With John Woo’s mighty “Red Cliff” having been in production for an age before finally storming into Chinese cinemas, it was always inevitable that a number of other films would attempt to steal a little of its thunder, or at least to cash in on its inevitable success. The highest profile and arguably the most promising of these is “Three Kingdoms: Resurrection Of The Dragon”, from Hong Kong director Daniel Lee (who despite having recently slipped up with “Dragon Squad, has a solid track record with the likes of “A Fighter’s Blues” and “Black Mask”), which also draws upon the rich drama of the Three Kingdoms era of Chinese history, and which actually beat its rival to screens by some time, quite nicely filling the gap following Peter Chan’s excellent costume epic “Warlords”. The film boasts an impressive cast including megastar Andy Lau, continuing his run of Mandarin-language period pieces, the legendary Sammo Hung, and the internationally popular Maggie Q, [...]

Daniel Lee’s “Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon” is the second of the big-budget Chinese epics that I’ve seen, including the very underwhelming “An Empress and the Warriors”. It is also the first of two movies based on the epic Chinese novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” by Luo Guanzhong. There are two other Chinese epics that I have yet to see — “The Warlords”, which came out in late 2007, and the other “Three Kingdoms” movie, John Woo’s forthcoming “Red Cliff”. I plan to catch up on “The Warlords” (which co-stars Andy Lau, the star of “Resurrection of the Dragon”) as soon as possible, and it goes without saying that Woo’s “Red Cliff”, his return to Chinese cinema, is a must see.
“Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon” is set in China, 228 A.D., during a time of great warfare, with the country divided into three kingdoms — Wei, Shu, and Wu. The film’s hero, Zhao Zilong (Andy Lau) [...]

The Maggie Q. and Andy Lau Chinese epic “Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon” finally gets a trailer and an official site. You can head over to Sina.com now to catch the trailer (I’ll update this blog with a YouTube version when one becomes available), and the official site can be found here. The trailer looks good, a little small, and the resolution is crap, but you can seen enough to know that Maggie Q. is totally badass in it, while Andy Lau looks a little, well, wimpy. The official site, on the other hand, well, it’s just there.
Based on “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” a vast 600-year-old novel by Luo Guangzhong that ranks as one of China’s four most important pieces of literature, and also provided source material for John Woo’s upcoming Battle of Red Cliff.
Starring Maggie Q., Andy Lau, Sammo Hung, and directed by Daniel Lee.

Via Twitchfilm, Chinese site Sina has got some promotional stills and another poster for the upcoming Andy Lau/Maggie Q. epic actioner “Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon”. There might be more than just the images I have below, but since the entire site is in Chinese, and Chinese font looks like asterisk on my computer — well, you know, I give up easily. Previous behind-the-scenes photos from the filming of the movie can be found here and here.
As the title indicates, the film is set in the Three Kingdoms period, immortalized in a classic work of historical fiction. The young Zhao Ziling (Andy Lau) goes to war against Cao Cao, a cunning politician and military strategist. Finally, Cao Cao’s forces are sent into retreat, but the battles between feuding warlords continue for sixty years. Zhao Ziling, now an old man, must finally take to the field against Cao’s warrior grand-daughter, Cao Ying (Maggie Q.).
