It took a while, but someone’s finally nabbed the Jet Li/Andy Lau Chinese epic “The Warlords” for North American distribution. THR reports that Magnolia Pictures, who have been very good at acquiring and treating their Asian movies with some measure of respect (as opposed to, you know, those other guys, who are brothers, and you know who I’m talking about), is looking at releasing the film by the end of the year before sending it to DVD.
“The Warlords” is a long time coming, having been released back in 2007. It stars some of Asia’s biggest leading men, including Hong Kong’s Jet Li and Andy Lau, and Japan’s Takeshi Kaneshiro, who has somehow ended up in pretty much every big-budget Chinese epic since, gosh, whenever they started making these things. Of course, Andy Lau’s no slouch, either.
“The Warlords” is directed by Peter Chan, and is a heroic tale of three blood brothers and their struggle in the midst of war and [...]

The Chinese historical epic has gone from strength to strength in recent years, with films such as “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Hero” through to John Woo’s mega budgeted blockbuster “Red Cliff” bringing the past to life in increasingly grandiose fashion. One genre outing which has stood out from the ever growing crowd of pomp and spectacle obsessed productions is Peter Chan’s “The Warlords”. Originally released across Asia back in 2007 and having since enjoyed a successful run on screens in the West, the film is a very different proposition, being far more downbeat and thoughtful than its peers. A loose remake of the 1973 Shaw Brothers classic “Blood Brothers”, the film was not only a massive hit at the box office, but also won over the critics, grabbing a slew of international accolades, including Best Film at the Golden Horse and Hong Kong Film Awards. The film has now been released on Blu Ray via Metrodome.
The film is [...]

Jet Li is the highest paid Chinese actor…EVER. The 44-year old actor was paid a cool $13 million dollars (100 million yuan) for his role in Peter Chan’s upcoming historical epic “Warlords”, and he’s not the only one striking it rich on the set. Of the film’s $40 million dollar budget, nearly half of it went to the cast, which includes Li, uber Hong Kong star Andy Lau, and Japanese actor Takeshi Kaneshiro. The producers cite Li’s international fame and calls his addition to the cast a “guarantee” that the movie will sell globally, hence the huge paycheck, the most ever for a Chinese actor in a Chinese film.
So how did Jet Li ended up becoming the $13 million dollar man? A combination of major hits like “Fearless”, “Hero”, and more exposure thanks to his Hollywood films, most likely. Remember that even if Li’s Hollywood movies, like “Romeo Must Die” and the recent “War” didn’t exactly light the box office [...]

Holy, this thing looks bloody as hell, and besides the triumvirate of mega Asian movie stars, that’s apparently what the producers of “The Warlords” are selling — the bodycount. Then again, if you have Jet Li, Andy Lau, and Takeshi Kaneshiro hacking their way through half of China, similar to the Wild Bunch’s last excursion into Mexico (minus the machine guns, of course), why wouldn’t you focus on it? That seems to be where these new batch of posters and images from “The Warlords” are doing. The only thing I’m worried about with “The Warlords” is that the story itself isn’t up to snuff. From everything I’ve seen, from the trailers to the images, the focus seems to be on the fight, fight, fight.
It’s a heroic tale of three blood brothers and their struggle in the midst of war and political upheaval. It is based on “The Assassination of Ma,” a Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) story about the killing of [...]

The last time I saw a semi-trailer (more like a promo reel) for Peter Chan’s “The Warlord”, his martial arts epic starring Andy Lau, Jet Li, and Takeshi Kaneshiro, I wasn’t that impressed. It had some nice moments, but overall I thought it looked…forced. Via Asianpopcorn, here are more looks at the upcoming “Warlords”, featuring new character posters for the main players — Li, Lau, Kaneshiro, and actress Xu Jinglei — while also sporting a brand spanking new trailer for the movie, which is scheduled to hit Asia sometime December 2007. And wow, what a trailer.
The first minute of the new trailer has Li, Lau, and Kaneshiro murdering three victims in cold blood. (Unfortunately the trailer was in Chinese, so I don’t know why they did it; some kind of pact, perhaps?) The trailer then shows the movie’s money shots — large, massive battle scenes with 1000s of extras.
It’s a heroic tale of three blood brothers and their struggle [...]
