Channing Tatum Really, Really, Really Wants to Play Gambit

Gambit 2

Gambit is my favorite X-Men character by far, which is why I was particularly irritated with his portrayal in director Gavin Hood’s misguided superhero flick “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” Taylor Kitsch is probably a really nice guy, but he’s definitely not what I had in mind for Gambit. I keep hoping someone will do the character justice.

Unfortunately, 20th Century Fox is keen on casting “Magic Mike” star Channing Tatum as Remy Etienne LeBeau in a standalone Gambit movie. Personally, I hate the idea. I LOATHE IT. I would love to see someone like Luke Evans tackle the role, though that’s probably not going to happen anytime soon. In fact, it seems Tatum is already in talks with producer Lauren Shuler Donner about the project.

He recently told MTV News:

I met with Lauren Shuler Donner. And I would love it. Gambit is really the only X-Man I’ve ever loved. I mean I’ve loved them all, they’re all great, but I guess from being down south – my dad’s from Louisiana, I’m from Mississippi, Alabama, Florida – I don’t know. I just related to him. He’s just kind of suave… He’s the most un X-Men X-Man that’s ever been in X-Men. Other than maybe Wolverine, who’s like the anti-hero. He’s a thief. He’s not even a hero. He’s kind of walking the line of grey… He loves women and drinking and smoking and stuff so he’s just a cool guy who happens to have a moral center… I hope it [comes together]. You never know it’s a weird industry. If the stars align, I would die to play it. I’m already working on the accent. It’s crappy at the moment.

There’s a chance the character could appear in “X-Men: Apocalypse,” but that remains to be seen. Considering the number of characters who were excised from “Days of Future Past,” I wouldn’t start banking on that just yet. Do you think Channing Tatum is the right guy to play Gambit? Who would you like to see tackle the role?

Oh hell no! First he was rumored for He-Man now this?! It’s bad enough that he has already played Duke in the GI Joe films. I could definitely see Evans in the role. I didn’t hate Kitsch but he certainly didn’t do the character justice either. Hopefully this goes away and they either cast an actor more fitting or just scrap the idea all together.

See I hated him as Duke in the first film but loved him in the second. It was almost like two different characters. His camaraderie with Roadblock was a highlight of the opening.

I think Kitsch was just fine. There are definitely better choices than Tatum. :)

Kitsch was a perfectly good Gambit; he just had the bad luck to get stuck in a terrible movie that had no idea what to do with his character.

I actually liked Kitsch in the role, but he wasn’t given enough to do at all. But yeah much better choices than Tatum. I have to think about who though.

Ok I got Jared Padalecki for a straight actor, but I have Matt Mullins (Johnny Cage, MK Legacy) for a martial artist actor.

You’ve got my vote for Luke Evans as Gambit. I recently saw Fast and Furious 6 for the first time and the first thing I thought afterward was, “He’d make a great Gambit.” He’s got the look and acting chops to pull it off, but it looks like were stuck with Channing Tatum who doesn’t seem to fit the role well at all.

He’d be decent. I think he’d make a better Strange though.

Idk. I always wanted to see Liam Neeson as Dr Strange, with him being one of the older Marvel heroes. Plus I think it’d sound badass hearing Neeson shouting out magic spells and incantations. lol but that’s just me.

In any event, I just hope they get the right person to play gambit. That was always my favorite x man as a kid.
