As expected by pretty much everyone who has heard of the name Pixar before, the animated company’s “WALL-E” met and exceeded expectations in its debut weekend, taking in an estimated $62.5 million, good enough for the story about a junk robot who meets a more high-tech version on a junkyard Planet Earth to claim the third best opening by a Pixar movie. The reigning champ from the studio remains “The Incredibles”, which hit $70.5 million back in 2004. But as well as “WALL-E” did, I have to admit, “Wanted’s” numbers were just as incredible, also meeting and exceeding all expectations. The violent R-rated shootfest starring Angelina Jolie as a tattoo-covered assassin who trains a young man the tools of her trade scored an impressive $51.1 million. Not bad at all, especially when you consider that no one expected the film to make more than $30 to $35 million.
Meanwhile, last weekend’s champ, the Steve Carell comedy “Get Smart” fell to #3 [...]

At the rate that Hollywood is cranking through comic books to fill up its studios, film worthy comics may soon become as scarce as crude oil. The latest entry is “Wanted,” helmed by Russian action golden boy du juor, Timur Bekmambetov (director of the currently in progress “Night Watch” vampire trilogy). Based on yet another in a long line of anonymous action comics, “Wanted” is a hard edged, no holds barred action romp like everything we’ve seen before. Given the paltry success rate in page-to-screen comic book adaptations, Hollywood may be turning more frequently to retreading their past failures like what was just attempted with The Hulk. “Wanted” does nothing to stem that tide.
The movie introduces us to Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy, “The Last King of Scotland”), a harried and henpecked accountant whose life has hit such a level of insignificance that his name doesn’t bring up any hits on Google. Wesley’s father disappeared when [...]

“Night Watch” (2004) put Russian director Timur Bekmambetov on the map. Based on the novel by Sergei Lukyanenko, it tells of the ancient battle between light (good) and dark (evil) and the man who will decide which side will triumph. Why did this Russian language film make such a splash? It’s a visual stunner with plenty of violence and “disturbing images.” What’s more, it deals with the supernatural – vampires, witches and the like – and it’s “hip.” Two years later, “Day Watch,” the second part of the trilogy was released. The third part, “Twilight Watch” is due out in 2009.
Thanks to Hollywood, those who want to experience Bekmambetov without having to read those pesky subtitles can see “Wanted,” which marks his English-language debut. Based on Mark Millar and J.G. Jones’ “dark” comic series, the film centers on Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy), an account manager who admits he’s apathetic about his existence. And why not? Being him sucks. His [...]

My fellow movie site guys always find ways to surprise me. Here’s one: they’re shocked that the guys behind “Wanted” are already talking about making a sequel to their not-yet-opened movie. Guys, really? You’re shocked by this “news”? Movie people are always “talking” about sequels (or in some cases, trilogies!) to movies that haven’t opened yet. This is what’s called “feeler” — float it out there, see what people think. 99% of the time it never amounts to anything because the movie, eventually, goes on to do poorly, or the stars have other things to do that doesn’t involve roman numerals.
But hey, who am I to pour water on my fellow movie geeks. Here’s what MTV has to say regarding possible “Wanted” sequels while talking to “Wanted” co-star Terence Stamp:
Now, as that bullet-ridden action flick is getting ready for release on June 27th, Stamp is eager to drop a bombshell of his own: The filmmakers are already talking sequel.

For your perusal pleasure, here is a 7-minute clip from Russian director Timur Bekmambetov’s Hollywood debut, “Wanted”. It’s nothing you haven’t seen before, but it does extend the supermarket scene where Fox meets Wesley for the first time and informs him about his dear old dead dad. Plus, the car chase that follows.
The film stars James McAvoy as a office drone who gets pulled out of his comfy but very crappy existence by Angelina Jolie, and into a world full of excitement, action, flipping cars, curving bullets, and blue ball inspired teasing by Jolie. Hey, it sounds just like my Sunday nights — minus the flipping cars, that is. I can only pull those off on Saturdays. Plus, Angelina Jolie has never climbed up on top of my car hood and showed me her hoo-haa. YET.
Some observations about the clip: Besides the action, there’s a visual gag every other scene. Well, that’s one way to convince the audience not [...]

If all the “Wanted” clips are any indication, shooting helpless people when they least expect it is really fun, especially when Angelina Jolie and her teasing nakedness is there to lend you a hand. This latest “Wanted” clip has Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) giving the middle finger to gravity and suspension of disbelief by taking out a limo-riding, bulletproof-glass hiding bad guy big shot in the most improbable of ways.
How do we know the guy he’s about to whack is a bad guy big shot? Well, for one, he’s riding in a limo, and we know what gas guzzlers those are, so he has to be evil right there cause he doesn’t care about the environment and whatnot; two, he’s smoking a cigar, and as Hollywood has taught us, nothing screams “evil” like puffing on a big, beefy cigar in the comforts of your gas guzzling limo. What a bastard. It’s a good thing Wesley is there to put [...]

Here’s the latest trailer for Timur Bekmambetov’s “Wanted”; it’s basically the same trailer I posted a few days ago, except this one is labeled “Red Band”, which means it includes additional footage of bloodletting and Morgan Freeman drops the F-bomb, which is, let me say, really strange to hear. Morgan Freeman just shouldn’t cuss, man, that just isn’t right. The rest of the trailer, though — still pretty bloody kick ass. This thing is looking better with every trailer.
A young man finds out his long lost father is an assassin. And when his father is murdered, the son is recruited into his father’s old organization and trained by a man named Sloan to follow in his dad’s footsteps.
Starring Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy, and Morgan Freeman. Directed by Timur Bekmambetov from the comic book series by Mark Millar.
Get wanted June 27, 2008.

Not that long ago I posted a Russian trailer for the new Angelina Jolie movie “Wanted” and lamented the fact that, although I couldn’t understand a single thing being said in the trailer (it being in Russian and all), I still thought it was at least 100 times better than anything I’ve seen from its U.S. counterparts so far. Well buckle up, kiddos, because that’s now changed — here’s a brand spanking new U.S. trailer for “Wanted”, and it is goooooooood. Seriously, they should have been showing this thing in the first place.
And yes, more curving bullets than you can shake a stick at. I used to think it was kind of silly, but you know what? It’s growing on me. Curving bullets is just cool, man.

One of the major grumbles about the upcoming Angelina Jolie movie “Wanted” is that it’s nothing like the comic books by Mark Millar. Or, actually, there are parts of it, like the set-up in the beginning, that are like the comics, but the major thrust of the comics have been drastically altered. The comics were set in a parallel reality where the supervillains have actually killed or defeated their superhero counterparts, and those that aren’t dead have had their memories wiped, and are, occasionally, pluck out of the streets by the bad guys to torture for fun and games for old times sake. Instead of the world being run by a cabal of supervillains who have, essentially, now gone “respectable”, the movie posits the Fraternity of assassins instead.
But wait, what’s that you say, Millar’s “Wanted” was always meant to be a simple action story about a bunch of assassins called the Fraternity?
SciFiWire has this:

As part of their MTV Movie Awards showcase, MTV has put up new clips for “Wanted”, “Hancock”, and “Twilight” that you probably saw on TV if you were watching the MTV Movie Awards today. What, you weren’t watching? Shame on you. (Plus, it means you have good taste in TV channels, but I digress.) The clip from “Twilight” features a vampire chasing the female lead, when the male lead (who is also a vampire) appears to help out; “Wanted” has Angelina Jolie doing her thing on the hood of a car, and more bullet “curving” action; while “Hancock” features that funny moment when Hancock lands in Jason Bateman’s suburban neighborhood and encounters some unruly kids.

Wow, if the American trailers for Russian director Timur Bekmambetov’s “Wanted” had been half as good as the one the studio cut for Russian consumption, more people would be jacked to see “Wanted” on the big screen. This thing is not just bloody, but it’s packed to the gills with outrageous action scenes. Also, notice that they actually digitized a lot of the words in the movie into Russian. I have no idea if they do this for the entire movie, or if this is just for the trailer.

The first clip (below) has James McAvoy’s hapless civilian fleeing an assassin when he’s rescued, in high style, by Angelina Jolie’s character, Fox, who I still think should have been played by Halle Berry (she’s a dead ringer for the comic book version), but eh, no one asked me.
A young man finds out his long lost father is an assassin. And when his father is murdered, the son is recruited into his father’s old organization and trained by a man named Sloan to follow in his dad’s footsteps.
Angelina Jolie teases June 27, 2008.

My guess is that “Wanted” will probably do okay at the box office when it’s finally released on June 27, 2008, but it won’t be a major hit. Chances are, it’ll be good enough to spit out a direct-to-DVD sequel or two, maybe, but the film just won’t have a whole lot of draw for many people. Most of the people who will see it will be fans of Mark Millar’s comic book of the same name, but everyone else will probably check it out for the action and Angelina Jolie doing what she does best — playing the bad girl on screen.
Here’s a pretty lengthy, 4-minute long behind-the-scenes featurette on “Wanted”, featuring more scenes from the film, and interviews with director Timur Bekmambetov and comic book writer Mark Millar, who, again, seems pleased as punch with the movie. Methinks Mark just wants to make a good impression on the Hollywood folks, this being his first movie and all. [...]

Here’s another movie poster for the upcoming action movie “Wanted”. As you can see, this one is very Angelina Jolie-centric, which is how it should be. You’re not going to sell this movie as “starring James McAvoy” or anyone else, you’re going to sell it as a “kick ass actioner starring Angelina Jolie”. And this poster gets that point across. Mind you, I still don’t think it’s anything particular good, at least compared to the last “Dark Knight” poster, but it’s an improvement.
A young man finds out his long lost father is an assassin. And when his father is murdered, the son is recruited into his father’s old organization and trained by a man named Sloan to follow in his dad’s footsteps.
Get wanted June 27, 2008.

In “Wanted”, Russian director Timur Bekmambetov (the “Night Watch” movies) makes his Hollywood debut by directing a generic action movie starring Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman. It doesn’t have a whole lot going for it except for those two big-name actors, since even comic book fans will be turned off by the film’s basic honoring of the original comics, despite whatever the comic’s creator, Mark Miller, has said. (”Mikey likes it!”) Here’s a new, barely impressionable poster for “Wanted”. Eh. Why even bother?
A young man finds out his long lost father is an assassin. And when his father is murdered, the son is recruited into his father’s old organization and trained by a man named Sloan to follow in his dad’s footsteps.
Starring James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman, Terence Stamp, Thomas Kretschmann, Common, Angelina Jolie, Kristen Hager, Marc Warren, and David O’Hara.
Get wanted June 27, 2008.

Okay, so maybe he didn’t say he wanted to punch himself because the movie adaptation of his “Wanted” comics was so good, but he is gushing about it over at his official site’s board. Millar makes mention that the film is “70%” truthful to his comics, which from the trailer you wouldn’t necessarily think so, but if the man says he’s pleased as punch with it, then who am I to argue the point? After all, he’s seen the whole thing, and I haven’t. Read the rest of Millar’s posting below.
Posted Millar at his forum (via):
Like James McAvoy said Wondercon, I saw the movie two weeks back and thought it was spectacular. It’s changed again from the shooting script as they refine and refine it, but every draft has been closer to the book and about 70% of the movie is now from the graphic novel. In fact, the reason I was there was to tweak little moments here and [...]

I still don’t like the fact that they completely changed up the entire foundation that made the “Wanted” comics the kick-ass, balls-to-the-wall piece of maniac fiction that it is completely for the film. But hey, no one asked me about it before they did it, so whatever. Here’s the latest trailer for “Wanted”, starring Angelina Jolie in her favorite of roles: the bad-ass chick who can kill and stab and seduce with the best of them. And oh yeah, it also co-stars James McAvoy (”Atonement”) and some dude name Morgan Freeman.
What you’ll see in the trailer is more talk about “the fraternity of assassins” and how they’re actually doing good. I think that’s the gist of the new trailer. I mean, right there, they completely reversed the whole point of the comics. But like I said, whatever, the guys who made it sold out, so what am I complaining about?
At least Angelina Jolie is hot in it, and chances [...]
