You can add former “Harry Potter” wizard David Thewlis to the growing cast of Summit’s “Red 2”, their sequel to the surprise 2010 hit starring Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman as geriatric spies brought out of the cold by killers intent on silencing them.
Of the four, Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren and John Malkovich are back for the second go-round, along with Mary Louise Parker, and they’ll be joined by newcomers Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Byun-Hun Lee. And, well, Thewlis, too, now.
The sequel will find the ex-spies-turned-spies again plying their trade in Europe, where, we assume, shenanigans and Tomfoolery will be the order of the day. Hard to believe, but “Red” actually started life as a grim and gritty comic book one-shot by Warren Ellis. The movie version, on the other hand, is a silly action comedy. Go figure.
In the sequel, Thewlis will play “The Frog, an information dealer who got his name by poisoning the water supply at the Kremlin using a poisonous Amazonian frog.”
Sounds like a nice enough chap.
Dean Parisot, who directed the sci-fi comedy “Galaxy Quest” before spending a whole lot of time on TV (including a couple of stellar episodes of the FX’s “Justified’) is directing, with production due to start lensing later this fall in Montreal.
