Critics (the kind that gets paid for it, and the kind that don’t) may not have liked it very much, but the American public couldn’t give a damn, as they flocked to the theaters in droves to make Will Smith’s “Hancock” king of the box office, proving yet again that the indomitable charm of Will Smith can overcome anything, even a film that nearly every mainstream movie critic has panned. How bad were the reviews? RottenTomatoes has the film at a 37% freshness rating as of this writing. That’s pretty bad, kids. How bad? That kind of rating is usually reserved only for movies starring Paris Hilton or Madonna. That bad.
Moviegoers were unfazed, however, as “Hancock” collected a nice chunk of change over the long July 4th week, taking in $107 million since opening on Wednesday and including studio estimates through Sunday. The Peter Berg superhero movie, budgeted at $150 million, easily outperformed its closest competitor, the Pixar animation “Wall-E”, [...]

Talk about a bad rep. No, not Hancock the drunken superhero’s – I’m talking about “Hancock” the movie. Peter Berg’s drunken superhero movie hasn’t exactly been embraced by movie reviewers on or off-line, and the main bone of contention seems to be its haphazardly written and executed Plot Twist, which occurs about halfway into the film and besides catching everyone off guard, makes little to no sense in the grand scheme of things. In said Plot Twist, a character reveals a secret that changes everything. Alas, it’s not exactly for the better, as the revelation is a bit, let’s say, kinda stupid, not to mention turning what could have potentially been a great superhero movie into a Saturday morning cartoon show. And not the good kind of Saturday morning cartoon shows, either; we’re talking Saturday morning cartoon shows from the ‘70s and early ‘80s here, folks, and we all remember how dastardly awful those were.
“Hancock” stars Will Smith as the [...]

Studios like an actor who is a “sure thing,” and Will Smith is one of those. He’s an extremely bankable superstar who is seemingly loved by all age groups and ethnicities, because he’s likable. Look at his top four grossing films, ranked in order from highest to lowest, “Independence Day,” “I Am Legend,” “Men in Black,” and “Men in Black II,” and you will see that, with one exception, his biggest successes have come from his ability to bring comic relief to an action film. And if you’ve seen the trailer for his latest film, “Hancock,” it looks like that formula continues. But does it?
John Hancock is a boozing, foul tempered, easily angered guy who just doesn’t give a shit. In the beginning of the film, he’s drunk, spread out on a bus stop bench, when a young boy approaches him and points to a TV. “Bad guys,” the kid says. “What, you want a cookie? Get the hell out [...]

Peter Berg’s upcoming “Hancock” is the only comic book superhero movie not based on an actual comic book, and from all the advance reviews we’ve read on the movie, the film has an apparently very spectacular blah Third Act, i.e. the final 20-30 minutes of the film goes so far off the track that many reviewers don’t know quite what to make of it. At the time of this writing, the movie has a staggeringly low 29% Fresh rating (i.e. positive reviews) on RottenTomatoes, which is, as you might imagine, not so good for a movie starring Will Smith, Jason Bateman, Charlize Theron, and directed by Peter Berg set to open tomorrow.
Some quick hits:
Kenneth Turan of the L.A. Times scratched his head at the movie’s oft-mentioned weird turn of events later in the film:
But then, just about without warning, “Hancock” makes a completely unexpected and head-shaking plot turn that derails the film in a way that it never recovers from. [...]

I don’t care what anyone says, or how many bad reviews come out of the film’s advance screenings, I’m still looking forward to Peter Berg’s “Hancock”. Will Smith + superhero + Summer. How could you go wrong with that? Okay, so there was “Wild Wild West”, and in retrospect, “Independence Day” was kinda sucky, too. In fact, I don’t think Smith has actually made a Summer movie that will be considered classics 20 years from now, unless you count “Men in Black” or, um, “The Legend of Bagger Vance”?
Well look, the point is, I still think “Hancock” will be good. If not great, then good, decent entertainment. Or at least a good enough excuse to get out of the heat. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Here are some clips from the movie that have been released so far. Some of these have already been posted on the site, but I thought I’d gather them into one place. [...]

Haven’t gotten tired of the drunken superhero turned reformed superhero yet? Well here’s another clip from Peter Berg’s upcoming movie, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies. It’s an extended clip of that scene in the trailer where a reformed Hancock tells a wounded policewoman that he’s there to help her, but that it’s not sexual, and asks for her permission to touch her in order to save her. Great stuff.
Starring Will Smith, Jason Bateman, Eddie Marsan and Charlize Theron, and directed by Peter Berg.
Hancock comes to the rescue July 2nd, 2008.

So what’s the deal with Hancock, the star of Peter Berg’s superhero movie “Hancock”? What happened to him? How did he end up a drunk? Was he always a superhero? Well, if you’ve been reading the site, then you probably know all the answers to that, including enough spoilers to make you really want to see this movie, or really not, depending on your point of view. Here’s a quick clip of Hancock (played by Will Smith) explaining his origin to Jason Bateman’s character in a restaurant.
A hard-living superhero who has fallen out of favor with the public enters into a questionable relationship with the wife of the public relations professional who’s trying to repair his image.
Clip originally from the Ellen DeGeneres TV show. Notice Charlize Theron’s character reacting to the story. If you’ve read the spoilers for the movie, you’ll know why.

As part of their MTV Movie Awards showcase, MTV has put up new clips for “Wanted”, “Hancock”, and “Twilight” that you probably saw on TV if you were watching the MTV Movie Awards today. What, you weren’t watching? Shame on you. (Plus, it means you have good taste in TV channels, but I digress.) The clip from “Twilight” features a vampire chasing the female lead, when the male lead (who is also a vampire) appears to help out; “Wanted” has Angelina Jolie doing her thing on the hood of a car, and more bullet “curving” action; while “Hancock” features that funny moment when Hancock lands in Jason Bateman’s suburban neighborhood and encounters some unruly kids.

Uh oh. I smell trouble. When a movie like “Hancock”, which costs untold millions to make, has to come out of its slumber to reshoot something for 12-hours with the star of the movie present and in character, it’s pretty easy to think that something is wrong in the land of “Hancock”. Or at least, there is a perceived “wrongness” that the studio and the cast/crew felt needed to be “fixed”, or perhaps, added to.
Slashfilm has the breakdown on the “Hancock” reshoot:
That’s because the photo was taken on Saturday night… [cue inquisitive music] That’s right folks, the film did reshoots on Saturday night in Times Square. Apparently they shot for 12 hours and got some last minute footage they needed for the movie which hits theaters in seven weeks.
The last time Will Smith had to do reshoots for one of his movies, it was for that awful ending for “I am Legend”. And although the trailers for “Hancock” have [...]

It’s hard to believe that Peter Berg’s “Hancock” didn’t start out life as a comic book, because it has the potential of being the best comic book movie of the summer. Okay, so maybe it’s got its work cut out for it, in a Summer full of big-time comic book movies like some guy in a bat costume and some fellow in a red suit of armor. Still, I don’t know who is cutting these trailers for “Hancock”, but every subsequent trailer I’ve seen for the film just keeps getting better and better, including this one. Here’s the latest, which comes with some brand spanking new images.
Also, is it just me, or does this latest trailer show more of Charlize Theron? As anyone who has read spoilers for the movie knows, Charlize ends up being a very, VERY big part of the movie. And Hancock’s life, as it turns out.

I don’t care what all the advance screening reviews have said, Peter Berg’s “Hancock” is still right up there on my list of “Most Wanted” movies to see in the Summer. How could the combination of funny-heroic Will Smith, a smoking hot Charlize Theron, and Peter Berg behind the camera be anything but great? Or at the very least, pretty damn good? I’m sure the film has plenty of problems, but after seeing this latest trailer from the movie, I’m once again excited to see this thing.
This clip was shown after last night’s American Idol elimination show, and is being billed as the official movie trailer for the Summer Event film. I haven’t been watching American Idol for the last two weeks, so I missed it. Thank God for the Internet.
“Hancock” tears it up July 2, 2008.

Okay, so maybe that advance screening held for “Hancock” a few days ago didn’t go so well (most of the reviews panned it), but that still won’t damper my enthusiasm for it. You put Peter Berg with a comic book storyline (though not based on a comic, ironically), and then add a dose of Will Smith charm, and how could this thing not be spectacular? Or at least, decent? Will Smith hasn’t done anything that wasn’t at least decent since The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and the disaster that was “Wild Wild West”, and after seeing these new images from the movie, I still kinda want to see this. All new images for “Hancock” after the jump.

That seems to be the opinion of a fellow in Texas (Plano, Texas, to be exact), who got sent an invitation to see the first-ever screening of “Hancock” (aka the only superhero movie this summer that isn’t based on a comic book), which is directed by Peter Berg (who was on hand at the screening) and stars Will Smith and Charlize Theron. AICN has got your scoop on the first-ever review for the film’s first-ever screening, and the word is … great first half, not so much second? Beware: There are MAJOR SPOILERS below.
More:
Here is a summary of what I’m about to say in this review for those wanting to avoid spoilers:
Hancock is a severely uneven film. The first half is an amazing action comedy with some big laughs, great set pieces, and slick production value (even in its current state of incompletion), but by the second half the damn thing falls [...]

Despite the fact that we’ve only seen Hancock, Will Smith’s drunken superhero character in Peter Berg’s “Hancock”, sporting a dirty knit cap and booze in a paper bag via the trailers, that doesn’t mean we won’t see Hancock in more superheroic looking form in the movie. Will Smith in X-Men-esque uniforms below!
“Hancock”, starring Will Smith, Charlize Theron, and Jason Bateman, and directed by Peter Berg, opens July 2nd, just in time for the July 4th weekend.

The tagline for Will Smith’s drunken superhero movie reads: “There are heroes. There are superheroes. And then there’s…Hancock.” And after having seen the trailer (here if you missed it), I’m warming to the idea of the title being “Hancock” instead of the original title of “Tonight He Comes”, which gives the idea this is a serious movie, which it’s not. Anyhoo, poster for the film below.
A hard-living superhero (Smith) who has fallen out of favor with the public enters into a questionable relationship with the wife (Theron) of the public relations professional (Bateman) who’s trying to repair his image.

I’ve been railing about the name change to the Will Smith superhero movie “Tonight, He Comes” for a while now, but after seeing the trailer — yeah, I’m gonna have to agree with it. Calling this movie “Tonight, He Comes” wouldn’t be correct, because this is goofy camp fun from beginning to end. Anyhoo, here is your first look at the trailer for “Hancock”, starring Will Smith as a drunken, homeless superhero trying to reform his public image.

Okay, now color me officially piqued now. I have been more than a little underwhelmed by all the things I’m seeing and hearing from Peter Berg’s “John Hancock” (aka “Tonight He Comes”), but after seeing this picture (below), I think my interest has just perked up again. Apparently Charlize Theron’s character in the movie is more than a housewife who Will Smith’s superhero falls for. She’s much, MUCH more. Head on below to see what I’m talking about. I won’t tell you here in case this is some kind of BIG SPOILER that the film is trying to hide, and you’re one of those people who don’t want to know.
Via SuperheroHype:

Wow, right? I didn’t see THAT coming.
Check out more of the set pics from the same day here.

The latest batch of pics to show up on the net from the (apparently very unguarded) set of “John Hancock” (formerly known as “Tonight He Comes”) comes to you courtesy of SuperheroHype and shows two things: They’re really going to trash the city for real, and Charlize Theron is really going to look good in this movie. Although I still don’t think the cast and crew have any idea what kind of movie they’re doing, and nothing I’ve seen or read has convinced me otherwise, nevertheless this looks like it could be a decent entry in the superhero genre. And if not, well, then Charlize Theron is still looking pretty damn good in it.
“John Hancock” stars Will Smith as a has-been alcoholic superhero who hires a PR expert to help fix his image with the public; the superhero then ends up falling for the PR guy’s wife, played by Charlize Theron. And after seeing these pictures, can you really [...]

I’ve been a little worried about the upcoming Will Smith superhero movie “John Hancock” (formerly known as “Tonight He Comes”, but apparently even “Hancock” is not the final title for the movie), mostly because from everything I’ve seen of it, including behind-the-scenes images, seem to indicate that the filmmakers are going for a parody of the superhero genre. I mean, come on, the film is about an alcoholic superhero who is trying to reform his image with the public by hiring an image consultant played by Jason Bateman. The superhero then falls for the PR guy’s hot wife, played by Charlize Theron. That’s not exactly the makings of a serious superhero movie there, kids.
Recently the cast and crew sat down to talk with MTV about the movie, probably because the film has been sliding under the radar for a while now, and even half-finished, I don’t think it’s getting all that much traction at all with the public (aka the [...]
