I read an interview of Cormac, and he states that an asteroid, not a nuclear explosion, is what has caused the massive destruction depicted in “The Road”.

I’m assuming you didn’t read the novel… Yes i agree that casting Charlize (as wife / mother) for a role which was a mere paragraph in the book is bullshit (that’s hollywood for you), BUT this isn’t a movie in the vain of 28 days Later or Will Smith’s, idiotic CG animated I am Legend…. The reason the world is covered in ash is never explained (nor does it have to be). It could be nuclear, asteroid, doesn’t matter… And the cannibals only exist due to a lack of edible resources. They aren’t monsters, but are mere humans trying to stay alive… In short, the studios are playing up what normally sells… Bluntly put, it’s a simple, human story about a father trying to keep his son alive in a world that’s dying off. Nothing more. Nothing less… Skip the movie. Read the book.

I’ve read the book and think it has potential to be a good movie. Mortensen could be good in the lead. The wife’s appearances in the book are few but perhaps the screenplay will expand on the man’s past. I wonder who’ll play the boy. Has to be skinny.
