Danny Boyle is Considering 28 Weeks Later Sequel

28 Months Later Movie, Horror Movie News — By Nix on July 17, 2007

Danny Boyle’s zombies (I think he’s since gave in to calling them zombies now) came, saw, and ate heartedly in “28 Days Later”, and they did likewise in “28 Weeks Later”. And now, Danny Boyle is considering returning to the land of the dead in a sequel to “Weeks”, or so one would assume in this interview with SlashFilm. I had always intended to see “28 Weeks Later”, but for one reason or another, never got around to it. (I’ll probably catch it on DVD.) At the end of the film, it was shown that the infection had escaped Britain, and was now poised to munch on the French and most of Europe. That was where a second sequel (third installment in the franchise) would take place if one should be made, which in itself is in doubt considering the lackluster box office of “Weeks”.

Here’s what Boyle said about his ideas for a third installment:

“I’ve got an idea for it. I didn’t think I would have, because I didn’t want to do the second one. I did do some second unit shooting for them one weekend, just to get myself out of the cutting room. It’s been so long doing this film [Sunshine],” said Boyle. “And I really enjoyed it, doing something trashy like Zombies killing people. That’s basically what I shot all weekend and I was like “˜WOW, this is great! You just come in and kill him! That’s what we’re going to shoot today.”

Instead of continuing the story in Europe, Boyle is eyeing Russia.

“It’s to do with Russia actually. It’s to do with that part of the world. NOT FRANCE. The second film hints that it gets to France eventually, and wipes out the French. But this third idea is actually more to do with Russia, but that’s actually all I can say,” said Boyle. “I don’t know whether it will happen.”

Again, there’s no guarantee that a third installment will even be considered, considering how poorly “28 Weeks Later” did. But if Boyle was willing to lower the budget, and maybe even go back to the budget he had with the original, then whose to say a third couldn’t be made at a decent price?

(And what would they call it, anyway? “28 Months Later”? That would seem appropriate, but then again, we know how wacky the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” sequels have gotten because of people trying to be too clever by a half with the titles…)

Man, this movie was great. I really wanna see how the virus really ends. It didn’t end in this movie, and it should, if it is supposed to.

Indeed. I really enjoyed both movies in the franchise. I kind of hate it when a movie leaves things open right at the end because it makes you imagine and speculate on what happened or what will happen. Especially with a movie that is good, then you have to wait until a sequel is done.
As in the case with 28 Weeks Later, the cliffhanger at the end made me question what happened to the kids and the dude from Lost. Was it the Andy that did it or did they land and take a break and get bumrushed by some infected?
I really do hope a 3rd movie is made and I hope the writers tell the story of if anything was made out of Andy being a carrier.

And I agree with what a few other people said before me about the 28 Days Later franchise being good. I just rented and saw Resident Evil Extinction last night and couldn’t believe how they messed up RE in the movie genre. Paul WS Anderson claims he played the RE games so he knows about it, but I question if he just played the games for 5 minutes.

I hae seen alot of people saying that the sequel to 28 weeks should show the infection spreading to other countries. but does noone recall that in 28 days when Selina ad Jim first met she was explaining to him that shortly after the evacuation of Lonon there were reports of the infection spreading as far as New York.

  • Nathan says:

I remember them saying something like that in the movie but all i kno is if they dont make a sequel to this i will be very upset because ive fallen in love with these movies.

  • Jasmine says:

I think that there should be a third movie that happens after 28 days later but before 28 weeks later.
It could tell us how Don, his wife and the other survivours (now dead) made their way to house in which they were staying.

Or it could be completely different it could be years later with Andy and Tammy grown up, Andy could have found a girlfreind and kissed her because the virus is passed on by saliva, she could become infected infect others and BAM everyone is dead. The survivours could include Andy, Tammy and even Hannah from the first one.—-Just a thought but hey without random thoughts there would be no great films such as 28 days or 28 weeks later.

Here’s my idea for 28 months later.

The rage virus spreads across Europe. Its progress is slow as it traverses Siberia in winter. Farther south, the world community repeatedly nukes a line stretching southwards to the Himalayas, leaving a wide enough wasteland that the infected generally cannot cross it without dying of starvation first. At the eastern edge, there are outposts.

The virus has also spread through the middle east. The desert stops many of the infected, but the path through Lebanon to Israel leads into Africa. Eventually, they fall to the infected and the movie focuses on the Suez Canal along with the monitoring stations in Siberia, the Himalayas and eastern deserts. Overall, the movie focuses on the strategic command rather than ground troops… we see a lot of gore, but the plot is driven by the strategy and the whole movie begins with the trauma of the world community being forced to nuke southern Russia, the Ukraine, etc..

i have to say the idea made by Zultan sounds kinda crap and very boring doin that wud just ruin it u have to think of how it spread etc… coz in the last one it only crossed to paris (well what we no of) but how will it cross?the only idea i cud fink off was that one of the infected got on a boat of sumkind- infects the other passengers and then it turns up at a nother country, just before the infected die of starvation. They get loose and eat all the people on the island that they land on are attacked and become infected.– That is the only way that i can think off.

ok let me set you guy straight with the ending of 28 weeks later, it hints that tammy andy and jim are head, the helicopter have seen “for dad” in his helicopter when hes talking to the soldier on the roof. Therefore when you see the “for dad” in the wreckage of the helicopter it hints that they were either shot down or maybe something else happened..

    • rog says:

correct kev, ur right wiv that helicopter piece, maybe when you see the shot of the downed copter at the end the virus is already in france via the channel tunnel,im surprised nobody has thought of that and it doesnt have to be human infected getting through to france, what about the monkeys in 28 days l8ter? or if the rage victims get too hungry they might be eating rats and stuff and the rats getting infected! bring back the monkeys! sequel is very much nedeed for us fans and the soundtrack set shivers down the spine.these movies in my opinion rival mr.romeros dead films and miles better than i am legend.
