Cuttthroats and Scallywags Abound in First Trailer for Starz’s Pirate Drama Black Sails

Toby Stephens in BLACK SAILS

Although it comes with the stamp of Michael Bay, the first trailer for the Starz Channel’s pirate drama “Black Sails” doesn’t really look all that much like a Michael Bay blow’em up, and that’s probably because he’s only an executive producer. What does that mean, exactly? Who knows. It could just be that his company is making this, so his name goes out on top, being famous (or notorious, depending on your perspective) and all.

“Black Sails” is a prequel TV series to the Robert Louis Stevenson novel “Treasure Island”, and will follow Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) 20 years before the events of that book. Since the show is on the Starz Channel, home of “Spartacus”, you can bet your butt there will be plenty of bloodletting and sex. It’s a good thing, then, that the pirate’s port of call is full of cutthroats and prostitutes. Does it look like a decent “Spartacus” replacement to you? Hard to tell by this SFW trailer.

Flint, the most brilliant and feared pirate captain of his day, takes on a fast-talking young addition to his crew who goes by the name of John Silver, who has stolen a map to a Spanish Treasure galleon that Flint is after. Threatened with extinction on all sides, they fight against the British Royal Navy for the survival of New Providence Island, the most notorious criminal haven of its day – a debauched paradise teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers, a place defined by both its enlightened ideals and its stunning brutality.

The show will star Luke Arnold, Toby Stephens, Zach McGowan, Hannah New, and Jessica Parker Kennedy.

The 8-episode first season premieres in 2014.
