Christopher Nolan Rules Out the Joker’s Return, Penguin, and Mr. Freeze for Batman 3

If Christopher Nolan has his way (and he’s gonna, the studio would be nuts to not to let him have his way every which way he wants it until the cows come home, or at least until his films stop making $100 million bucks in its opening week, which is probably not anytime soon with “Inception” on the horizon), then the Joker’s return for “Batman 3″ (with someone else replacing the late Heath Ledger) is completely and absolutely out of the question. He also adds that the Penguin and Mr. Freeze have not been ruled out of “Batman 3″, but there isn’t any mention of Catwoman, which gives us all hope Rachel Weisz might eventually show up in skintight pleather some day.

Talking to the UK’s Empire Magazine (via Dark Horizon), on newsstands now for you reading types, Nolan also confirms that he has not officially signed on to “Batman 3″, though his brother Jonah is actively working on the script with David Goyer and one presumes that means it’s only a matter of formality.

According to Nolan, his third “Batman” movie won’t just be a stand-alone film, filler material if you will, but the third entry in what he envisions as a trilogy that will bring Batman full circle from “Batman Begins”, which certainly sounds like he intends for this to be his final film in the series.

And finally, he also talks about the upcoming “Superman” reboot, which Nolan has famously been attached to as a “Godfather”, meaning he’ll probably end up producing and having a huge say in the script, which his “Batman” writer David Goyer will be the frontman on. He also seems to indicate that Goyer’s pitch for the reboot, which Warner Bros. has set them to develop, will be going the “Batman Begins” route, with a darker version of the Man of Steel than we’ve seen before onscreen. I still don’t know how that would work (Supes ain’t nicknamed “The Big Boy Scout” for nothing, you know), but I’m sure if anyone could make it work, Nolan is probably your best bet.

As for those hoping for a Batman-Superman crossover — you can forget about it. Nolan doesn’t think it would work, and has no plans for it.

Meanwhile, Nolan is finishing up his obligations to “Inception”, which he envisions as taking another few months. It’s only after that’s done that he says he can start working on his next project, which is likely “Batman 3″.

'So, yeah, I'm probably coming back for part 3, guys. Probably. Maybe. I'm sure. Well...'

That's a good point. I'm not sure if DH edited their original post, or if I read it wrong in the first place, but I've edited our post to reflect this.

I tried to post and it didnt so I'm doing the short version.

First I don't think a “Dark Superman” movie really means SUpes will be dark, but the subject matter he deals with will be alot heavier than Lex Luthor's plans for realestate takeovers and such.

As for a Batman flick. I actually agree that going with Hush could be a great idea simply because it's new and someone we haven't seen. He's a great villain for the Nolanverse. That said I think and escalated gang war with Bats caught in the middle would be the best route. The vacuum caused by the events of BB and DK would have the rest of the mobs desperate for control and to get rid of Batman. They'd hire Deathstroke, Lady SHiva, Deadshot, Caine, and finally Bane to take out each other and Batman. Have Black Mask show up as someone trying to take it all over, and find out that Bane orchestrated it all to wear down the Bat so that he could break him.

Sounds great… if you want a 4 hour movie on your hands. Besides, only the true batman fans know who most of those characters are. Regular people who never really followed the batman mythos would be clueless.

Most people had no idea who Ra’s Al Ghul was either unless they watched the animated series and that worked out. With Hush the mystery is part of the fun of the character, and the others are pretty much just hired killers, not much needs to be said other than name and showing their M.O.

@Dedpool,that sounds great and is very close to canon so I'm cool with that. I don't ever want to see the villains teaming up,villains vs villains vs Batman.I'd love to see total madness. A prison break from Arkahm would be sick!!!!! This would really wear Bat's down thats why I like to see Talia there as an enemy but turns out to help Bats but is not a love interest. I originally wanted HUSH in too I thought it'd be a fresh idea,I thought Denzel Washington would be a great HUSH,he'd have to get in major shape though. It's done all the time in the comics but I just don't know if Nolan has the ability to balance out so many characters. As far as the Penguin, that's easy,he could easily be a respected business man/politician in Gotham who secretly runs the mob and has his hands in everything so deep that to take him out would unravel the whole city.I'd make the Penguin extremely clean and dapper, kissing babies, and contributes a lot to Gotham and the people love him but he's completely dirty under all his supposed nobility. As far as Superman I agree, the the tone should be bright at the beginning like the old Goyer/Christopher Reeves Superman but change to a dark “Nolanesque” tone when “Doomsday” or “Braniac” arrives and they're fight.

I like the Penguin idea, though I'd actually not have him be yeat another mob boss but an arms dealer supplying the mobs with new more hightech weaponry. And of course he'd have an affinity for birds. LoL. Denzel as Hush would be sweet. And if not him Chiwitel Ejiofor. And if you just want to stick to cannon and make him white, Thomas Jane.

I agree that a Superman movie should start bright, and then just get dark and put the man of steel through some serious paces.

Batman dying in the third installment only to be taken over by nightwing? how the hell are they going to pull an adult Dick Greyson out of their ass? Plus, this is hollywood, not Final Crisis. Batman can not die. how would the justice league movie work?

    Picture this….

Dustin Hoffman playing the ventrillaquist and his mofia leading puppet scareface…

The Penguin is not such a far-fetched character; just a deformed aristocrat. Not only would he make a great adversary for Batman, but for alter-ego Bruce Wayne as well…
