [...]

During a press junket for his upcoming “The Kingdom”, director Peter Berg talked about the film’s ending — or more specifically, the original script ending that DIDN’T make it into the movie. Not only did the original ending not make it into the film, but it wasn’t even filmed, according to Berg, because so many people were against it, including producer Michael Mann and the Universal studio chief, who apparently called Berg in person to make sure Berg knew that the ending in screenwriter Matt Carnahan’s script was NOT going to happen. So, if you read on, be aware that there are POSSIBLE SPOILERS below in Berg’s story, so use your own judgement.
Says Berg about the (never filmed) ending:
“In the original script by Matt Carnahan, who is a GENIUS, the character of Haytham was much more sort of politically schizophrenic. He was attempting to find a moderate lifestyle. So even though his brother killed in Iraq and his father was [...]

The more I hear about Peter Berg’s “The Kingdom”, the more anxious I am to see it. It looks like it has the makings of a major, slam-bang, hide the kids and take the old folks to the retirement home sort of movie. And if it doesn’t end up being as substantial as I’m anticipating that it will be, then at least the action should sustain my attention. There are two things to keep in mind about “The Kingdom”: Peter Berg is becoming a major force in action filmmaking, and Jamie Foxx is becoming a really good actor, and has removed himself completely from his sitcom days. This is some serious work here, folks, by both men. And of course, Jen Garner with an assault rifle is just beautiful to watch.

Jennifer Garner and Jamie Foxx’s Middle Eastern action-thriller “The Kingdom” gets a new poster (thumbnail to your left, bigger version below), and it looks, well, like an action movie starring Jennifer Garner and Jamie Foxx, which seems to be the whole point. Um. Anyways. The Peter Berg directed film has been getting pretty good buzz, and is being called gritty, action-packed, and at the same time, pretty bloody. Basically, my kind of movie. And Berg is an extremely talented director, and I’m really looking forward to what he does with a balls-out action movie.
A team of U.S. counter-terrorism investigators set out to find the perpetrators behind a deadly attack on Americans in a Middle Eastern country. In order to work through the bureaucracy and cultural hostility, the team enlists a local police officer, but still finds itself target for the terrorists.
Starring Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman, Tom Bresnahan, and directed by Peter Berg.

“The Kingdom”: A third trailer has been added to Apple’s Quicktime movie trailers page for Peter Berg’s Middle East political actioner. I haven’t seen it, because I really want to save up the surprise for the actual movie. Berg + Foxx + Garner = Good stuff. Berg + Guns + Garner Holding Machineguns = Damn I gotta see this. Head over to Apple here for the trailer in glorious Quicktime. “The Kingdom” opens September 28th.
“Rush Hour 3″: The Chinese Government has just cost Jackie Chan millions of dollars by banning the film from the country. Their explanation: “‘Rush Hour 3′ will not be shown in China. We think it will not be popular in China,” Xiao Ping, a VP at China Film Group’s import and export arm, said Thursday. Geez, couldn’t they at least TRY to come up with a better lie? The biggest loser is Jackie Chan and his millions of fans in China, but mostly Jackie Chan, whose [...]

Peter Berg’s “The Kingdom” is definitely on my radar, and has been for a while now. I’m a big fan of Berg, has been ever since the wild and frenzy of “The Rundown”, and he’s proven my confidence in him correct with the equally great “Friday Night Lights”. His latest, “The Kingdom” looks to be a pretty gritty story with some insane action thrown in every now and then (and from reviews I’ve read, this is towards the end when the movie becomes one long chase/gunfight). But this definitely looks and feels more like a “tense political thriller” than a “slam-bang action movie”, and I would prefer it that way. To treat this kind of subject right, and without the simplistic nature to politics that Hollywood usually approaches such subject matters, requires a pretty rigid and cool hand behind the camera. I think Berg can do that.
Over at Yahoo! Movies there is a new high-definition trailer for “The Kingdom”. It [...]
