Is it just me being an extremely negative nilly or were there quite a few very bad movies released theatrically in 2009? I know every year has its own set of sweaty swine balls, but the previous twelve months seemed overloaded with absolute stinkers. If you’re curious to know which offended the collective palate more than others, you’ll be pleased to know that The Golden Raspberry Foundation has released their list of contenders for the year’s worst. No surprises, really, though I’m crossing my fingers that Stephen Sommers’ shockingly stupid actioner “G.I. Joe” snags the Razzie for Worst Picture of 2009. And while I can thoroughly understand why Megan Fox got the nod for “Transformers 2,” I honestly thought she was great in “Jennifer’s Body.” Go figure.

Regardless of whether or not you agree with the shady practice of downloading pirated movies, torrent sites are probably here to stay. Unless the industry gets its proverbial fecal matter together within the next few years, people aren’t going to buy the cinematic cow when its celluloid milk can be streamed easily from a surprisingly large number of popular websites. According to TorrentFreak, the website which devotes its entire bandwidth to the trends of savvy downloaders across the globe, the following films are the most pirated features of 2009. The list is, for the most part, fairly predictable, though there are a few unexpected contenders sprinkled throughout. Who knew people were that anxious to watch “State of Play?” The mind boggles.
In case you were wondering, here’s how the list was calculated:
The data for this list is collected by TorrentFreak from several sources, including reports from all the large BitTorrent trackers. All release formats, including cammed versions are counted. Afterward, the [...]

Interesting happenings at the box office over the weekend, as although Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Bruno” took the top spot as expected, it doesn’t appear as if the movie, which scored $30.4 million (according to studio estimates) will have legs. Although the mockumentary, about a gay Austrian fashion designer who comes to America and does gay stuff to make people uncomfortable for laughs, easily topped the debut weekend of its predecessor “Borat’s” $26.5 million, it had the advantage of being screened in three times the number of theaters as the 2006 movie, which went on to make $128.5 million in the States.
Another chink in “Bruno’s” armor is that the film scored big on Friday ($14.4 million), but fell off on Saturday and Sunday ($8.8 million and $7.2 million, respectively). Usually when a movie does well on Fridays, it usually continues the momentum into Saturdays, the biggest moviegoing day of the week. The fact that “Bruno” dropped off is not a good [...]

Well this is a first: according to studio estimates (and I can’t stress that enough, studio estimates, which means they could and will probably change when actual numbers come in on Monday), the battle of the CG movies ended in a tie over the weekend. “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”, the third in the franchise, scored the same $42.5 million in its first 3-day weekend as did “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” in its second week. Again, these are preliminary, studio estimates. One of these movies will come out on top (albeit by a very small margin) come Monday. Until then, it looks like people couldn’t decide whether to watch CG robots or CG animals over the weekend, so did both in equal measure. Keep in mind, though, that “Ice Age” opened earlier in the week, adding an extra $25 million to its coffers and giving it a final total of $67.5 million for the entire week.
The news is [...]

Charges of racist robots notwithstanding, Michael Bay blew up the box office in his usual manner — outrageously and excessively. Over a five-day span, Bay’s “Transformers” sequel took in a whopping $201.2 million according to studio estimates, just two million short of the $203.8 million record currently held by Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight”, which did similarly lucrative numbers over a 5-day span. No surprise, then, that the robots in disguise left the week’s only studio picture opening opposite it, the Cameron Diaz chick flick “My Sister’s Keeper” in the dust. Of course, I’m sure the people who put out “Keeper” are perfectly thrilled with the film’s $12 million debut, given that it’s a moderately budgeted drama that wouldn’t have too far to go to turn a profit.
“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”, on the other hand, came in with a $200 estimated million dollar budget, and easily paid dividends in its first week. Besides the $201 in the States, the [...]

Try these amusing audition clips, and this one that proves robots can be sleazy, too.
- Also, in the mood for some “Transmorphers”? Yes, I said “Transmorphers”. Er, part two.
- Is James Cameron directing a segment of the animated “Heavy Metal”? Maybe. What is a sure bet is the “Avatar” game.
- Will “Terminator 5″ be set in London and feature a time-traveling John Connor? Possibly. The question is, does anyone still care after “Salvation”?
- The Sci Fi Channel’s Stargate: Universe show has gotten itself a new behind-the-scenes clip. In a word, it’s different. Plus, promos of the show’s cast.

The Fallen, the centerpiece villain of the “Transformers” sequel, is a giant friggin’ robot (I guess that goes without saying, right?) that’s been laying at the bottom of the ocean. (Note: Or not, as I’ve been geekily informed in the comments section.) He’s awakened by a couple of bad Decepticons to help out in their battle with those car-lovin’ Autobots and those pesky human armies from the first movie. Meanwhile, Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) is off to college, while his hot-to-trot girlfriend Mikaela (Megan Fox) is grease monkeying it up something hot. Here’s the latest and greatest trailer for Michael Bay’s “Tranasformers: Revenge of the Fallen”. New Megan Fox pic from the movie included, just ’cause.
Decepticon forces return to Earth on a mission to take Sam Witwicky prisoner, after the young hero learns the truth about the ancient origins of the Transformers. Joining the mission to protect humankind is Optimus Prime, who forms an alliance with international armies for a [...]

It’s always funny when two big-time Hollywood names start going at it in public like little kids at recess. Remember how much joy we got out of that brief (but oh so awesome) feud between Spike Lee and Clint Eastwood? Well they ain’t got nothing on this latest war of words. Whereas Lee and Eastwood were bickering over race relations in America or some such, it took Michael Bay and McG to bring the really big issue facing America today to the forefront. Namely, who has the bigger friggin robot in his movie: Bay with “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”, or McG with “Terminator Salvation”? Now that’s a feud, baby!
So, let’s back track. It started when Michael Bay posted this on his forum, talking about the upcoming slate of Summer movies, and then pointing out a very particular one with very particular robots in it:
Okay it’s time to turn up the heat on Transformers – Revenge of the Fallen. We’ve [...]

I don’t know if that’s the result of Michael Bay’s “Operation Confusion” moving full steam ahead, but it seems unlikely. More remakes of sci-fi classics and not-so-much classics, and “Dune” finally gets moving toward actually happening. Maybe. This, and more, in your condensed version of The Sci-Fi Week That Was.
Platinum Studios Preps Final Orbit Comic for Big Screen – A movie based on a comic book about thrill-seeking pretty people who get trapped on a space station. I say they had it coming.

Like the guys over at Film School Rejects, I’ve always been a fan of Michael Bay, despite all the bitching people usually do about his style over substance, etc etc. The way I see it, you either like the man’s movies, or you don’t go see them. What’s there to complain about? In any case, there’s no doubt that Michael Bay’s “Transformers 2″ is one of the most anticipated movies of 2009, or 2010, or whenever it is finally released, and in response to all the recent rumors about production for the film gearing up, Bay has said some things to some people that have gotten the Interwebs all in a tizzy.
Film School Reject has this about the Bay, in an article intriguingly titled “Michael Bay is Being a Huge Douche About Transformers 2″:
I realized this all today, first when I saw an article over on Slashfilm about Bay’s commitment to secrecy. My good friend Pete referenced a post on [...]

V: The Second Generation as a Movie Franchise? – Kenneth Johnson, the man behind the original “V: The Mini-Series”, is trying to launch a movie franchise based on his novel, “V: The Second Generation”, a sequel to his original works.
Script Review: The Day the Earth Stood Still Remake – Someone has read the script for the Keanu Reeves remake of “The Day the Earth Stood Still” (you know, the one about Global Warming?), and in a word: It blows donkey chunks.

In his non-fiction books about Hollywood (“Adventures in the Screen Trade”, “Further Adventures in the Screen Trade”), prolific screenwriter William Goldman has always lamented the plight of the screenwriter in Hollywood — specifically, that screenwriters are worth less than the caterers on a movie set, and appreciated about the same as the guy who scoops up horse crap. So I’m a little surprise to run across this Hollywood Reporter article talking about how the original writers from the first “Transformers”, along with a third guy, are in negotiations to be paid anywhere from $5 million to $7 million to write the “Transformers” sequel. Wait — they could DO that? Apparently so.
More:
Scribe Ehren Kruger and the writing team of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are in negotiations to team to write the screenplay for DreamWorks/Paramount’s “Transformers 2.”
The teaming of A-listers to write such a huge project might be an industry first and could have been necessary because Kurtzman and Orci — [...]

The latest word on the inevitable Transformers sequel (and yes, I’m dying to see a sequel to this one, because I just love giant f*cking robots kicking the living tar out of each other, so sue me) is that it’s being scheduled for Summer 2009. The word comes from Paramount Pictures themselves. Or at least that’s what ComingSoon, citing Box Office Mojo, says. And why not? Two years is just about enough time to make the sequel. Get the script done, start production mid-2008, and by 2009 you’ve got a brand spanking robot sequel that will make $100s of millions at the box office.
Here’s Coming Soon with the word:
Despite a recent comment from Transformers director Michael Bay that the studio hasn’t been going full speed ahead on a sequel because of the possible strike next year, Paramount Pictures has now set a June 26, 2009 release date for Transformers 2. It is unclear who all will return for the sequel, [...]

That stupid writers strike. It looks like another victim will be “Transformers 2″, or at least according to everything I’ve read. Hollywood studios are rushing everything they can into production before the strike hits next year (if negotiations are still unresolved, that is), but it doesn’t appear as if Transformers 2 will be one of them. Which is not an entirely bad thing, from my perspective. Transformers 2 may not require a sophisticated script, but I’m reasonably certain that, at the minimum, two years is required for pre-production and post-production to work out all the robot-intensive scenes, so rushing the sequel into production now just to beat the strike would be disastrous on the film’s quality.
Here’s what Michael Bay says about it via his message board:
“But I just saw the first IMAX print of ‘Transformers’. Not depressing – freakin AWESOME! They need to bottle the magic of IMAX because it’s the future of cinema.
