While there might be a hilarious buddy sitcom in here somewhere, Steven Spielberg and Stephen King, cinematic and literary savants respectively, are teaming up to produce a television cable miniseries, according to Variety, based on King’s recent book, Under the Dome, which is about an enigmatic force field that descends on a small Maine town. The plot synopsis might sound like Stephen King’s lamp monster, in which he can literally take any concept and turn it into a horror story, but critics are hailing it as a return to form for the prolific author.
On the other hand, Spielberg has been going strong in his old age, as if he’s on some cinematic Viagra, but he will only probably be involved in so much that Dreamworks is producing it, so it’s not like some mythical matchup, where Superman and Batman team up together, with King writing and Spielberg directing. Instead, Spielberg will probably have limited creative control, with only the powers [...]

It’s finally official – “Chuck” is coming back, earlier than what previous rumors told us. Instead of the unfortunate March release date that some anticipated, two back-to-back episodes of “Chuck” will be airing Sunday, January 10, and then the show will immediately fall into its new slot, Mondays at 8. This means that, from January 10-11, we’ll be getting the first three episodes of the new 13 episode season.
For those that aren’t aware, “Chuck” is a comedy/drama about a man who, due to the actions of a former friend, has been sucked into the world of spies. It received much critical acclaim, and after the second season subsided at the show’s future was bleak, a “Save Chuck” campaign convinced NBC to bring the show back for a third season. **Spoiler Alerts** The second season ended in a somewhat strange fashion – Chuck “absorbed” the new Intersect, which not only gave him more government information lodged into his brain, he also [...]

I’ve read a lot of Warren Ellis’ comic book work, but I’ve never read his “Global Frequency”. Initially I thought this was the comic series “Planetary”, but apparently they are two separate works. In “Frequency”, a woman name Miranda Zero leads a covert unit made up of exactly 1,001 operatives around the world, and their mission is to stop world-threatening situations before the public knows about it. Ellis apparently fashioned the series as a series of single, stand-alone issues, much like a TV show. Warner Bros. tried to adapt the comic into a TV series back in 2005, when the channel was still called WB. Fast-forward to 2009, and the WB is now the CW, and they’re once again looking at a “Global Frequency” series.
MTV reports that Warren Ellis has all but confirmed the second attempt at a “Global Frequency” TV series, posting:

What else is there to say except World War II was Goddamn brutal, but it had to be fought. From Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg comes the “Band of Brothers” movie for the next decade, the epic mini-series “The Pacific”. As the title implies, this one doesn’t bother with the war in Europe, but will instead take a look at the hell in the Pacific, and follows a cast of Marines as they invade the Japanese islands on their way to taking down the Empire. HBO released the second trailer last month. As with “Band of Brothers”, the actors are mostly unknowns, which is the way it should be because this isn’t a mini-series about actors, it’s about the people they’re playing. HBO premieres the mini-series next year in March.

As mentioned last month, J.J. Abrams is returning to the TV spy game with a new TV show, but we didn’t know the title of his husband-and-wife spy show then. Now we do: it’s going to be called “Undercovers”, which I suppose is a decent enough title. I guess. Hey, he’s J.J. Abrams, if he thinks that’s a cool title, I guess it is. In any case, the other big news is that Abrams is directing the pilot for NBC.
Described as a cross between “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and (of course) “The Bourne Identity” (seriously, someone please make another great action movie so I can stop hearing how this movie or that TV show is “like ‘The Bourne Identity’”), “Undercovers” will be Abrams’ first pilot since 2004’s “Lost” pilot. The show was co-created by Abrams and Josh Reims, and will center on two married spies who are also deeply in love with one another. So I suppose one of [...]

After all, i’s not easy loving America’s greatest badass warrior (onscreen or off, as it turns out). Luckily for the two lovely ladies, “24″ was just a TV show, and they’ve survived to reunite on the FX Channel’s third season of “Damages”. I’ve never seen “Damages”, but it’s won a ton of awards, and that’s gotta be for a reason, right? The show, I believe, revolves around the world of high-stakes litigation, and originally launched with Glenn Close and Rose Byrne as its female stars.
THR has Sarah Wynter (top, left) playing a mysterious “security specialist” who assists a high-level assistant district attorney to be played by Martin Short. Together, they try to unravel an ongoing financial scheme. Oooh, timely! Here’s hoping the two don’t hook up onscreen because, let’s face it, it’s just gonna look weird.
Aylesworth (bottom), meanwhile, gets boring wife duty as the spouse of Campbell Scott’s [...]

It’s a show about crisis situations, with each episode taking place at the end of the crisis and bypassing all that dull build-up stuff that usually accompanies said crisis situations on TV shows. You know, lots of talking, lots of button pushing, and lots of gradual panicking? When all that’s out of the way, in will drop the Zeroes, described as a team of “absolutely ruthless” guys who will deal with the situation at hand with good old fashion brute force. That’s the idea behind “Zeroes”, which “Crank” and “Gamer” writers/directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor are developing for NBC.
Says Taylor:
“We want to drop right into it and sustain the absolute most berserk state of crisis, when all of the options have been exhausted. We want to take that last 60 minutes and sustain it for the entire show.”
Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor will write and direct the one-hour pilot for NBC.

First you thought he was a dolt, then it turns out he was kinda a mastermind. Okay, not really, because his conspiracy blew up in his face pretty fast, thanks to one Jack Bauer, but he was orchestrating the whole thing. The trades are now reporting that Charles Logan (played by Gregory Itzin) will return for a multi-episode arc in the show’s upcoming eighth season, which will premiere with a two-night, four-hour bow on January 17 and 18.
As you’ll recall, the disgraced Prez was thought dead during Season 6, when his wife (in an awesome moment) shanked him in the neck. As it turns out, not so much; it was mentioned briefly that he survived his ordeal last year, but we never saw him. Now he’s back for Season 8, when female Prez Allison Taylor calls him in to help with an escalating international diplomatic crisis.

Well this is nice. I’ve been wondering whatever happened to Sasha Alexander after she had a temporary case of brain farts and decided to leave the hit CBS show “NCIS” just as it was becoming a gargantuan hit. You know, “NCIS”? That “CSI” show set in the military? After doing a mostly forgettable stint in the movies, Alexander is returning to the small screen as Angie Harmon’s partner in TNT’s new female-centric cop show “Rizzoli”. She will play Maura Isles, the Boston medical examiner who usually teams up with Harmon’s Rizzoli to solve crimes.
Besides Alexander, three other names have been added to the cast: Bruce McGill, Jordan Bridges and Lee Thompson Young. McGill will play Detective Vince Korsak, Rizzoli’s former partner, who takes it personally when Rizzoli takes on a new partner in the very green Barry Frost (Young). Bridges, meanwhile, will play Franke Rizzoli Jr., our female lead’s younger brother, a Boston patrol officer who worships his big sis [...]

And yes, I still can’t believe I just said this is the eighth season for the show. To say that it’s “aging” now would be an understatement. For God’s sake, Jack Bauer is now someone’s grandpa! Another terrorist-infested and conspiracy-laden day starts all over January 2010.
Season 8 of “24″ has Jack Bauer going up against terrorists intent on killing an important Middle Eastern diplomat in New York for a meeting with the U.S. President. Cherry Jones returns as President Taylor, along with Mary Lynn Rajskub as Chloe O’Brian. Also back is Elisha Cuthbert as Kim Bauer. Yeah, I could have done without her, too, but apparently she’s necessary given that Jack now has a granddaughter to save. Hopefully the little tyke won’t be as hostage-prone as mommy.

Anyways, Angie Harmon is returning to crime TV with a new show, but this time she’s the female lead. Unlike her stint on “Law and Order” (the original one, not one of the 52 spin-offs), Harmon will be slipping on the police badge as a Boston Detective on the new TV show “Rizzoli” for TNT, the go-to home of tough TV chicks with badges.
Harmon’s character, Jane Rizzoli, is based on the popular mystery novels by writer Tess Gerritsen. Rizzoli is a tough but sensitive Detective who works on her cases with fellow mystery solver Maura Isles, the resident medical examiner. The role of Isles has still to be cast.

I suppose that Americans have come to expect entertainment specifically tailored to their very fine tastes. For once I’d like to see how audiences would react when, instead of an American version, the British versions of shows like The Office or Life on Mars were given a run. Unfortunately, those are not David Fincher’s plans: The Hollywood Reporter reports that he is preparing to adapt House of Cards for American audiences. In this case it makes sense; House of Cards is heavily steeped in British political lore:
Based on the book and British miniseries of the same name, “Cards” will be adapted for U.S. audiences as a one-hour drama, with “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” director Fincher executive producing with the film’s writer, Eric Roth.

It’s called “The Quickening”, and it’s a new cop show from A&E (cause, obviously, there isn’t nearly enough cop shows on TV at the moment) set to star Radha Mitchell, known primarily for her movie roles in films like “Silent Hill”, “Surrogates”, and the upcoming “The Crazies” remake. While this will be Mitchell’s first foray onto American TV land as the lead, it won’t be the first time an actress known for her movie work decided to take the leap onto the small screen.
I stopped watching The Simpsons on FOX about, oh, I don’t know, 10 or so years ago. I just stopped watching it one day, and realized I didn’t miss it all that much. Of course, South Park coming along to take up the slack probably helped, and I just didn’t realize I was swapping one favorite animated show for another. All that is to say that Marge Simpson is the surprise cover girl of Playboy’s November issue.
Why Marge? Says Scott Flanders (I shit you not, I’m not making that name up), the recently-hired chief executive of Playboy Enterprises:
“It had never been done, and we thought it would be kind of hip, cool and unusual.”
Hey, Scott, you know why it’s never been done before? Probably cause it’s kinda hard to crank one out to a yellow animated chick with blue hair. I’m just sayin’.
The issue, due out in brown paper bags everywhere October 16, will include the cover (below), an [...]

J.J. Abrams’ career blossomed when he introduced Sidney Bristow and her SD-6 problems to the world in the ABC spy show Alias. The Bad Robot head honcho is now poised to return to the TV spy game with a new spy show, this time about two spies who also happens to be married. No word if they know about each other’s identities, but considering that the “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” angle has been explored already (in the movie and a would-be TV show that never got off the ground), I’m gonna give Abrams the benefit of the doubt and say he’s not going to tread the same old territory.
Since Abrams is known for his spy adventures on TV, the show, which is created by Abrams and his Felicity comrade Josh Reims, generated quite the bidding war between the networks. According to The Wrap, the project finally went to NBC for a hefty paycheck and “significant penalties attached” in case the [...]

Really, he’s wearing purple. If you’re going to go and change the Phantom’s costume completely, shouldn’t you also change the color, too? Why bother holding onto the ridiculous purple if you’ve already chucked the costume? I’m just sayin’. Anyways, that’s probably one of the things you’ll be wondering when RHI Entertainment’s 21st century version of The Phantom lands on the SyFy Channel as a mini-series (and backdoor pilot) sometime in 2010. The first trailer for it below.
The legendary superhero returns in this modern-day and action packed miniseries event. When Kit Walker (Ryan Carnes) learns of his father’s death, the adventurous young man inherits the mantle of his superhero father. As the new Phantom, the 21st in the Walker line, Kit vows to uphold and honor his ancestors’ creed—to fight crime and injustice throughout the world.
Starring Ryan Carnes, Cas Anvar, Isabella Rossellini, Sandrine Holt	, Cameron Goodman, Trevor Hayes, Robert Crooks, Ellen David, and directed by Paolo Barzman.

I suppose if you had to turn to someone to adapt another Stephen King story into an ongoing series, you could do worst than Scott Shepherd, Lloyd Segan and Shawn Piller, the trio that somehow managed to turn a King novel into a long-running TV series in The Dead Zone, which ran for six seasons and resurrected the career of Anthony Michael Hall as psychic Johnny Smith. Their latest project will be adapting King’s “The Colorado Kid”, since retitled Haven to the small screen as an ongoing show.
As is per King’s M.O., the action in Haven will revolve around a spooky Maine town populated by cursed individuals who attempt to live a normal life, essentially exiling themselves from the rest of the human population. But when their curses start returning, the feds send in Special Agent Audrey Parker to deal with it.
According to Wikipedia, the show’s premise is actually pretty far off from the actual novella by King, which had [...]

You might not know it by looking at him, but beneath Andy Richter’s suave exterior is concealed an intellectual, erudite mind worth $68,000. This is the mind of a man who beat Smartest Person in the World Wolf Blitzer (SPitWWB) and an impressive showing by Desperate Housewives star Dana Delany in front of a national audience on Celebrity Jeopardy. Sure, the questions were softballs, but Andy Richter trumped SPitWWB on geography, history, and literature. God bless Wolf, he works with what he has. At one point he was at -$4,600 before they politely put him back in the green so that he could participate in final Jeopardy.
The Tonight Show chronicled Andy’s exploits behind the scenes in practice. The aired episode can be seen below.

While attending the screening of his directorial debut “The Hungry Ghosts” in New York City, someone armed with an entertainment blog had the balls to ask “The Sopranos” veteran Michael Imperioli about the rumors surrounding a possible big-screen version of the popular HBO series. His answer, of course, was a resounding “No.” Of course, this mean absolutely nothing, as things change at the drop of a hat deep within the heart of the Great Hollywood Money Machine. The thing that bothers me the most about this particular piece of fleeting entertainment news isn’t the fact that the movie isn’t going to happen — it’s the fact that someone felt the need to inquire about “The Sopranos” when Imperioli was there to promote a completely unrelated project. Heaven forbid they ask questions that actually pertain to “The Hungry Ghosts.”
Here’s an idea: When you’re hired to cover a movie for a reputable magazine, it might be in your best interest to focus [...]

Three new enlistees for the eighth season of FOX’s 24 (via THR): Rami Malek will play Marcos, an Arab-American and would-be suicide bomber; Julian Morris as a CTU SWAT agent; and Hrach Titizian will play Nabeel, the second-in-command of security for President Hassan (”Slumdog Millionaire’s” Anil Kapoor), a visiting Middle Eastern diplomat who becomes targeted for assassination, forcing Jack Bauer to come out of retirement (again) to save the day.
Over at the USA Network, the Piper Perabo spy show Covert Affairs gets three new castmembers as well: Eric Lively and Kari Matchett will play senior CIA agents, with Lively’s character named Conrad Sheehan III, described as “a third-generation CIA man and womanizer who enjoys a spicy rapport with Annie”, Perabo’s junior CIA agent character.
Matchett (below), most recently seen in the canceled sci-fi show Invasion, will play Annie’s boss, described as a driven CIA agent in charge of the agency’s Domestic Protection Division. And finally, Eion Bailey will play Annie’s [...]
