Danny Boyle to Direct Slumdog Millionaire
So I guess we’ll just have to wait for “28 Months Later”, huh? Anyways, that seems like what’s going to happen since Variety reports that Danny Boyle is going to make a movie called “Slumdog Millionaire” as his post-“Sunshine” movie. The plot:
Based on true events and scripted by Simon Beaufoy (”The Full Monty”), it’s the story of an illiterate street kid from Mumbai who wins the jackpot on the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”
Wow, sounds like, um, fun times?
British kid Dev Patel will play the lead, and the film will start shooting in Mumbai on November 5.
More:
Boyle commented, “It’s a love story set in the most extreme city on earth. The Maximum City “” Mumbai. From its slums, a kid challenges for the biggest prize on world television.”
“All he knows is that the girl that he loves “” and whom he has lost in the chaos of Mumbai “” watches the show every night … if he can stay on the show as long as possible, he might find her again.”
“Slumdog Millionaire” will be Boyle’s first film with Film4 since “A Life Less Ordinary,” “Trainspotting” and “Shallow Grave.”
Sounds like a Walt Disney movie, and not something from the guy who did “Trainspotting”. But then again, Boyle has never shied away from exploring other genres. He went from a trippy druggie movie to a zombie movie to a sci-fi actioner. So why not a kid’s movie next? That’s the sign of a talented director.
