Via the Playlist, it looks like Clive Owen is returning to his “Shoot’em Up” form by joining the Jason Statham-fronted action film “The Killer Elite”, based on the novel “The Feathermen” by Ranulph Fiennes. Although when you think action star you don’t immediately think of Owen, the actor has actually been in a ton of films in the genre, having starred in the aforementioned “Shoot’em Up”, one of those ridiculously over-the-top and cartoony action movies, “Sin City”, and more recently, Tom Twyker’s “The International”.
“The Killer Elite” centers around former members of a British special forces unit that find themselves being hunted down by assassins. Statham will play a former Navy Seal who is forced out of retirement to save his closest friend, possibly played by Owen. The original book by Fiennes was about a vigilante group dedicated to solving crimes that the police could not, and this particular case involved the murder of four former SAS soldiers. I have no idea why Statham is a former Navy Seal in the movie, but I suppose that’s to help sell the film Stateside?
Originally slated to shoot sometime last year, the film is now looking at a possible 2010 start date. If the hiring of Owen is in fact true, it looks like the film is finally moving beyond the “get the leading man attached” stage, which means it’s that much closer to going into actual production.
