Let’s face it, being trapped in a supermarket with just your ordinary shoppers is bad enough, but add winged bat-like things with fangs and other assorted nightmarish creatures to the mix, and it’s just gonna suck big time. That’s the plot of Frank Darabont’s “The Mist”, which was based on the Stephen King story of the same name, and starred Thomas Jane. To help promote the release of the DVD, the studio is giving away free DVD copies of “The Mist” (along with 4 other of their favorite Stephen King films), and all you have to do is tell them how you would defend a supermarket surrounded by creatures using nothing but items found in said supermarkets. More details below.

Stephen King does horror. Is there anything else that needs to be said? If you’re a horror movie fan, you’re already giddy. You add the name Frank Darabont to anything with Stephen King in it, and you’re looking at, at the very least, a good movie. Could it also be great? Possibly. When Darabont does King, things always gets interesting. But this is Darabont’s first foray into horror territory with King, and that’s not a sure bet. Advance reviews for the film seems to be very positive, and I’ve liked what I’ve seen of the movie so far. So, for those of you still undecided, here is your official preview of Frank Darabont and Stephen King’s “The Mist”, starring Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden, Andre Braugher, and Toby Jones.
The plot:

Stephen King fans will probably hate the news that Frank Darabont has changed the ending of Stephen King’s short novella “The Mist” for the movie version. According to Darabont himself, his ending will be “definitive”, while King’s was open-ended and left to interpretation. Now as I was saying, many King fans will be a little peeved that Darabont dared to change the master’s ending, but as for me, I’m kind of glad he did. Not that I’ve read the novella, mind you, but because every Stephen King horror movie I have seen has always ended, well, stupid. Remember the giant spider in “It”? The alien bugs in “Dreamcatcher”? The point is, the ending to Stephen King horror stories (and I’m just talking about the horror ones here) have never ended with any satisfaction for me. Now that Darabont has admitted that he changed King’s ending — yeah, I want to see “The Mist” now. I’m that easy.
Here’s what Darabont said:

I was looking forward to “The Mist” for a number of reasons: I’m a fan of Thomas Jane, the film’s star, and movies about people trapped in an isolated location and surrounded by nefarious creatures (or in this case, a supernatural fog) is my perfect movie premise. Then again, I just saw the trailer for “The Mist”, and um, it kinda blows. As in, “Gee, King sure didn’t waste anytime burning the bible at the stake, did he?” Plus, winged little bats are the things in the fog? Um, okay, Stephen, you’ve once again built up the perfect set-up, kinda made an interesting middle, and totally FUBAR the ending. As usual. But hey, maybe I’m wrong. See for yourself.

So sue me, but I’m looking forward to the Thomas Jane horror movie “The Mist”. The film is based on a story by Stephen King, but that isn’t why I’m excited. I love this kind of movie. I call them “last stand in a haunted house” movies, where a group of bickering people must take refuge in a building as evil things close in around them. It will always take place in an isolated location, of course, which means no help is coming. Man, I can’t get enough of these movies. But anyways, a poster for “The Mist” has popped up, and it has a very retro feel to it. I’m not saying I like it, I’m just saying — well, see for yourself.
