Scott Mann’s “The Tournament” looks and feels like an ‘90s action movie, the kind that relies on an overly simplified premise that is supposed to pass for a storyline, but is really just an excuse for a whole lot of wanton bloodshed. Mind you, not that that’s a bad thing. In this case, it just feels a little bit overdone, and after a while all the shooting, eccentric characters, and violence dulls the senses and makes you question the meaning. Naaaaaaah. Kidding, kidding. It just gets tedious after a while, that’s all, which is something you don’t want an audience to say especially when things (and people) are blowing up every other minute in your movie. In fact, if not for Robert Carlyle as a drunkard priest, the film feels more like 90 minutes of bullet squib practice for an actual movie that hasn’t been greenlit for production yet.
“The Tournament” has one of those premise that fits on a movie [...]

In “The Tournament”, Robert Carlyle plays a small-town priest who gets unwittingly dragged into a bloody tournament taking place covertly in his town. Okay, it’s not all that covert, there are guys running around with sniper rifles and bazookas trying to off each other. Actually, it’s pretty obvious, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but there you have it. Here’s a clip from Scott Mann’s actioner “The Tournament”, featuring Carlyle’s character as he finds himself in the crosshairs of some killer types.
Every seven years in an unsuspecting town, The Tournament takes place. A battle royale between 30 of the world’s deadliest assassins. The last man standing receiving the $10,000,000 cash prize and the title of Worlds No 1, which itself carries the legendary million dollar a bullet price tag.
Starring Ian Somerhalder, Ving Rhames, Robert Carlyle, Kelly Hu, Scott Adkins, Liam Cunningham, John Lynch, Andy Nyman, Craig Conway, Rachel Grant, and directed by Scott Mann.

Scott Mann’s “The Tournament” reminds me a lot of those drive-by action films from the ’80s and ’90s, where the story is really just a flimsy excuse to throw an endless barrage of action sequences at the audience and, in general, blow shit up. Hey, not that that’s a bad thing. Word from THR is that Mann’s “The Tournament” will open the Screamfest Horror Film Festival, though I’m not sure it exactly qualifies as horror, but eh, genre lines, who cares anymore, right?
The film, which was finished a while ago, since I’ve been keeping track of it for the last few years, doesn’t currently have a North American distributor, and the hope is that the film’s premiere at Screamfest will elicit an offer to distribute. The filmmakers are hoping for a “Kick Ass” effect, where the Matthew Vaughn film, which was without a distributor due to its controversial content, made a huge splash at Comic Con earlier this year, resulting [...]

Kelly Hu, Ving Rhames, and Scott Adkins play assassins that, along with 27 others, descend upon an unsuspecting town to engage in a battle royale where the last one standing leaves with $10 million in prize money. For some reason, the filmmakers thought it would be a good idea to introduce a priest played by Robert Carlyle into the mix, who gets mistaken for one of the assassins when he accidentally sips coffee with someone’s tracking device inside. Check out the trailer for the action-a-second “The Tournament” from director Scott Mann below.

Haven’t heard a whole lot about Scott Mann’s “The Tournament” since we posted a lengthy teaser video for the movie mid-2007. Well the latest is that the film’s official site has posted some stills from the movie, including our first look at Kelly Hu (who was not in the video, which was shot well before the film’s final cast was even casted). Check it out below.
Every ten years in an unsuspecting town, The Tournament takes place. A battle royale between 40 of the world’s deadliest assassins. The last man standing receiving the $10,000,000 cash prize and the title of Worlds No1, which itself carries the legendary million dollar a bullet price tag. All fights are monitored 24hrs a day on redirected CCTV cameras and broadcast secretly to a ring of high stake billionaire gamblers. A gritty, multistranded action-thriller, The Tournament brings together international killers from every imaginable discipline in a blood-bathed contest to the death. We follow the competition favourites [...]

The more I hear about the upcoming movie “The Tournament”, the more I’m convinced it could be really good or really average. To be honest with you, the premise sounds more than a little “B-Movie” territory to me. It reminds me of the ’90s, when indie producers would throw together a “tournament plotline” and get a bunch of non-actors to fight in a cage, bookending the whole thing with a lame storyline to justify all the action they’re getting from the gratuitous fights. But in any case, Scott Mann’s “The Tournament” have added three faces to its cast: Ving Rhames, Robert Carlyle, and Kelly Hu.
The plot (as written by Mann himself):
Every ten years in an unsuspecting town, The Tournament takes place. A battle royale between 40 of the world’s deadliest assassins. The last man standing receiving the $10,000,000 cash prize and the title of Worlds No1, which itself carries the legendary million dollar a bullet price tag. All fights are [...]
