Columbia Confirms Doc Savage Movie with Shane Black

A good five months or so after AICN told the world about it, Columbia Pictures has officially announced that Shane Black (“Lethal Weapon”) will be co-writing and directing a “Doc Savage” movie, with Neal Moritz producing through his (ironically titled) Original Films banner. I say ironic, as Moritz has been responsible for an obscene amount of remakes and reboots over the years. No word on a plot, or if the character will be kept in his ’30s or ’40s roots or, as I suspect, “modernized” for the kids of today.

Black, a former actor turned screenwriter and now director (as well as being a pulp fiction nut), will write the script with Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry for Columbia Pictures.

If Doc Savage is handled in same serious way Indy Jones Raiders/Temple of Doom movies were, this could be a big hit for movie fans. Doc Savage IS the ultimate adventurer, the FIRST superhero–though his physical strength and mental “power” of deduction and wisdom comes from scientific training and not any supernatural result. He’s a physical giant of strength and endurance, his knowledge and wisdom attributes that enable him to travel to the ends of the earth fighting evil.
