Cinematical has an exclusive on the latest The Wolfman poster, which you can see below. The poster is more suggestive of terror than anything, featuring Emily Blunt hiding in an ancient, decrepit forest from Benicio del Toro’s wolfman. It has a stylistic black and white, overlit, grainy quality that blends well with the feel of the film. The Wolfman also stars Hugo Weaving and Anthony Hopkins and will be released in theaters on February 12th, 2010.

There have been several recent monster movies, such as Underworld and Van Helsing, that have been more ridiculous and benign, cast in an action mold. I don’t know if The Wolfman is going to fare any better (trailers can be deceiving), but they certainly have the atmosphere down: the dark, bent, surreal take on Victorian England, with a profusion of modern music and effects. I welcome a film that feels more grounded, about as grounded as a monster movie can be, and not over the top, with trite one-liners and cardboard cutouts for characters. You can watch the second released trailer on Apple’s official site or below. If the film comes out of its troubled production history unscathed, then it has certainly deserved it.
The Wolfman is based on the 1941 classic. The director is Joe Johnston, who got his start in Hollywood doing visual work for the Star Wars and Indiana Jones series and as a director has done aesthetically [...]

Joe Johnston’s “The Wolf Man”, starring Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt, and the great Anthony Hopkins, used to be Mark Romanek’s “The Wolf Man” until the ever popular “creative differences” sent him packing, and Johnston was brought in to finish the production. After losing a director and getting its release date pushed back, the troubled film will finally see the inside of theaters in early 2010. February 10, 2010, to be exact. Check out the first trailer for the movie below, and see what all the fuzz, bad or otherwise, is about.
Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman, is lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father, Talbot sets out to find his brother… and discovers a horrifying destiny for himself. Talbot’s childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother’s fiancée, Gwen Conliffe, tracks him [...]

Geez, how long has it been since I’ve had anything “Fast and Furious”-related to post for you guys? Well here’s one: Universal Pictures has shuffled their 2009 movies and assigned Justin Lin’s “The Fast and Furious 4″ sequel (or just “Fast and Furious” as it’s now officially called) to an earlier release date — 3 months earlier, to be exact. I never did get why the film is taking so long to get into theaters; production began a while back, and from what I can tell, the film looks finished, or very close to finished. Anyways, the car movie has now been moved from its originally planned June 12, 2009 release to a new April 3, 2009 date. Hear that, “Fast and Furious” lovers? Your car porn is coming 3 months earlier than you expected. Get the lubes ready, boys!
But what’s good news for “Fast and Furious” fans isn’t so hot news for horror kids waiting for Benicio Del Toro’s [...]

The guys over at Empire Online has your first look at Emily Blunt and Anthony Hopkins from “The Wolfman”, including a look at star Benicio Del Toro minus hairiness. I know it’s hard to tell the difference between a wolfen Del Toro and a normal looking Del Toro, but take our word for it, this is Del Toro’s Laurence character sans wolf make-up. Joe Johnston directs, replacing original director Mark Romanek, who left the project due to “creative differences”, which in Hollywood parlance could mean anything from the studio not giving Romanek the budget he wanted to his agent failing to negotiate purple M&Ms in his daily breakfast bowl.
So what’s the flick about, Charlie Brown?
Based on the 1941 classic of the same name, The Wolfman tells of Lawrence Talbot, an actor (Del Toro) who returns to the home of his estranged father (Hopkins) after the death of his brother. Familial awkwardness becomes the least of his problems when he is [...]

Look, it’s Benecio Del Toro in Victoria-era clothes! Plus, Hugo Weaving sans sunglasses or elfen ears! Yay! Anyhoo. Two more images from the set of “The Wolfman” gives us two new looks at stars Benecio Del Toro and Hugo Weaving. The film stars Del Toro as an American who returns to “his ancestral homeland”, where he promptly gets bitten by a werewolf and becomes one. And that, ladies and gentlemen, qualifies as the worst … vacation … EVER.
More:
They’re currently filming in the English village of Lacock, where the Tithe Barn had been transformed into a rather gruesome set “where huge blocks of ice and models of dead bodies [were] strewn across the floor and hanging by metal hooks.” The article also mentions the “doomed Lacock Post Office” but it isn’t clear what has condemned the poor place.
The film co-stars Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt, and is being directed by replacement director Joe Johnston.

Entertainment Weekly has our first look at Benicio Del Toro made up as the Wolfman. And these aren’t some grainy, candid shots, either, it’s actually Del Toro in full wolf make-up. Very nice, too, I might add. The film, now directed by Joe Johnston after original director Mark Romanek quit due to “creative differences”, will be based on a script by Andrew Kevin Walker (”Seven”), with a re-write by David Self (”Road to Perdition”), who is also scheduled to write both the big screen movie versions of “Captain America” and “Deathlok”.
Upon his return to his ancestral homeland, an American man (Del Toro) is bitten, and subsequently cursed by, a werewolf.

Benicio Del Toro’s “The Wolfman” may have lost its original director (since replaced by Joe Johnston), but it’s gained a big time name among the fanboys in Hugo Weaving, who has joined the cast to play a cop on Del Toro’s hairy tail. The “Matrix” and “V for Vendetta” star joins a cast that already includes Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, and Emily Blunt.
More:
Weaving, best known for his appearances in “The Matrix” movies, will play Det. Aberline. Del Toro will play the hirsute title character and Anthony Hopkins his dad. Blunt has been cast as the female lead in the project, which Joe Johnston will direct.
Johnston and company will start shooting in London next month off a script by David Self, who rewrote the original screenwriter, “Seven’s” Andrew Kevin Walker.

Breathe easy, fanboys. According to the sewer dwellers at CHUD, “Jurassic Park 3″ director Joe Johnston has snatched the directing gig for “The Wolf Man” away from the much-maligned Brett Ratner, although I’m sure most of you were probably hoping for Frank Darabont. Or actually, most of you probably got what you wanted — anyone but Ratner. Am I right or am I right?
More:
But Joe Johnston – who’s both friendly with Universal and the studio’s most famous occupant (Spielberg) – landed the gig, and this could be a blessing. On one hand, you want a point-and-shoot guy to capture what Mark Romanek deserted; on the other, you don’t want a dipshit who’ll coarsen the material with a lack of affection for the classic monster material.
Johnston seems to be a slow worker, with only two films to his credit since 2001 — “Jurassic Park 3″ in 2001 and “Hidalgo” in 2004. At this rate, you could expect “The Wolf [...]

Mark Romanek may not want to have anything to do with the upcoming Universal horror project “The Wolf Man”, but other directors are not so shy. Brett Ratner, Frank Darabont, James Mangold, and Joe Johnston have either all met, or are expected to meet with Universal to direct the project, says The Hollywood Reporter.
More:
The biggest challenge the studio faces is its inability to work on the script because of the writers strike. Any filmmaker coming on board takes on a locked script, overseen by Romanek over several years, and many directors want to put their stamp on it. Martin Campbell is one helmer who was interested, but he is no longer in contention.
Another potential wrinkle is star Benicio Del Toro. The actor, known to be choosy with parts and directors, might have a say in the process.
At the moment, fan-favorite (just kidding boys) Brett Ratner is the frontrunner.

There is only one other person in Hollywood more disliked by the geeks than Paul W.S. Anderson (not to be confused with Paul Thomas Anderson), and that person is … Brett Ratner. Hey, I don’t understand the dislike, either, as Ratner has done some decent movies in the past. Now comes word that Ratner has been selected by the studio to direct “The Wolf Man”, replacing Mark Romanek, who recently left the project.
More:
I can’t conceive of the problems you must have felt were in place to see Mark Romanek leave THE WOLFMAN. That you were set to start shooting in 3 weeks… it’s truly a nightmare situation. The artwork that Rick Baker created under Mark’s watchful eye is literally stunning. And I know looking at the boards and the make up and the pre-vis that Mark set up – you’re looking for a shooter to step in and just deliver the movie that Mark conceived on the schedule you need [...]

The “Wolf Man” remake has just lost its director. News from The Hollywood Reporter is that director Mark Romanek has walked off the horror project, citing the ever popular “creative differences”, though the trade didn’t say with who Romanek had the “differences” with — stars Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins or, more likely, the studio/producers.
More:
Romanek’s departure harkens back to another troubled Universal production, “State of Play,” which lost stars Brad Pitt and Ed Norton weeks before shooting, only to be reborn like a phoenix from the ashes with a pair of new stars, Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck.
The studio is currently on the hunt for its phoenix director.
With Del Toro and Hopkins onboard, I’m sure the studio won’t have a whole lot of trouble finding a director who’ll want to work with them.

After seeing this picture of actor Benicio Del Toro hamming it up as “the wolf man” (sans make-up, apparently), you have to ask yourself: Who needs make-up? This guy LOOKS wolfy enough as is! But I guess it’s just not enough, which is why Rick Baker will be supplying the fake fur and teeth when Benicio Del Toro suits up to play the wolfman in Mark Romanek’s upcoming “The Wolf Man” movie. (Wait, is that “Wolf Man” or “Wolfman”?) And just because they’re goofing it up in the picture below doesn’t mean “The Wolf Man” is going to be camp. How could it, with Romanek (”One Hour Photo”) directing and Andrew Kevin Walker (”Seven”) scripting?
The image below is via AICN. They also post a message from director Mark Romanek:
This was taken about three months ago — Our first meeting with the three of us.
This pose was a jokey homage to the classic Universal Wolfman/Famous Monsters Magazine-era style, but seeing Benicio [...]
