It wouldn’t be a “Red” sequel without Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, and John Malkovich back for the second time around. Apparently Summit feels the same way, because the trio are officially onboard “Red 2″, and this time around they’ll be joined by Catherine Zeta-Jones and “G.I. Joe’s” Byung-hun Lee (aka Storm Shadow).
Dean Parisot (“Galaxy Quest”) will take over directing duties for Robert Schwentke. He will direct from a script by the brothers Hoeber, who also wrote the first movie (along with the upcoming “Battleship” for Peter Berg).
The first “Red” was based on a limited series comic book by Warren Ellis about one pissed off ex-CIA agent. That was a nihilistic piece of action that didn’t exactly have the happy ending of the happy-go-lucky movie adaptation. For the sequel, the heroes will head overseas to Europe, where they’ll engage in all manner of action with people way, way younger then them.
Also expected back is Mary-Louise Parker as the girlfriend of Willis’ character, though honestly, she was always a bit of an odd duck among the cast.
The first “Red” was a surprise hit, making just under $200 million worldwide. The sequel is set for August 2, 2013.
