D.C. Movie Universe Round-Up: Justice League, Superboy, and Man of Steel

Superboy Comic Book

Will we finally get a “Superboy” movie? (Personally I’m hoping for a “Supergirl” movie first, but maybe that’s just me. Superpowered chicks in short skirts are just preferable to a teenage boy in tights.)

All roads are certainly clear for such a movie, now that Warner Bros. has officially won the rights to the character in a new legal ruling that “affirmed a contested 2001 agreement between the estate of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and DC Comics”. Click on the link to read the full ruling if you’re interested in that. The takeaway is that Warner Bros. can now move forward on a “Superboy” movie if they so chooses.

Of course, talks of a “Superboy” movie are premature, since everything, it seems, hinges on how Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” performs at the box office. Then again, given just how great “Man of Steel” is tracking and the reactions of fanboys and non-fanboys alike to the film’s recent trailers, I’m going to go out on a limb and predict a $1 billion dollar opening weekend. I know, crazy, but I’m willing to risk it.

Given the wacky nature of D.C.’s rebooted “New 52” Universe, I’m clueless what version of Superboy could possibly land his own movie, but I’m sure you guys will have your own thoughts.

Meanwhile, it’s been mostly confirmed that Lex Luthor will appear in Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel”, though no one knows in what capacity. One thing’s for sure, his Lexcorp building will play some part in the movie, if these screen grabs from the recent trailer are any indication. That’s Lex for ya, he’s all red, white and blue and patriotic like that.

Plus, here’s another look at actress Rebecca Buller, playing the female version of Superman’s pal Jimmy Olsen. Or, er, Jenny Olsen now, I guess. Oh boy, Clark Kent’s gonna have to be careful pal’in around with her, work place sexual harassment laws being what they are nowadays, even for the man of steel.

And in case you missed it, here’s a new “Man of Steel” pic with Supes versus the U.S. army:

And finally, is Batman writer/former go-to comic book guy David Goyer not only writing, but also directing the “Justice League” movie as well? That’s according to John Campea, the former editor/owner of TheMovieBlog, who has since moved on to bigger and better things.

Now before you pooh-pooh this, keep in mind that Goyer has been a really good soldier at Warner Bros., and he’s got superhero geek cred out the ass, having co-written all three of Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies, along with the “Blade” films. If Warner Bros. fails to land, say, a big name to direct their “Justice League” movie (that they’re hoping to land in theaters by 2015), Goyer wouldn’t be an entirely bad choice if you ask me.
