Who knew making fun of vain, narcissistic, and overly paid Hollywood actors was so profitable? Ben Stiller, that’s who. The actor-director’s comedy “Tropic Thunder” continued to reign supreme at the box office for the third straight week, knocking off would-be usurpers “Babylon A.D.”, “Traitor”, and “Disaster Movie”. The last film was, thankfully, a disaster, opening at #7 with a $6 million dollar take. Let’s hope everyone who rushed out to see the movie got hit by a car on their way out of the theater, thereby saving the human race from stupid babies in the near future.
In its third week, Ben Stiller’s “Tropic Thunder”, about a bunch of idiotic actors making a war movie, who encounters real enemies, took in $11.5 million, for a 3-week total of $84 million. Not bad, but the film is still about $10 million short of making back its budget. It will undoubtedly earn a profit at the theaters, and should make even more on [...]

Tom Cruise has a cameo (well, it’s almost five minutes long, so I guess it’s more than a cameo) in the Ben Stiller comedy “Tropic Thunder”, playing the bald, overweight, and cold-blooded owner of a talent agency film studio that handles the career of Stiller’s action hero character. It’s supposed to be Tom Cruise’s best work in a long, long time, pretty much because Cruise is playing against type. Can you imagine Cruise doing a serious movie where he’s overweight, bald, and calling people “playa” as hip hop music play in the background?
Here’s that 5-minute appearance by Cruise in “Tropic Thunder” that someone put up on YouTube. Obviously this thing is going to get pulled faster than you can say, “Run, Katie Holmes, run!”, but in the meantime, it sure is oddly brilliant, ain’t it? Easily the Cruister’s best work since, well, he and Goose made out in the cockpit of their Tomcats in “Top Gun”. What, you didn’t see [...]

As a rule, I avoid comedies like the plague. Either they are too low-brow for my tastes, relying on flatulence or gross sexual situations for laughs, or they cannot sustain their humor. Comedies also tend to be dominated by flavor-of-the-month performers, usually someone who was on “Saturday Night Live,” who churn out one film after another until they’ve saturated the market. Just a few of the offenders include Will Ferrell, Mike Myers, Owen Wilson, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, and Ben Stiller. Despite my aversion to Stiller, I have seen a fair number of his films. Not because of him, though. He just happened to be in the cast. This is the same reason, I saw “Tropic Thunder.” Stiller may have co-written it, directed it, and starred in it, but for me the draw was Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. Early buzz, too, has been favorable, with “Newsweek,” “E!” and “Rolling Stone” hailing it as this summer’s funniest comedy.

It took Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. in black face to take down the Dark Knight, but by golly they did. The racially and politically incorrect comedy, about a bunch of idiot actors who find themselves caught in a real war but are too dense to realize it, “Tropic Thunder” opened with a $26 million dollar weekend debut, good enough for first place, and knocking “The Dark Knight” down to second place with $16.8 million, according to studio estimates. That brings “Knight” to a 5-week total of $471 million in domestic box office tickets alone. Add $329 million the comic book movie has already made in overseas markets, and “The Dark Knight” is a mammoth hit with $800 million in total grosses worldwide.
Besides “Tropic Thunder”, four other films opened over the weekend in hopes of dethroning the Dark Knight. They weren’t quite as successful. George Lucas’ “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” opened in third place with $15.5 million, proving [...]

Seriously, if you aren’t laughing your ass off at everything in this international trailer for Ben Stiller’s “Tropic Thunder” (it’s sort of like the domestic one, plus a couple of new scenes, I think), then you’re a lost cause, because “Tropic Thunder” looks like it has the potential to be the funniest damn thing to come down this well-lubed pipe called Hollywood since the guys in suits figured out they could make a movie about a dead guy who two douche bags dress up and use to get in strip clubs and bars and what have you. And if the finished product doesn’t turn out nearly as hilarious (”Zoolander”, anyone?), then hey, there should be a chuckle here or there just watching Robert Downey Jr. play a guy who is playing a guy in a movie. Righteous, man.

I didn’t think Ben Stiller’s “Tropic Thunder” was all that funny when I first saw the first pictures of it, but I’ll be damn if it hasn’t, slowly but surely, grown on me. First of all, just the notion of Robert Downey Jr. playing an actor who “surgically enhances” his face to look like a black man just so he can play a character in the film’s movie-within-a-movie is just downright hilarious. What, he never heard of script changes? Check out the Red Band trailer for “Tropic Thunder”.

Stiller. Black. And Downey Jr. Individually they’re actors — together they’re … TROPIC THUNDER!!! [Insert thunder sound effects here] Via IESB, here are four new posters for Ben Stiller’s upcoming farcical comedy set (sort of) in the Vietnam War. There are actually three posters, with a fourth that combines the individual three posters. And yes, Robert Downey Jr. is still playing a white guy wearing black paint. Oh man, this movie is going to have me rolling in the aisles, I just know it.

Two more fresh looks at Ben Stiller’s return behind the camera, the movie about the movie about the Vietnam War, “Tropic Thunder”, have surfaced online via Rope of Silicon. And yes, one of the pictures show Robert Downey Jr. in his black paint. Man, that’s gonna cause a lot of problems, huh? I bet Stiller never anticipated all the hoopla that’s going on about it. Sounds a lot like a great gag gone terrible wrong. We’ll see as the movie’s release grows closer.

“Mother Nature just pissed her pantsuit!” That’s one of the lines from the red band trailer for Ben Stiller’s comedy “Tropic Thunder”. You know, the movie where Robert Downey Jr., fresh from playing heroic comic book hero in “Iron Man”, covers himself in black paint to play a white man who puts on black paint to play a black man in the movie? Um, wait, that doesn’t really make sense. Oh, whatever, check out the teaser trailer for the movie yourself below.

Entertainment Weekly has got your first look at Ben Stiller’s “Tropic Thunder”, a movie comedy/spoof that he’s directing, his first directorial gig since 2001’s kinda-crappy/kinda-funny “Zoolander”. The film was supposed to star Owen Wilson as a spoiled actor doing the “modern equivalent” of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now”, but now stars Robert Downey Jr. (”Iron Man”) in face paint because, er, the original script within the movie called for a black actor in the role, so Downey Jr.’s character, being the braindead actor that he is (you know, usual actor stuff), decides to paint his face black for the role. No, seriously.
More:
Stiller got the idea for Thunder more than 20 years ago while shooting a small part in Steven Spielberg’s WWII drama Empire of the Sun. He’s continued to develop the script as his own star has risen, which makes taking on his brethren all the richer — watch for cameos from Tom Cruise and Tobey Maguire — and all [...]
