According to Topher Grace, who played the human version of Venom in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 3″, he isn’t sure if he’ll ever play Venom again. Or at least, no one has talked to him about it. Movieweb caught up with the actor while he was on the set of the Robert Rodriguez-produced “Predators”, where quite the many web bloggers were over the weekend. Here’s what Grace said in response to the question about “Venom”.
“Um, I don’t know? You know, I guess. I don’t know, I haven’t heard anything. No, I don’t think so.”
Actors, they’re always the last to know, right? Anyways, I don’t think the character will be missing much. I liked Grace as the skinny neighbor kid on “That ’70’s Show”, but let’s face it, he just didn’t work out very well as Eddie Brock aka Venom. Then again, there were just so many villains in that movie, that ol Brock didn’t really get a whole lot of character [...]

I have to admit, the notion of Gary Ross, the guy behind “Pleasantville” and “Seabiscuit” writing “Spider-Man 4″ was kinda a shock already, but the idea of him writing and directing a “Venom” spin-off movie was just … strange, though not unheard of; Marvel has, after all, given “Thor” to Shakespeare guy Kenneth Branagh, and that’s possibly the biggest WTF moment of 2008. Now, word from The Playlist is that Venom will have to wait, because Gary Ross has just hopped onboard “Matt Helm” with an eye towards writing and directing it.
Originally, Steven Spielberg was anxious to direct “Matt Helm”, a personal favorite of his, but apparently a recent split between Spielberg’s Dreamworks and Paramount may have dampened the uber director’s affections for the Donald Hamilton series of spy novels. As a result, Spielberg has voluntarily left the project, leaving space open for Gary Ross to take over.
If Ross does end up writing and directing the big-screen adventures of the [...]

Well now ain’t this just out of left field. Filmmaker Gary Ross, writer/director on such inspirational dramas as “Pleasantville” and “Seabiscuit”, was recently tapped to take a swing at the “Spider-Man 4″ script, which got a lot of heads turning. And now the heads are gonna keep turning, because according to THR, Ross has been given the job of adapting “Venom”, a spin-off movie based on the Spider-Man franchise. That’s not all, too: Ross is scripting the movie with an eye toward directing it himself, his first movie since 2003’s “Seabiscuit”.
“Venom” will be based on the black alien symbiote from outer space featured in the third “Spider-Man” movie. You know, the gooey black stuff that landed on Earth thanks to a meteorite, then slithered around before finally landing on poor Topher Grace and turning him into a huge black Spider-Man wannabe with giant teeth? That’s Venom.
As is usually the case, the symbiote’s origins actually go further than what was [...]

It’s probably an idea that sounded practical on paper: in “Spider-Man 3″, the symbiote becomes the impetus for Peter Parker’s aggression toward Harry Osborn and others. And, hey, let’s throw the Sandman in there so that there’s more of an anchor of humanity outside of Peter and Harry. But 139 minutes proved too little time to turn the story into a coherent film.
Now Sony wants to go ahead with a movie that completely indulges in the Venom character from beginning to end. There are no plot details, but “Zombieland” co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have announced, in an exclusive interview with Scifi Wire, that they’ve turned in a script. Wernick told Scifi Wire:
“We’ve written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they’re pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward.”

“Spider-Man 4″ begins shooting next year. There are no details about the “Venom” film’s relationship to “Spider-Man 4″ or when it will begin shooting. You would think [...]

To be honest with you, I’m not sure what Sony’s big obsession with making a Venom spin-off movie (from the Sam Raimi “Spider-Man” films) is. I mean, sure, it’s a semi-decent character, but is there really that much potential in it? Then again, maybe I’ve just been exposed to the character for so long, that he’s no longer all that interesting to me. But anyways, Sony still has love for the big glob of black alien goo, because they’ve officially hired writers to take a crack at the script for the spin-off movie.
SciFiWire reports that Sony has handed the character over to “Zombieland” writing partners Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. Says the duo about their upcoming gig:
“We read [Venom] growing up, but we were not experts,” Reese said. “We certainly know the mythology of Venom, but went back and learned more when it became clear that we could actually get this job.”
The writers won’t reveal any details about their ongoing [...]

So yeah, I was kind of harsh on Todd McFarlane when he was talking to MTV about doing his own “Spawn 2″ movie a while back, but I gotta admit, after hearing him talk about the upcoming “Venom” movie by Sony, and how it’s got problems, I gotta agree with the dude. McFarlane, who created the character Venom for the comic books during his run on Spider-Man, makes some good points, including the fact that it’ll be a little hard to root for a bad guy that has been, traditionally, one evil and scary SOB. I’ve read some of the current crop of comics where Venom is a sorta good guy, and it just feels … weird.
Anyways, some highlights from McFarlane’s talk with Newsarama:
“You don’t want to scare the kids, because the kids love the character,” McFarlane said of Venom, echoing the sentiment of those in Hollywood who maintain superhero movies must be PG or PG-13 to succeed because they [...]

With Sony’s spider senses tingling over the brouhaha that’s currently going on around “Spider-Man 4″ (will Tobey Maguire return? will Sam Raimi stop acting like a prima donna and decide if he wants to come back or not already? does anyone care what Kirsten Dunst thinks at all?), they’re moving on with plans to do a “Spider-Man” spin-off that focuses on the villain Venom. Topher Grace originally played the character in the last Spidey installment, but the studio is looking to replace him with a more bankable actor. They’re already sending out word that they’re looking for new scripts.
THR has more on Sony’s quest to squeeze blood from a stone that is the Spidey franchise:
The studio is developing the project, based on the gooey nemesis who appeared in “Spider-Man 3″ and is hoping the character could serve as an antidote to the aging “Spider-Man” franchise in the way that Fox has used Wolverine to add longevity to its “X-Men” franchise.

Alien symbiote and piles of goo Venom to get his own movie post-”Spider-Man 3″? Hey, why not, it’s not like we saw enough of him in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 3″. In fact, we didn’t see a whole lot of anyone in that movie, thanks to Raimi’s insistence on jamming the flick with about two villains too many. Seriously, Sam, what were you thinking? In any case, the news that Venom might be getting his own spin-off movie sounds fantastic — but only if Topher Grace stays the hell out of it.
More:

But Venom fans rejoice, Marvel is moving forward with a new stand alone film, yep you heard right, Venom is coming back to the big screen.
We’ve confirmed that “the studio” has met recently with several “A list writers” about a spin-off film.
Back to the Grace issue. I liked the skinny kid from That ’70s Show, but man, was he ever wrong for Eddie Brock! Especially when Grace did that smirk [...]
