There’s no denying the hard work. talent and sheer enthusiasm author Mark Cotta Vaz pours into his movie companion books. The Spirit: The Movie Visual Companion is definitely some of his best work, to date. It could be said that Mark’s biggest passion lies with animation. One of his earlier books chronicled the first fifty years of the Batman empire. He clearly understands the creative arc as a story goes from a poorly received graphic novel to a media blockbuster and what it takes to translate that from page to screen to book. His appreciation is obvious but his desire to sensationalize the efforts of director Frank Miller and producers Deborah Del Prete and Michael Uslan tends to lean toward fawning regard.
The book opens with an introduction from Frank Miller. It’s a damn good thing that Frank didn’t try to write the entire book himself. Frank obviously considered Will Eisner to be [...]

To be honest with you, I’m a little surprised by the lackluster reaction to Frank Miller’s big-screen adaptation of “The Spirit”. The advance word of mouth haven’t been kind, and this looks like it could be another “The Phantom” — a forgettable superhero movie about a superhero people didn’t really know about in the first place, and didn’t really care to get to know. I don’t think I’ve heard a single good thing about the film, but I have to admit, personally, I kinda like what I’m seeing. All the promo images that have been released so far leads me to believe this thing could be a really fun movie.
Sure, it probably won’t be the “Sin City 2″ that everyone wants, but does everything have to be “Sin City”? This is Frank Miller, after all, who has done everything from introducing the world to 300 brave Spartans to re-inventing Batman and Daredevil for the masses. Why wouldn’t he be [...]

Is Frank Miller’s “The Spirit” gonna suck like nothing that has ever sucked before, or will it surprise a whole lot of people and make a ton of money, so much money in fact that Frank Miller could be walking down the block shouting, “I’m the king of the world!” You decide. No, really, you’re going to have to decide when the movie opens in 2009, because only your hardearned dollars (or lack thereof) will prove to the studio that Frank Miller knows what he’s doing when he made “The Spirit”, or he should be sent back to the comic book drawing board. If Miller has anything to say about it, the comic book world will have to wait. Here is an interview Frank recently did with the LA Times and a bevy of new images from the movie.
Highlights from the interview with the LAT:
“I adored Will Eisner and took a real ‘Don’t tread on me’ approach when I came [...]

Okay, so who is the genius that decided not to release this latest trailer for Frank Miller’s “The Spirit” earlier? You know, before all the bad whispering about the movie got started and grew and grew? IDIOTS! Now THIS is a trailer! One thing about the trailer immediately stood out that I hadn’t realized before — it may be noir and it may be mostly set in the good old days of Tommy gun packing gangsters, but everything else about the film seems to be modernized, including the machineguns and attack helicopters. It’s all very anachronistic and actually looks more like something Miller would do than the previous trailers. Whoever cut the trailer — much props, my man, I’m now actually excited about this movie again!
Adapted from the legendary comic strip, The Spirit is a classic action-adventure-romance told by genre-twister Frank Miller (creator of 300 and Sin City). It is the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously [...]

At this point, Frank Miller’s “The Spirit” will end up as the greatest movie ever made, or the most misunderstood movie ever made. Misunderstood by who, you ask? The fans, the critics, and even the guy making it, probably. Nothing I’ve seen of the film has convinced me it will be as great as, say, “Sin City” or any number of Miller’s other works. The culprit, I think, may be the film’s way too cartoony vibe that seems to pervade every inch of this thing, from the corny quotes on the posters to the footages that have been released so far. According to those who have seen one particular clip from the movie, at one point the Spirit and his nemesis, the Octopus beats each other over the head with toilets. I am not making that up.
In any case, here are two new character posters for the movie courtesy of Lionsgate.
Down these mean streets a man must come. A [...]

I’ve been hearing two very conflicting reports about “The Spirit’s” Comic Con appearance: on one hand, the fanboys seem to think it blew the big donkey chunks, and that the only thing more excruciating about the panel was the control-freak of a producer sitting next to Frank Miller; on the other hand, people who aren’t necessarily geeks think it went pretty well, and that Miller was great. Who to believe? Bah, who knows. Anyways, footage from the “Spirit” panel have leaked onto the net, including what looks like the final fight scene between the Spirit (Gabriel Macht) and The Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson). Why they would show the final, climactic fight between the hero and villain at the con is a mystery that only the Gods know.
Down these mean streets a man must come. A hero born, murdered, and born again. When a Rookie cop named Denny Colt returns from the beyond as The Spirit, a hero whose mission is [...]

You know, I’ve had plenty of women problems in my life, but this Spirit guy? Ooooh boy, he’s got his hands full. There are the good girls, the bad girls, the mysterious girls, and the ones in-between. As the Octopus says, what is the deal with this guy and all these girls? It must be the mask, I reckon. Anyways, here’s the full trailer for Frank Miller’s upcoming “The Spirit”. This one showed up as a bootleg on the net yesterday, but Lionsgate went around pulling them. This morning, the trailer showed up at Yahoo! Movies, and as such, is making the rounds again, except this time your friendly webmaster won’t be getting a letter from the bad, bad men.
Adapted from the Will Eisner’s graphic novels, “The Spirit” tells the story of a man who fakes his own death and fights crime from the shadows of Central City. The Octopus — who kills anyone unfortunate enough to see his face [...]

I get the sneaking suspicion that Frank Miller’s live-action move version of Will Eisner’s “The Spirit” character isn’t going to be appreciated by everyone who ends up seeing it. Chances are, a lot of people aren’t going to “get” what Miller is trying to do with the character, if the odd reaction to the movie’s first trailer is any indication. Then again, if you’ve enjoyed Miller’s work since he started on the “Sin City” books, then you’ll probably get a kick out of it. Probably. I don’t know for sure, of course. Anyways, here’s The Spirit on the August issue cover of Total Film magazine.

You know, for a movie based on a comic book that was first created in 1940, there sure is a lot of sex oozing out of every celluloid pore of Frank Miller’s adaptation of “The Spirit”. Mind you, not that I’m complaining, but I wonder if the finished product will have even 1% the sex appeal of all this advertising for the movie we’re seeing, especially all the film’s bevy of femme fatales — Eva Mendes, Scarlett Johansson, Jaime King, and Sarah Paulson. Each woman has gotten their own character posters with (presumably) something they’ve said in the film in quotes.
Now, being the clever boys they are, Lionsgate and Yahoo! Movies have joined forces to give you all four women’s character posters on one page, in swf form, with actual audio from the actresses saying their lines.
Head over here to see it now. Run your mouse pointer over the posters to hear the actresses say their lines. The pics [...]

In comic book guru Frank Miller’s big screen adaptation of Will Eisner’s The Spirit, Scarlett Johansson plays a villainess named Silken Floss, a character that likes to dress up in a nurse’s uniform and stab helpless old people in hospitals with syringes; that is, when she’s not helping out The Octopus (played by Samuel L. Jackson) throw bums in front of speeding subway cars. What, she doesn’t do any of that in “The Spirit”? Well, they do do that in the comic books I read. In any case, in this character poster for “The Spirit”, Silken Floss wants you to get on your knees, which makes no sense, but then again, it’s noir, it’s Frank Miller, so deal with it, chumps.

Considering that every female character in a Miller story either ends up seducing and then stabbing her lover in the back, or just gunning them down after spitting in his face, I’m gonna have to go with “No” there, Eva.

Frank Miller knows you’re concern about his big screen adaptation of Will Eisner’s The Spirit character, and he’s got something to say to you — SHUT UP! No, just kidding. Frank Miller actually goes to great lengths to dispel fears that he’s changing up Eisner’s The Spirit too much for contemporary times, or that he’s getting too much into the “Sin City” style. In a new blog entry that SuperheroHype has been given a sneak peek at, Miller takes the concerns he’s heard about his handling of the Spirit, and addresses them.
Some excerpts from Miller’s blog below — you can read the rest of it at SuperheroHype.
Firstly, about the changing of the blue hat, mask, and suit to all black:
Comic books have long traditions based on the limitations of pre-digital printing. Among these are traditions from the old newsprint-run-through-letterpress approach (yes, comics have been—and still do–follow tradition that dates all the way back to Gutenberg!). Bad printing on pulp paper [...]

Jackson as The Octopus, the main villain in Frank Miller’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Will Eisner’s “The Spirit” comic books. This is not actually our first look at him, but it is our first look at him in costume, if you will, although I’m not sure if a mink coat and gloves qualifies as a “costume”, but there you have it.
Rookie cop Denny Colt returns from the beyond as The Spirit, a hero whose mission is to fight against the bad forces in Central City.
The Spirit gets into the, uh, spirit December 25, 2008.
The image comes on the cover of the second issue of Comic-Con Magazine.

Well you’re in luck, because Lionsgate feels your pain and they’ve decided to move the film’s release date up from a January 16, 2009 release to a December 25, 2008 release. Yup, you’re going to get into the Spirit, as it were, much earlier than expected. Makes visiting the in-laws a lot more tolerable, doesn’t it?
The Hollywood Reporter has the good news:
Of the move, Lionsgate president of theatrical films Tom Ortenberg said: “Comic-Con fans (in New York in March) resoundingly confirmed what we felt in our bones about ‘The Spirit’: this is a great film and an irresistible piece of entertainment. … For all of us, it was an easy decision.”
Wow. A movie studio listening to the fanbase and giving them what they want. What a novel idea.
“The Spirit” stars Gabriel Macht, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Sarah Paulson, Stana Katic, Dan [...]

I’ve been dying to see this thing ever since I heard Miller was going to direct it, and now it’s finally here, kids, everyone’s first look at the teaser trailer for Frank Miller’s live-action adaptation of Will Eisner’s pulp comic book hero The Spirit. The film stars Gabriel Macht as the titular vigilante, who dawns a black suit, fedora, and blood-red tie when the phone rings and he’s summoned into action. Written and directed by comic book legend Frank Miller, “The Spirit” co-stars Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, and of course, Samuel L. Jackson as the villainous Octopus. Trailer below.
Down these mean streets a man must come. A hero born, murdered, and born again. When a Rookie cop named Denny Colt returns from the beyond as The Spirit, a hero whose mission is to fight against the bad forces from the shadows of Central City. The Octopus who kills anyone unfortunate enough to see his face who has other plans. He’s [...]

I guess Lionsgate realizes that there are a lot of interest for their little movie “The Spirit”. I hear it’s a no-budget prestige picture for the film. Just kidding, of course. But Lionsgate is starting to release images from the movie, first the groovy posters, then those looks at Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson as the Octopus, and now they’ve released a new poster for the movie and our first look at Eva Mendes’ Sand Saref. And yes, Eva Mendes fills out that costume of hers very nicely, but then again, did anyone have any doubt?
Adapted from the Will Eisner’s graphic novels, “The Spirit” tells the story of a man who fakes his own death and fights crime from the shadows of Central City. The Octopus — who kills anyone unfortunate enough to see his face — has other plans. He’s going to wipe out the entire city. The Spirit tracks this coldhearted killer from the city’s rundown warehouses, [...]

Lionsgate yanked all the images of The Spirit that were leaked onto the net last week, but apparently they didn’t think to tell DC Comics not to show us what the Spirit looks like in full costume, because the site has released a look at the Spirit 1:6 scale Deluxe Collector Figure, which is going on sale December 17, 2008 for $99.99 a pop. When was the last time you bought an action figure for almost $100 bucks? Well here’s your chance if you’re so inclined. See what the Spirit looks like in toy form below.
More (via):
This 1:6 scale figure is clothed in an authentically detailed film outfit including suit, overcoat, hat and non-removable mask. Manufactured to order. Packaged in a deluxe 4-color window box with a fifth panel.
So does he come with the manhole cover or what?

Finally, actual movie images from Frank Miller’s “The Spirit”. They’re not nearly as revealing, or many, actually, as the ones that were leaked onto the net a few days ago, but what the hey, posting these will mean no letters from Lionsgate threatening to burn down my house, so that’s good, right? Two images showing Scarlett Johansson as Silken Floss and Samuel L. Jackson as The Octopus, both in character, and what looks like finished work from the movie. No green screen here, folks.
Rookie cop Denny Colt returns from the beyond as The Spirit, a hero whose mission is to fight against the bad forces in Central City.
Get into the spirit January 2009.
Check out our “The Spirit” Movie Images Gallery for more pics from the movie.

Okay, so fair warning: these will probably go down pretty fast, so take a look at them as quickly as you can. The green screen images were originally posted on Dark Horizons, but within hours they quickly removed it due to a letter from Lionsgate requesting they be brought down. They’re green screen set photos from Frank Miller’s “The Spirit”, and shows pretty much all the main characters, from Scarlett Johansson to Eva Mendes to Gabriel Macht (as the Spirit), and of course, Samuel L. Jackson as the crimelord The Octopus. Check them out before they’re gone, kids.
Originally posted at Dark Horizons, but I didn’t get to them in time. They were still up at Obsessed With Film and Slash Film, though.
Man, is “The Spirit” looking good or what?
Update: 4/5/08
IMAGES REMOVED.
Told ya it’d go fast.

“My city screams. She is my lover. And I am her spirit.” That’s apparently the tagline for Frank Miller’s upcoming live-action movie version of Will Eisner’s “The Spirit”. Over at SuperheroHype, they’ve got a brand spanking new poster for the movie, officially called the “Outdoor Posters”, because there are three in all, and once placed against each other, you get one mega image with the full tagline. Check it out below. Very cool. But then again, what would you expect from a Frank Miller movie?
