David Yates Swings Over to Tarzan Movie

Tarzan Book Cover“Harry Potter’s” David Yates has found a new muse, and this one’s a tad older than his previous subject. Plus, a lot more barechested.

Reports have Yates officially signing on to direct Warner Bros.’ new take on “Tarzan”, based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs character about a man raised by great apes in the wilds of Africa, before he is rediscovered by white people traipsing around the jungle. “Tarzan” has been in the works from producer Jerry Weintraub for years now, with “The Mummy’s” Stephen Sommers originally attached to direct as far back as 2008.

No word on the plot of Yates and Warner Bros.’ version of the popular character, but the filmmaker and studio are apparently already meeting with some pretty big names to slip on the loincloth. Among the actors lining up for the role are new “It” boys Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”), Charlie Hunnam (“Sons of Anarchy” frontman, and Guillermo Del Toro’s upcoming “Pacific Rim”), and Alexander Skarsgård (“True Blood”).

Tom Hardy is said to also be on the filmmaker’s wish list, but no word if he feels the same way.

“Tarzan” last showed up on the big screen in 1999 as a Disney animated movie, and in his own TV series back in 2003 starring “The Walking Dead’s” Sarah Wayne Callies as Jane, who in this incarnation was a big-city cop. Tarzan was played by Travis Fimmel. I think it lasted for one season.

Ok, big fan of the Tarzan ERB books, not a fan of any of the tv shows or movies. First problem, script – lets take away all the great parts of the book and add in a bunch of crap (watch John Carter of Mars for an example). Then lets miscast the main title, lets cast a short guy, a short guy with little to no muscles, cast a guy with muscles, but with no acting ability and have it directed by Bo Derek’s husband.
First, READ THE BOOK!! Yeah, read the part where Jane Porter describes him as a “Forest God” and then go watch Conan with Jason Momoa.
    Nuff said!

I sure hope it’s not another origins one though. I think we all know where he came from. Let’s not retread that.

I think enough people Tarzan well enough that the story could start when the Porters get set ashore. A little than half way through the first book but with enough to a great movie.

i was thinking skipping the first book entirely and move on to another completely.

I hope that they stay true to the books. They are my favorite books and I’d love to see a good film adaptation. I also think Chris hemsworth would make a good Tarzan.
