Nicole Kidman kicks alian ass, former Miss World Aishwarya Rai kicks gladiator ass, and Judd Apatow tries to kick the box office’s ass with three hits in a roll. Your Weekend Movie Preview starts with Nicole Kidman in “The Invasion”, the contemporary remake of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”, set in D.C. in present times. The troubled production has been getting mixed reviews by just about everyone, but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying what should be a sci-fi paranoid thriller with plenty of action, if the rumors that the Wachowski Brothers were brought in to amp up the action are true.
The company line:
The mysterious crash of the space shuttle leads to the terrifying discovery that there is something alien within the wreckage. Those who come in contact with it are changing in ominous and inexplicable ways. Soon Washington, DC psychiatrist Carol Bennell and her friend, Dr. Ben Driscoll, learn the shocking truth about the growing extraterrestrial epidemic: it attacks [...]

It looks like the Weinstein Company is doing a pretty big push for “The Last Legion”, which is very surprising to me. Trailers for the movie are popping all over the place, and it basically gives away the film’s major plot twist right away — which is that the story is all one big origin of the King Arthur legend. I reviewed the film last month (read it here, including movie images), and found it to be lacking. It looked like a TV movie someone was trying to pass off as a feature-length film worthy of a theatrical release. I’m sorry to say that it’s not. Put this thing on TV (or the USA Network) and put commercials around it, and I can see it fitting in. But on the big screen? People are going to come away feeling gypped.
The plot:

There is one very clever, even brilliant sequence in “The Last Legion” that features Aishwarya Rai’s warrior woman. In it, the good guys have just scaled the walls of an island castle in order to rescue the imprisoned boy Caesar within, and must now deal with the prison’s army of Goth captors. The men in the group heads off, leaving Rai’s character to battle one Goth. Suddenly, two, three, then a whole army of Goths show up all around her. Basically, the men’s idea of chivalry, giving the girl the one Goth while they go face the real villains, ends up with the girl killing nearly all of the Goths single-handedly. It’s just a strangely fantastic moment in an otherwise forgettable film.
The film stars Colin Firth as Aurelius, a Roman General who still believes in honor, duty, and country, which comes in handy when he’s assigned to guard Rome’s newest Caesar, a young boy named Romulus (Thomas Sangster). Unfortunately for [...]
