Conan’s Thulsa Doom Gets His Own Movie

Written by Nix | July 21st, 2008 | 1 Comment |

Hey, if Conan is going to get a remake, why shouldn’t his villain get his own movie, too? Well okay, so maybe the idea of a Conan remake won’t make you believe in miracles again (if anything, it’ll probably elicit the opposite reaction, seeing as how the 1982 original still holds up to this day), but how about a “Conan” spin-off about the early days of “Conan’s” villain, Thulsa Doom, originally played by James Earl Jones? Except this new, younger version of Thulsa Doom will be a nicer, kindler Djimon Hounsou. And he’ll love kittens, to boot. Well, maybe really small snakes.

Variety has the probably-never-gonna-happen news for ya:

Djimon Hounsou has partnered with Dynamite Entertainment to star in and produce a bigscreen feature about immortal sorcerer Thulsa Doom, a central figure in the Conan the Barbarian and Kull comicbooks.

Character will be featured in his own comicbook series, published by Dynamite, an imprint of Dynamic Forces, next year.

He originally appeared in the Robert E. Howard pulp story “Delcardes’ Cat,” published in the 1930s.

Doom was portrayed by James Earl Jones in 1982’s “Conan the Barbarian.”

Planned pic will showcase the origins of the flawed hero and show how his road to hell was paved with good intentions.

No one has rushed over to grab the movie version yet, so the idea might not even get off the ground. Then again, the surest way to get a movie made nowadays is to make a comic book first, and this seems to be where Hounsou and company are headed.

In any case, I never thought Thulsa Doom was all that bad of a guy. Sure, he made himself into a God and made people worship him, but come on, the guy was just trying to get himself a little sumthin’ sumthin’. And when you’re as ugly as he was, you gotta do whatever you can to nab the ladies. Am I right or am I right, guys?

The 1982 film was a bloody abomination. Granted it was well suited for folks who WERE NOT familiar with the Robert E. Howard Conan books and chronology. The character of Thulsa doom WAS NOT Conan’s “arch enemy”. Thulsa doom was a villian who was the nemesis of another Robert E. Howard hero…”Kull of Atlantis” (and we won’t EVEN discuss the horrendous film adaptation of that starring Kevin Sorbo). Conan’s arch enemy was a sorcerer named “Thoth-Amon”. They duked it out over a number of the books.

Just ONCE, please….just ONCE will SOMEONE do a faithful adaption of a Robert E. Howard character. I shudder to think what they are going to do to “Solomon Kane”, Howard’s English swordsman, in the upcoming film adaptation.
