Speaking of Zack Snyder, here’s a long clip from the director’s last movie, “Watchmen”. It’s a deleted scene that features the death of Hollis Mason aka Nite Owl I, played by actor Stephen McHattie. Mason had a brief role in the theatrically released version of the movie, showing up to talk old times with Nite Owl II. In this deleted scene, which is available along with many others on the “Watchmen” Director’s Cut DVD available July 21st, Mason gets a surprise late-night visit from some thugs. He fights back, but alas, the kids these days are faster and more brutal than the villains he’s used to back in the good old days of costume adventuring. Mason puts up a good fight, but it’s not enough.
It’s actually a pretty brutal scene, and would fit in just fine with the theatrical release, which was pretty damn brutal at times. I guess they had to cut it for timing issues, as although [...]

Liked Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen”? Wished it was longer? How about seeing the same movie in theaters again, except 25 minutes longer? Well you’re in luck, buckaroos, because via Variety Warner Bros. has announced that they will be re-releasing the director’s cut of Snyder’s comic book movie “Watchmen” back into theaters on July 17 for a limited one-week run. Don’t get excited just yet: the WB will be putting the film back into theaters in only four cities — Dallas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and New York.
For those who couldn’t get enough of Doctor Manhattan and company, Snyder’s Director’s Cut will contain 25 additional minutes not included in the film’s original theatrical run earlier this year. The re-release is, of course, going to be used to promote the movie’s impending DVD release, which will include said Director’s Cut. The July 17th date will also be one week before Comic-Con, where Snyder will hold a BD Live screening of “Watchmen” on July [...]

Watchmen fans might get a kick out of this little spoof video depicting the characters of the graphic novel as starring in their own hypothetical cartoon show. Done in a style reminiscent of the late 80’s and early 90’s Saturday morning cartoon shows we grew up with, it takes certain liberties with the characters for comic effect. I think it’s great, and I am a fan of the Watchmen books, but I have a feeling some of the less enlightened Alan Moorites will take offense. In fact I hope it does, because they’re all a bunch of stiff snobs anyhow.

Who watches the Watchmen? Apparently the bean counters at Warner Bros., who spent a lot of money to make Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen” and gave the “300″ director all the leeway he asked for, and then some. All for naught, it would appear, as the film has yet to break through the $100 million mark at the box office in its third week. The film was Rated R, and was nearly three hours long. That, says WB, is the reason why they’re losing money.
A source deep within the bowels of the Warner Bros. headquarters in Big Movie Studio Land tells IESB this:
How much of the movie going market – specifically those that go to see superhero/genre films – is cut out by rating a film R versus a PG-13? Warner Bros. thinks too much and is said to be focusing solely on PG-13 rated superhero/tentpole films only, definitely harder than the “family friendly” superhero films of Fantastic Four but not in [...]

$86 million and counting. That’s how much Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen” has made in two weeks of release. It’s not an entirely bad take for a movie. Unless, of course, you factor in the massive amount of publicity the studio pumped into promotions for the movie and the film’s estimated $150 million dollar budget. Chances are “Watchmen” will break even, and maybe even turn a profit on DVD, but how much will be enough to call it a success?
“Watchmen” fell to second place in its second week, taking an estimated $18 million. It was easily beat out by The Rock’s kiddie action-adventure, the sci-fi “Race to Witch Mountain”, which claimed the top spot with $25 million in its debut weekend. The week’s two other new films, the horror remake “The Last House on the Left” and the raunchy comedy “Miss March” landed at third and tenth place, respectively. “House” took in an estimated $14.6 million, while “Miss March” managed a minor [...]

Here’s the really great opening credit sequence for Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen”. If this opening the film (after the Comedian’s murder) doesn’t get you jazzed up for the rest of the movie, then you were probably looking for that new Kate Hudson romantic comedy and entered the wrong auditorium, which makes you sorta stupid, but eh, whatever.
The whole thing is shot to Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’”, and chronicles the rise and fall of the superheroes from 1939 and ending in 1985, when Rorschach and the boys appear to take over where the original Minutemen left off. The whole thing is exciting and incredibly depressing at the same time.
Via the folks at Motionographer, who did the title sequence for the movie. Warner Bros. has told them to remove it, but they slyly link to this video anyway. Awesome.

Short version: It did good, but not that good. Long version: Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen” opened strong with an uber Thursday midnight showing and Friday take, but fizzled a tad over the weekend, finishing up without much competition in first place with an estimated $55.7 million at the box office. Not bad, but it could have been better. Industry folks were talking $70 million, the amount Synder’s last film “300″ opened with two years ago.
There’s no getting around it: Yeah, it did good business, but it didn’t do the kind of business people were expecting. And with a budget of $150 million, “Watchmen” is going to need a lot of overseas dough to make it the runaway success that everyone (from the studio to the comic book geeks) are hoping for. At this point, I’m not so sure. No doubt the film’s heavy R rating had a negative effect on ticket sales, as did the two and a half hour (plus) [...]

”I wish I didn’t already know how it’s going to end.” That was the thought that kept going through my head while watching Zack Snyder’s live-action adaptation of “Watchmen”, the limited series comic book that, along with Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns” made comic books respectable again. With their landmark graphic novel, writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons deconstructed the superhero and made them human – or in some cases, less than human – by offering in lieu of the usual good guys and bad guys in tights, instead psychopaths in masks, sexually dysfunctional has-beens, and a God that could no longer bring himself to care about the going-ons of man, a species he once belonged to. And with his 2009 movie “Watchmen”, Zack Snyder has accomplished the impossible: successfully adapted the comic book that everyone said could not be adapted. Take that, Alan Moore!
“Watchmen” the movie, like “Watchmen” the comic book, is set in an alternate [...]

Time magazine listed Alan Moore’s graphic novel “Watchmen” as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to the present, and called it “a work of ruthless psychological realism. It’s a landmark in the graphic novel medium. It would be a masterpiece in any.” And this publication isn’t alone. Numerous critics have hailed it as “peerless” and “brilliant.” It probably isn’t too surprising then that “Watchmen,” which was released by DC Comics between 1986 and 1987 in 12 installments, soon attracted Hollywood’s attention.
Terry Gilliam was probably the first to publicly declare his interest in bringing it to a movie theater near you, and the director maintained that interest until just a few years ago. Other names have been attached to the project, including Darren Aronofsky, Paul Greengrass, and even Michael Bay. Actors, too, became attached and when nothing came to fruition they pursued other interests. Some of the many rumored actors “in talks” for “Watchmen” include Simon Pegg, [...]

Plus, two more images from Robert Downey Jr.’s “Sherlock Holmes” manage to make top hats cool again. Well, kind of.

Now that the whole messy affair with Warner Bros. and the notorious and quickly becoming fan enemy #1 Fox Studios are done and over with, we can finally head on back down to our basement to finish up our Comedian (or Nite Owl, for some of you weirdos out there) costume for the Midnight showing of “Watchmen”. What, it’s not just me, is it? Anyways, because you can never have too much “Watchmen” goodness, here are even more “Watchmen” images to chew on, including some seriously great looks at the Comedian in all his shades of nuttiness. Seriously, folks, I haven’t been this excited to see a movie since Demi Moore inflated her fun bags and hopped on a stripper pole. Gosh, those were good times…
In a gritty and alternate 1985 the glory days of costumed vigilantes have been brought to a close by a government crackdown, but after one of the masked veterans is brutally murdered an investigation into [...]

Although we all knew it would eventually end up in a big settlement where Warner Bros. agrees to pay Fox a hell of a lot of moolah in return for Fox dropping their lawsuit on the “Watchmen” property, I think there’s a little sigh of relief all across geekdom that “Watchmen” will, in fact, open as originally planned on March 6, 2009. News out of Hollywood is that the two studio giants have settled, with Fox getting an assload of cash for their efforts, and Warner Bros. agreeing to take one for the team. Meanwhile, fanboys everywhere hastily rush to get time off from work so they can line up at the movie theater, as fanboys are wont to do.
THR has your good news:
Warner Bros. and Fox have resolved their dispute over “Watchmen,” with the studios scheduled to present a settlement to Judge Gary Feess this morning and request that the case be dismissed.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, [...]

Apparently Oliver Stone was wrong when he told us that my Grandmama involved in the conspiracy that killed JFK in Dallas all those years ago. In fact, it was the masked vigilante The Comedian that pulled the trigger while skulking around behind that infamous fence! See, Grandmama, I knew you were innocent all along. Anyways, here’s yet another International trailer for Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen”, which may or may not be released to you this Summer. If the film does get released, you’ll see plenty of politically sensitive storylines, it would appear, including even more appearances by the film’s version of Richard Nixon. At least, according to this Japanese trailer for the movie. Wonder why it’s so Nixon-heavy, though. What’s the deal with that?
It’s the 1980’s and it’s a different world. Superheroes have been outlawed, the only ones still in operation under direct control of the United States government. Suddenly, those heroes both still in action and retired find themselves targets [...]

You know, if the Fox studio has put out a decent movie in the last decade or so that has been friendly to geeks across the globe, and not just products that they are hoping will clean out the wallets of clueless johns like a Sunset Strip prostitute who claims she’s a virgin rolling over her latest client in a motel while he’s in the bathroom trying to figure out how to put on a condom, I can’t recall. More recently, their geek-ish films have included the much maligned live-action adaptations of “Dragonball” and “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li”, both of which have been less than positively received by fans. But you know what has been generating good buzz with geeks everywhere? Zack Snyder’s live-action adaptation of “Watchmen”. Which stands to reason why Fox is now doing all it can to keep you from seeing the movie.
The big news came out last week, when the judge lording over [...]

At this point, even if I hadn’t read Alan Moore’s comic book, I would already have known all there is to know about Zack Snyder’s upcoming “Watchmen”, including the ending. Not only because it’s such a hot commodity on the net and every site worth its hosting cost reports on every little tidbit about it, but because Snyder has been incredibly up front with the movie. I.e. he’s not hoarding all the little and big details the way these movie studios usually do with their big movies. Good for Snyder, but not so much if you want to keep a little bit of mystery when you head into the theaters. In any case, so what’s been up with “Watchmen” lately? Well for one, that damn FOX lawsuit is still ongoing, and looks like it’s going to keep going for a little while longer. Also, Snyder and company recently screened the first 22 minutes of “Watchmen” to a bunch of lucky [...]

Having introduced the sheer awesomeness of “Watchmen” to an ignorant populace in the first trailer, Zack Snyder and company are back with a second full-length “Watchmen” trailer, this one even more plot-heavy, and will be showing in front of “Quantum of Solace”, opening in theaters today. The new trailer spells out the plot of the movie, including the killing of the Comedian in the beginning, which sets the events in motion. We also get more of Rorschach’s investigation, Doctor Manhattan’s surrendering of his humanity, and more Watchmen in Vietnam. Plus, I’m pretty sure that somewhere in the trailer, you see the new ending to “Watchmen” that Snyder and the film’s writers have put in. I won’t come right out and spoil it for you, but if you read this and this, then you’ll know what I’m talking about.
HD version of the trailer can be found here. The two trailers below are the same version, but since Yahoo! may pull [...]
