I don’t read nearly enough “Thor” comic books to know who these Warriors Three guys are, or if they’re all that important to the large scope of a Thor movie, but the trades apparently think they’re big enough of a deal to report on their casting. And so, here is the casting news: Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, and Tadanobu Asano have been cast to play the Warrior’s Three, described as “a trio of Asgardian adventurers” named Fandral, Hogun and Volstagg who make it their business to fight alongside the movie’s hero, Asgard hero Thor.
That’s a pretty interesting selection of actors there. Ray Stevenson is no stranger to Marvel Comics, having recently played The Punisher in the poorly received (though I loved it) “Punisher: War Zone”. He’ll next be seen in the Denzel Washington post-apocalyptic actioner “Book of Eli”.
Stuart Townsend boasts plenty of genre credits himself, including the recent remake of “Night Stalker” on TV.
And of course, any self-respecting [...]

Surprise? Don’t be. “Thor” is being directed by Kenneth Branagh, after all. Once Marvel Studios hired on the Shakespeare man, it was pretty much “anything goes” when it comes to the studio’s Asgard product. According to the trades, Hannibal Lecter himself has all but signed on to play Thor’s daddy Odin in the upcoming “Thor” movie, set to shoot early next year.
“Thor” will follow the titular god of thunder (to be played by “Star Trek’s” Chris Hemsworth), a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war. As punishment for his misdeed, Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans, so that he may learn to temper that “I’m the God of Thunder, hear me roar!” attitude of his. Once among mortal men, our hero learns what it takes to be a true hero, thanks to the love of human woman Jane Foster (to be played by Natalie Portman). Just in time, too, because [...]

Stan Lee has become the Where’s Waldo of cameos. It’s a kind of past-time just to identify him in each new Marvel movie. As long as filming is being done within pragmatic reach, Stan Lee tells Collider (he’s still very busy at 86), he’s inclined to do one. In the past he has been discreet, playing either an innocent bystander or a mailman, but in Iron Man 2 he’s being thrust into the spotlight as a “Larry King-type”. Usually they would just get Larry King to do a Larry King impression, but Stan Lee must be the closest approximation; he even has that coarse, embittered voice. All he has to do is don the suspenders and shot-glass-rim glasses like Superman dons his cape. Besides Iron Man 2, he also talks about a potential cameo in Thor. You can watch the entire interview below.

Here’s the deal with these “as told to us by a guy from abroad” news — they almost always turn out to be false. Besides the fact that the “news” is second hand (some guy read it in a newspaper or saw it on TV), the original source was in a foreign language, and you know how wacky them foreigners and their foreign tongues are. In this case, someone supposedly read an interview German actor Matthias Schweighöfer (left) did with the German edition of GQ, where Schweighöfer mentions that he was not only up for a role in Kenneth Branagh’s “Thor”, but that Jude Law and Robert De Niro have already joined the cast.
So how do you confirm something like that? Well, you could find someone who is German, who lives in Germany, and ask him to go buy an issue of GQ and read the article in question and then translate it for you to either confirm or [...]

And yes, you can forget about that rumor that had Jessica Biel playing Asgardian babe warrior Sif, even though watching Biel flexing those perfect abs with a sword in her hands would have been so much more preferable than watching her chase Faceman and his pals. But oh well. Instead, THR reports that the role has gone to Kyle XY’s Jaimie Alexander (below). Okay, Alexander ain’t bad, but come on, we couldn’t get Diora Baird for this?
Meanwhile, the trade also reports that ineffectual 24 First Husband Colm Feore (top left) will be playing a mysterious villain in the movie. For some reason, the studio is keeping the role a big secret, and hasn’t bothered to send the finished script to any of the actors for fear they might, you know, tweet about it or something. Actors are doing that a lot lately. In any case, doesn’t Feore just looks like he was born to play villains? Genre fans may remember [...]

Chances are model turned actress Diora Baird won’t get a role in Marvel Studio’s upcoming “Thor”, but even if she did land one, it wouldn’t be a big enough role to warrant a credit in the title sequences. Or maybe she’ll end up on the cutting room floor, as she did in the recent “Star Trek”. Of course, that won’t stop Diora Baird’s managers and agents (or “peeps”, as the kids call them) from selling her to the lad’s mags as “the hot chick from the Thor movie”, which is definitely not a bad thing because, duh, Diora Baird is kinda hot.
So what’s the point in typing all of the above? Well the underground dwelling boyos at CHUD uncovered a tweet by the model-actress saying she had recently gone in for a “Thor” addition, though when prodded for more info, she wouldn’t say what the role was.
But since Natalie Portman has already nabbed the leading lady role of nurse [...]

Natalie Portman has joined the cast of Thor, and will be playing the role of Jane Foster, a mortal nurse who falls in love (and vice versa) with the God of Thunder in the comics. According to Marvel, the role will be “updated” for the film, so she’ll probably end up a tough as nails cop or crusading ACLU lawyer or something of equal grrrrl power, one presumes. Also, Marvel gave us a more detailed (or at least, more than we’ve seen so far) description of the plot. It goes something like this:
Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of super hero: “Thor.” This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, [...]

Maybe. The current rumor has Jessica Biel circling a role in Marvel Studio’s “Thor”. According to the boys over at NukeTheFridge, a source “from deep within” has told them that Jessica Biel is currently in negotiations to play Thor’s love interest in Kenneth Branagh’s big-budget live-action version of Marvel’s Thunder God. The last time we heard about a love interest for Thor, it involved a ridiculous rumor that had Natalie Portman in the role.
Why is that ridiculous? Well, we’ve been told that the “Thor” movie will take place almost completely in Asgard, which would mean the skinny and petite Portman would have to play an Asgardian warrior. No dice there, chief. Jessica Biel, on the other hand, could definitely fill out an Asgard battle armor something fierce, and she certainly knows how to fight. (”Blade: Trinity”, anyone?)
NukeTheFridge speculates that if their source is on the money, it would mean Biel will be playing either The Enchantress or Sif. Most [...]

This morning there were about a half dozen different articles on the movie blogs focused on the same UGO article. Alas, that particular article has since been pulled. My guess is that UGO jumped the gun on the report, and Marvel has (probably not very) kindly asked them to take it down. It happens all the time in this universe we call the movie news trade. But luckily for us, they did publish the article, and a couple of other blogs were quick enough to pick up the contents before it was removed. This is the Internet, after all. Once it’s out, it’s out, boys.
Combined info from Slashfilm and Filmonic, both quoting Marvel’s headman himself, Kevin Feige:
“The Avengers”: Feige would like to see the Hulk show up, possibly as the movie’s central villain (or antagonist) that spurs the creation of the Avengers to face the threat. And since he signs the checks, I’m going to guess he’ll get his wish. [...]

Here are some very early looks at teaser posters for a slew of Marvel’s Avengers-related movies (”Thor”, “The Avengers”, “The First Avenger: Captain America”, and “Iron Man 2″), as well as an animated poster for Edgar Wright’s “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” shown at this year’s Licensing Show in Las Vegas. No doubt these, especially the Marvel ones, aren’t anything you’ll see in the full-fledged posters, and if anything were probably thrown together just to promote the property at the event. Still, they kind of (though not in any real meaningful way) give you an idea of what Marvel is thinking when it comes to the properties.

I was never really all that interested in the God stuff in comic books, to be honest with you, so Thor was always on the peripheral during my comic book reading days, some guy with a hammer who showed up to speak in a funny accent whenever Captain America or Iron Man got into a jam. He never did much for me. But thankfully, the guys over at Marvel seems to understand what makes the guy tick and how to make a good movie out of it, and they’ve hired a writer who seems to know even more.
The blokes over at CineFOOLS (no jokes, please) cornered “Thor” writer Ashley Miller, and threw him some questions:

Harnett has that sneaky look about him, or maybe it’s just those beady eyes of his. Either way, I thought then that he would have made a pretty good Loki (not too muscular, and tall and skinny, just as Loki the trickster should be), and considering that a 20-something has just been cast as Thor, Harnett would have made a great evil half-brother. Alas, according to Nikki Finke, who broke the Thor casting before the official announcement, it’s not Harnett, but a British actor name Tom Hiddleston (pictured, left) that has nabbed the role.
Finke via Deadline Hollywood couldn’t get Marvel to confirm the casting, but she was right once already, so it’s a good bet she’s right again. A little bit about Hiddleston:

Whoever said that didn’t hear that Marvel Studios and Kenneth Branagh have just cast their lead in their big-budget comic book epic “Thor”. According to Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood, who broke the story, it’s the same guy who has nabbed the lead in the upcoming “Red Dawn” remake earlier in the week. Who is the lucky devil, you ask? His name is Chris Hemsworth, and he’s an Australian actor.
The name might not ring any bells, but if you saw Abrams’ “Star Trek” (and who didn’t?), he had a big role in the first 10 minutes. Chris Hemsworth played George Kirk, James T. Kirk’s dad, who fought off Nero’s big bad ship at the beginning of “Star Trek”, sacrificing himself so his son could be born. Hemsworth is a former player on the long-running Aussie show Home and Away, which has spawned a number of Hollywood actors, [...]

Natalie Portman holds a special place in the hearts of geeks. Or at least I’ve been told. I don’t really get it myself. Maybe it’s because she was once in Luc Besson’s “Leon” (aka “The Professional”) or … something. Anyways, they just seem to really like her, which should make some of them happy because there are rumors that Portman is up for the female lead in Kenneth Branagh’s “Thor” movie.
The news comes from Deadline Hollywood, who breaks down the contenders to play Thor:
Charlie Hunnam (the British co-star of the F/X series Sons Of Anarchy); Tom Hiddleston (award-winning British actor and RADA graduate who played Winston Churchill’s son in HBO’s The Gathering Storm), Alexandar Skarsgard (Stellan’s son who has appeared in the HBO Iraq War miniseries Generation Kill and vampire drama True Blood, and who’s definitely visually right for the role), Liam Hemsworth (offered a significant role in The Expendables after Sly Stallone saw his tape), and Joel Kinnaman (some [...]

If Marvel and Jon Favreau have their way, Favreau will be finishing up another blockbuster “Iron Man” movie and moving right into production on the “Avengers” movie. This would also explain why “The Avengers” has been moved back a year — not only to get the finances together, but also to allow Favreau time to rest up before heading into what is sure to be a mega budgeted and stressful gig. Or at least, that’s the comic book movie news of the day.
A spy sent the news to AICN:
Avengers is delayed a year because of financing issues but also because the plan is for Favreau to helm it. Everybody here loves the guy and he wants to do it, but it would have been impossible for him to do before the date change given his Iron Man 2 commitments. Also partly the reason why he agreed to do the Stark sequel on such an accelerated schedule was so he could [...]

Well we sort of knew it had to happen. Let’s face it, Marvel’s initial idea of releasing both “Captain America” and “The Avengers” in the same year a few months part was way too optimistic. Today, the studio has revised their release schedule, and now instead of “The First Avenger: Captain America” and “The Avengers” hitting theaters in 2011 two months apart, Captain America will land first in 2011, while the Avengers will have to wait until 2012 to assemble.
In Thunder God news, “Thor” has also been delayed, moving from its original July 16, 2010 date to June 17, 2011. “Iron Man 2″, originally the companion superhero film for “Thor”, remains in its original May 7, 2010. I guess Marvel knows a hot item when they see it, and sees no reason to mess around with ol Shellhead’s dates. Now instead of “Iron Man 2″ and “Thor”, it’ll be “The First Avenger: Captain America” and “Thor” at the multiplexes in [...]

On the heels of yesterday’s news that the unknown Alexander Skarsgard may be the frontrunner to play the lead in Kenneth Branagh’s “Thor”, comes this IESB story positing Josh Harnett as the comic book film’s villain, the trickster Loki, Thor’s half-brother and one evil sonofabitch. According to the site, Branagah has met with Harnett for the role and the actor is now on his short list.
Via IESB:
Who does Brannagh want to bring this evil character to life? Try Josh Hartnett. IESB sources say Hartnett has met with Brannagh as well and he is currently on a very short list to play the villain in the film.
Word is Josh and his camp are really interested because he has never played a villain before and after Heath Ledger’s Oscar win for the latest comic book villain, Hartnett is intrigued by the character.
If Skarsgard does end up getting the role, Harnett as Loki would be a nice fit. They sort of look like [...]

Has Shakespearean guy Kenneth Branagh found the perfect actor to play his 20-something Thor? Maybe, maybe not. But it sure looks like a perfect fit, doesn’t it? The actor in question is one Alexander Skarsgard, son of Stellan, who you might remember as the villain in pretty much every movie you see him in. Alexander Skarsgard is 6′ 4″ and has the perfect blond Swedish complexion that would fit Thor to a “T”.
News of Skarsgard as a possible Thor candidate comes from Latino Reviews, who was sent an email by a scooper telling him about a restaurant meeting between Skarsgard and Branagh. LR goes on to opine:
I heard rumblings around town with some of my pals about this guy, but until now I didn’t have anything concrete to go on and chalked it up to mere fanboy speculation on forums. Unfortunately, I never seen an episode of Generation Kill nor True Blood but the guy does seem to fit the [...]

It may be losing castmembers like the Titanic losing passengers post-iceberg, but that’s not gonna stop Marvel from moving ahead with “Iron Man 2″, as the studio has announced that principal photography on the sequel will commence in early April, with returning stars Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow. Don Cheadle will be replacing Terrence Howard and Jon Favreau returns to direct. Look for “Iron Man 2″ to hit the sauce in 2010.
Meanwhile, Marvel.com also officially announced that Kenneth Branagh’s take on “Thor” will hit theaters in 2010. July 16, 2010, to be exact. Just how successful it will be is open to debate. Really? Kenneth Branagh directing a comic book movie about a big guy who wields a magical hammer? I don’t know about the logic behind that one. Didn’t they try the Branagh experiment once already with Ang Lee’s “Hulk”? I’m just saying.
Anyways, in other “Iron Man 2″ news, casting sheets for a hot brunette and a Mongolian [...]

Still trying to wrap your head around the idea that Marvel Studios has tapped Shakespearean guy Kenneth Branagh to direct their “Thor” movie? Well get over it, because it’s happening. So what’s next, but to speculate on who will play Thor? A lot of names have already been tossed around, some more credible than others, but according to this casting sheet, Marvel is looking for a Thor that is in his mid to late ’20s.
Corona Coming Attractions got their hands on this little casting flyer:
Male MUST BE MID-LATE 20′S and SIX FEET OR TALLER. LEAD.
Physically powerful, very handsome, occasionally egotistical, petulant, and wild. A natural warrior with a quick charming wit who must be genuinely and severly (sp) humbled before becoming the compassionate, mature her of our film.
Not saying the above is true, but if it is, then it’s likely Marvel is looking for a newcomer to play the Norse God of Thunder, and not any of the established names [...]
