Dane Cook as the Riddler in Batman 3? Only in my Dreams.

Batman Begins 3 Movie, Comic Book Movie News — By Nix on November 11, 2009

Or is that nightmare? I can’t remember which. In any case, MTV, as they are wont to do, recently asked comedian/actor Dane Cook what comic book character he’d most like to play, and Cook mentioned The Riddler for the Nolan “Batman” films. Or as Cook puts it, “that would be bad-ass.” Check out the full interview below.

Dane Cook is a pretty hit-and-miss comedian. You either love him or you don’t. There doesn’t seem to be any real middle ground when it comes to his comedy. I liked him in the beginning — his energy onscreen is awesome. But I haven’t really followed him in the last few years, mostly because I’m all about Brian Regan now, and Cook’s crazy, flipping out onstage doesn’t do it for me anymore.

But hey, Cook as the Riddler in a “Batman 3″? I guess that would be okay. To be honest with you, I’d prefer never to see the Riddler in any of Nolan’s “Batman” movies. Ever. But maybe that’s just me. MTV recently took a poll of their readers, and the Riddler seems to be the primary choice. Then again, since when does anyone take anything MTV viewers “want” seriously?

UGH1 NO! NO! NO! I’d be careful with the character of the Riddler as he’s very hard to make him come off, campy, or goofy. Though “The Batman” did a good job of it, as well as “Batman:TAS” but that Riddler was less about riddles and more about games. Regardless. NO DANE COOK in Nolan Batfilms. NEVER!

I’d rather be molested than have Dane Cook as the Riddler

  • Ok, Ive been saying this since the last movie ended. The only batman character that can be brought into film and not be a complete slap to what theyve done so far…….IS THE RIDDLER! Now Wait, I know what your saying. Schumacher crushed all of us with what he did, but let me tell you. I can sell it to you, or at least put up a setting for you to think about. ok Check it. Ive posted it on many places…But not here:

    1. Jim Carrey resprises the role but thats the end of the connection.
    2. Take Jim Carrey’s look from The Number 23. Think Dark. Him in the window with the saxophone and tattoos on his arms. Nothing silly just heavy dark lines.
    3. Take Batman to the next step of his Character and Give us the Detective Batman. Instead of over the top action, Trust Nolan to create a riveting brain exploding story that he can drive home with a feeling like Memento. Heavy detecting mixed with the psychological breakdown of two great minds battling.
    4. Show the descent of the Riddler and him restructuring himself as a mastermind.
5 (The most controversial point: But I trust when i say this…the reader isn’t an idiot and thinks I’m a gore porn addict) Set up the Riddler and his puzzle in the same light as the Saw movies. Put the victim at the end of the rope of his intelligence, and then put batman at the other end having to correct the victims mistakes and not being able to make them himself. FLex the brain muscle.
    6. What no Joker!? – I would honestly show a scene of batman talking to the joker through the door to the joker who you dont get to see but you know its him covered in shadows. Batman perhaps trying to get a handle on the psychosis of the Riddler and having to turn to someone just as mad to get hip to the game. (this point is completely fan service but could be an interesting point to turn to…completely optional)

People focus on what happened in the last movie where Carey was the Riddler too much. I have faith in his acting ability should Directors and writers choose to use them. If everything was perfect with the world, Jim Carey would get the Riddler job, and Dane Cook was the Question from DC comics. NOW THAT its a good match..hmmmm

That’s an interesting idea. I agree that they need to get into the detective side of Batman. However I really don’t want to see Carrey as the Riddler, even if it was completely different. It’d be like having Jack Nicholson reprise the Joker. Been there done that. Your take on the Riddler, at least in looks, sounds like the one from the “Joker” graphic novel from Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo. I liked that book and if you haven’t read it you should as it’s very much a close approximation of what the Nolan Batman Rogues might look like.

But I do have to disagree with the Riddler being the “ONLY” villain that could work in that universe. First of all when ideas for the Penguin first started popping up with both Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Bob Hoskins possibly being considered, they had the idea of a British arms dealer who dressed very well and had an affinity for birds. Works well in the Nolanverse. Could it carry a story all on it’s own, no, but that’s easily helped. Add Talia Al Ghul out to get revenge for her father, throw in the complicated relationship they end up with and thats one idea.

Another is have it be open season on Batman now. With the Mobs getting desparate and hiring mercenaries and hitmen to do the job. You could have Deadshot or Deathstroke, Lady Shiva, Cain, and finally BANE! Have him going up against these guys, with a bounty of like 5 mil and they’d all be trying to take him out. with him trying to survive AND keep innocents out of danger. And have Bane be the one behind it all. Setting up the contacts with the mercs, the idea for the bounty, EVERYTHING. All to meet his most worthy opponent. And of course the whole time Bats is fighting he’s trying to figure out whats going on.

My last idea had to do with Black Mask taking over the criminal underground as a shadowy figure head that would hire some of the same killers to try and get rid of Batman, all the while building a power base in the city. Batman would have his hands full trying to figure out who Black Mask is, and survive the attempts on his life which are becoming bigger, and more destructive with each encounter.

Oh and I’d put Jim Caviezel or Guy Pierce in the part of The Question if you were to have him in a movie. I HATE DANE COOK, and he would destroy a Batman film. He’s just not serious enough, and not a good actor either.

  • DedPool I nominate you for the deadpool films. You get “IT” I swear we gotta meet up for a beer sometime.

Now, onto business. I for one see what your saying about Carey “been there, done
that”, I just dont think he got to play the riddler, and i know he can do it.

ALso I see the penguin thing and PSH being a good candidate, but i feel that any movie made with that premise would be more like a movie with batman throwm in it. My friend has me on this new kick because he’s super analytical and while i dont agree with him ever, I throw it to you. He says that movies that deal with characters that have a history have a tendency to create stories that within themselves erase the history of the character. He is bitching already about Sherlock Holmes being a prime example of his point. He says its too Wild Wild West like and ruining the character of holmes in literature. While i tell him to shut the f up and watch the movie I have to say that I would probably like the penguin idea, but in the back of my head I would be thinking about what he said.

I want nothing more in life than to see a live action Bane, other than directing it myself. Talk about a character being misused in this mythology. Bane is my favorite character ever so anything that leads to him is good to me. Except Batman and Robin!

Lastly I have to say, I dont hate Dane Cook. lol! I love dane cook and im actually watching Vicious Circle while im typing this but none the less. I see talent in him. Good Luck Chuck was a pay check, but My bestfriends girl was a taste of goodness, and his role in Mr Brooks made me happy. At least with him. I think he is the best candidate to go the Carrey route at this point. I think Jim Carrey is an amazing actor and should be in more movies. I think Dane Cook as an actor is on the up and up and could become a valuable asset.

Ok not the end: lol. I for one am still wondering what the hell people in hollywood are doing. Milo Ventimiglia said that he would be Nightwing a YEAR AND A HALF AGO…..Why is an indie movie not in the works RIGHT NOW????

    ALways a pleasure…Uno~

  • By the way Dedpool, I think this site should hire us to have intellectual convos about film. Ive honestly wondered if you have a job with the site.

    • Dedpool says:

That is the compliment of all compliments dude. Thanks. And thankls for the Deadpool one too. I Understand what your friend is saying, I really do, but the thing with adapting literature to film is that not everything translates well. Guy Ritchie did his research and he’s looking at a side of the literary Holmes that doesn’t get to see the light of day much. The action oriented, eccentric sleuth. Not the stuffy, pipe-smoking hard ass we’ve known for so long. Same with Lord of the Rings. Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh made major changes to the character of Aragorn in the film, and you know what they were for the better. I liked the reluctant hero, afraid to fail because of his ingrained human weaknesses, as opposed to the man that emraced his destiuny almost at the very start of the true quest. In the book he has the sword reforged on that first arrival to Rivendell. I like the fact that in the film it wasn’t until he had no other choice that he embraced that destiny.

It’d be great if every adaptation was exactly like the book. That said I’td also make every movie like 4 hrs long. You have to amp things up (unless it’s a drama) or you lose people’s interest. It’s a matter of taking what was there and making it more spectacular for the eyes because film is a VISUAL medium and therefore needs to catch the eye as much as excercise the brain a lil.

As for my ideas, you lost what I was saying about the movie. The villains wouldn’t be the main focus. Batman and his survival detective work would be. Characters like Deadshot, Lady Shiva, Cain, and so forth don’t need much developmetn. They’re assassins and merc. That’s all you need to know except what they can do. Bane on the other hand you could easily sped time building on. As for Cook. He just isnt funny to me. I really don’t think he’s on Carrey’s level. He’s doesn’t have the range that Carrey has built over the years and he’s just kinda one note. People say the same about Ryan Reynolds but at least he doesn’t do the same type of movies, and he’s an actor first that happens to be funny. Cook is a comedian trying to make the transition and I just don’t think outside of comedy he will do well.

ANd finally a Nightwing movie with Milo wouldn’t be that bad. Though Jared Padalecki would be a better choice in my book. But hey it doesn’t matter hollywood won’t listen.

  • NO, holllywood wont listen. They’ll never listen. It’s like me and my brother always say, “You tell me you want to make money, but I dont believe you!”

I think that every comic book character that isn’t popular enough to get a full steam release in theatres should at least get the indie treatment. Most have great stories that when put together with someone who actually wants to work their way up the ranks in hollywood, and not just cash in on a big name franchise, would be amazing. I honestly think Jared Padalecki would be a good choice as well. I just think with some of these fan bases DC and Marvel need to throw out some non huge movies that introduce their characters that aren’t Big.

Ive actually thought that most of the animated movies up to the last two were better than their film counterparts, and not because of more action but because they were flat out better films. Dark Knight excluded from judgment, as well as Watchmen. I think that the Superman/Doomsday animation (with a little reworked dialogue) would have been the perfect script for Superman Returns. I honestly think that the doomsday storyline is the only way to bring Supes back the way he should be.

I dont think cook is Carrey status yet…but I think in time he could be. Right now, no way. Alot of performers have been stepping up to the bat recently. Common has turned out to be a good actor. Mos Def is definitely rocking the pants off some rolls ever since 16 blocks. Im just all for new blood. We can only hang on to the greats for so long and I worry for the next generation of actors.

P.S. DC should fire Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern and MAKE HIM PLAY THE FLASH. GOD I SWEAR DC IS STUPID! I love ryan reynolds but anyone in their right minds knows he’s not lantern. I say this knowing ill enjoy the movie because I cant get enough Ryan Reynolds lol! I would have picked the guy from Angel personally. GOD I HATE ANGEL! But I like the actor.

    • Dedpool says:

Yeah having some idy flicks that don’t need a giant budget would be great. Nightwing, Green Arrow(Supermax was an awesome idea), hell even Flash (and I agree Reynolds is better for Flash-Wally West version than for GL).

On the new blood front, Mos Def has been acting for almost 15 years (starting on Cosby Mysteries) and he’s actually been consistantly good, whetheer the m movie is good or not. Common is definitely stepping up. “Wanted”, “Smoking Aces” “American Gangster,” and now “Date Night.” I’m all for new talent too, just not feeling Cook. But let’s agree to disagree on that minor issue.

The DC Animated stuff has been great. I think both “Wonder WOman” and “GL:First Flight” could also be the launching points and inspiration for live action versions. “Wonder Woman” is almost perfect the way it is, “First Flight” nees some minor tweaking on a major issue. Swap the green/yellow element thing for the “emotional spectrum” idea. Only just hint at there being a full spectrum and make the Green=willpower statement. Throw Jim Caviezel in as Hal, and Hugo Weaving as Sinestro and whatever you do after that I’m in. I originally wanted David Boreanaz too, then Nathan Fillion, but any of those three would be good. Boreanaz already vocied Hal in “New Frontier” and was great until I heard Chris Meloni (Law and Order: SVU) voice him in “First FLight” and I was like HELLYEAH!!!

  • Definitely, across the board. Til we meet again….I actually was looking into the writing for the site thing as well and saw that they do have openings for writers. I’m currently becoming familiar with Wordpress, and sending in a resume. We should team up lol! Til we meet on the boards again.

    • Dedpool says:

Good luck. I sent in my stuff, but they only need full-time writers. SO I just sned in a review or something everyonce in a while. My review for “First FLight” was posted. =-D I was ecstatic.
