What else is there to say except World War II was Goddamn brutal, but it had to be fought. From Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg comes the “Band of Brothers” movie for the next decade, the epic mini-series “The Pacific”. As the title implies, this one doesn’t bother with the war in Europe, but will instead take a look at the hell in the Pacific, and follows a cast of Marines as they invade the Japanese islands on their way to taking down the Empire. HBO released the second trailer last month. As with “Band of Brothers”, the actors are mostly unknowns, which is the way it should be because this isn’t a mini-series about actors, it’s about the people they’re playing. HBO premieres the mini-series next year in March.

How long have I been waiting to see Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg return to the land of World War II mini-series aka “The Pacific”? Forever, it seems. The duo already gave us the genre-defining “Band of Brothers”, set entirely in the European theater of WWII, and now they’ve moved their focus over to the pacific and the battle against the Japanese. Take a look at the trailer shown over the weekend below. One word: EPIC. The visuals in this thing are out of this world, and if it can reach just half the heights of “Band of Brothers” — a tall order, indeed — it’ll have accomplished its mission.
A 10-part mini-series from the creators of “Band of Brothers” telling the intertwined stories of three Marines during America’s battle with the Japanese in the Pacific during World War II.
Directors for the 10-parter include Carl Franklin, David Nutter, Timothy Van Patten, and Jeremy Podeswa. The mini-series will star Isabel Lucas, [...]

How much am I looking forward to Tom Hanks’ return to World War II, this time in the Pacific theater, with the epic mini-series “The Pacific”? So much that I’m even contemplating signing up for HBO just so I can see the episodes as they are rolled out on their first-runs, instead of waiting for the DVD or, ahem, using other means to see them, the way I did with “Band of Brothers”. Collider recently had a chance to talk to Hanks about “The Pacific”, and here are the highlights.
Via:
Collider: I was going to ask you specifically about “The Pacific”. How is that going?
Tom Hanks: It’s half-way done. There are going to be 10 hours in there I think we just started our 5th hour down there.
Collider: And how would you compare it to “Band of Brothers”?
Tom Hanks: It has to be different because it just can’t be the same theme. It’s not as clean as [...]

Hanks and Spielberg’s Pacific Mini-Series Lands its Three Leads

If you are not excited for “Pacific”, the new World War II mini-series from producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, than you just don’t appreciate good storytelling. Forget that this will be a 10-part mini-series (probably consisting of hour-long episodes if it follows the pattern set by the duo’s 2001 mini “Band of Brothers”) shown on HBO; Hanks and Spielberg just knows this terrain (“Saving Private Ryan”, anyone?), and in my eyes they can’t possibly mess this up. And now news is that the duo have found their three male stars, who will lead the ensemble cast as three Marines whose stories will span battles at Guadalcanal to their return home: James Badge Dale, Joe Mazzello and Val Lauren.
From the Hollywood Reporter:
The 10-hour mini, a companion piece to Hanks and Spielberg’s Emmy-winning 2001 World War II saga “Band of Brothers,” tracks the intertwined odysseys of three U.S. Marines — Robert Leckie (Dale), John Basilone (Lauren) and Eugene Sledge (Mazzello) — [...]
