It’s not easy trying to keep your kid alive, what with all the cannibals running around licking their lips. For one, kids being kids, they don’t always listen to you, and let’s face it, haven’t we all entertained the idea of selling our kids for a nice meal at least once? Or not. Here are some new images from John Hillcoat’s depress-a-ton, aka his adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road”. Sure it’s depressing as shit and you’ll probably want to slit your wrist after seeing it, but man, does it all look visually awesome or what?

Apparently the studio has figured out that John Hillcoat’s faithful adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel “The Road” is a tad, shall we say, light on the pep. That might be the primary reason behind this new trailer (via Yahoo!), which seems to be trying to convince you things might work out for our father and son team as they wander the apocalypse, dodging cannibals and other assorted scoundrels. You can see for yourself if there’s any salvation at the end of “The Road” when it opens November 25, 2009. Until then, you can read our review of the movie here.

“The Road” is an adaptation of the 2006 novel of the same name by author Cormac McCarthy, whose novel “No Country for Old Men” was adapted into last year’s Best Picture Oscar winner. “The Road” obviously has similar aspirations: It’s a haunting, beautifully crafted film with great performances, but it still falls somewhat short of its goals.
The movie takes place in a near future where the planet has been devastated by an apocalyptic event. We never find out exactly how the world ended, and none of the characters seem to know either. But the skies are always gray, there are constant earthquakes and fires, and nearly all vegetation and animal life have been wiped out. What’s left of the human race has mostly descended into violence, anarchy, and cannibalism just to survive.
Viggo Mortensen (credited only as “The Man”) travels the desolate countryside with his son, Kodi Smit-McPhee (credited as “The Boy”). Charlize Theron, “The Wife”, is glimpsed only in flashbacks [...]

Let’s face it, John Hillcoat’s “The Road”, based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy, is gonna depress the hell outta you. It’s a drab, dark, and gritty little film with a big Hollywood budget about an unnamed man and his unnamed son as they try to survive in a post-apocalyptic America. This involves running afoul of cannibals, guys with guns, crazy old men at campfires, and diving for food. It’s good fun if you can survive it. Check out five whopping extended clips from the movie that have shown up on YouTube.
Based on Cormac McCarthy’s best-selling and Pulitzer Prize winning novel, “The Road” is the epic post-apocalyptic tale of a journey taken by a father and his young son across a barren landscape that was blasted by an unnamed cataclysm that destroyed civilization and most life on earth.
Starring Charlize Theron, Viggo Mortensen, Garret Dillahunt, Guy Pearce, Robert Duvall, Molly Parker, Michael K. Williams, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Brenna Roth, and directed by [...]

We’ve waited a long time for the first trailer for the “The Road”. There is no doubt a movie based on Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer prize winning novel about a man and his son’s hard travels across a devastated America would be difficult to make right. Difficult to make it honest enough to the source material. Here’s our first look.

Can’t get enough depressing images from a post-apocalyptic America via John Hillcoat’s upcoming “The Road”? You’re in luck, buckaroos, because we have more images from the movie, including better versions of what you’ve already seen. In the film, Viggo Mortensen plays a nameless father who, along with his nameless son, must traverse a post-apocalyptic America, fighting cannibals, militias, and apparently bad fashion sense along the way. Hey, whatever it takes to survive, right?
Co-starring Kodi Smit-McPhee, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearc, Robert Duvall, and Garret Dillahunt. John Hillcoat (”The Proposition”) directs.
Hit the road November 26.

I’ve never read Cormac McCarthy’s book of the same name, but I’ll be damn if the words “bleak”, “depressing”, and “slit your wrist from depression” doesn’t appear in every single article I’m reading on the movie. (OKay, maybe not the last part, but definitely the first two.) USA Today has followed the New York Times with an article on the making of the movie’s dark world, which follows a nameless man and his son as they try to survive a post-apocalyptic America.
“It’s tangible, the misery and hopelessness and the bleakness,” Mortensen says. “It gives you much more to work with if you’re filming in that world instead of a green screen.

A couple of first images from Viggo Mortensen’s new post-apocalyptic horror movie “The Road” have appeared online over the last week or so. (I hesitate to call it horror, but I guess it has to be, what with cannibals being involved and whatnot, right?) The New York Times also did an extensive story on the project, including interviews with the director John Hillcoat and star Viggo Mortensen. The filmmakers seem to want to distance themselves from the likes of “Mad Max”, which they consider a fantastical version of the apocalypse. Theirs, on the other hand, will be gritty and as real as possible.
Hillcoat said this about his film’s attempt at realism:
“What’s moving and shocking about McCarthy’s book is that it’s so believable,” Mr. Hillcoat said. “So what we wanted is a kind of heightened realism, as opposed to the ‘Mad Max’ thing, which is all about high concept and spectacle. We’re trying to avoid the clichés of apocalypse and make [...]

Eleven year old Australian kid actor Kodi Smit-McPhee is about to get his big break in Hollywood: he will be co-starring alongside Viggo Mortensen in the post-apocalyptic drama/horror/action film “The Road”. In the flick, Viggo and Kodi must battle zombies cannibals and other assorted horror as they journey across a devasted U.S. And I thought my day was going badly!
More:
Smit-McPhee, 11, will play Mortensen’s son in the tale of a monthslong journey across a barren U.S. landscape after a cataclysmic event destroyed most of life on Earth. Charlize Theron co-stars in the Dimension Films drama.
I’ve always been a fan of post-apocalyptic movies (hey, I was one of the three people who actually liked “Waterworld”!), so the premise of “The Road” is right up my alley, right down to the endangered kid.

Nuclear explosions suck already, but then cannibals? Oy vey. And now, Charlize Theron? Yup, it’s true. Theron has officially joined the cast of the horror/sci-fi movie “The Road”, which will star Viggo Mortensen. The movie is a big screen adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s bestselling novel of the same name.
Story centers on a man who embarks on a nightmarish road trip after a nuclear explosion in an attempt to transport his son to safety while fending off cannibals. Aussie helmer John Hillcoat (”The Proposition”) is directing from a screenplay by Joe Penhall.
Theron will be playing Mortensen’s wife, who will be seen mostly in flashbacks. Wait, no cannibalistic Charlize Theron? What a gyp.
