Reports have Yates officially signing on to direct Warner Bros.’ new take on “Tarzan”, based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs character about a man raised by great apes in the wilds of Africa, before he is rediscovered by white people traipsing around the jungle. “Tarzan” has been in the works from producer Jerry Weintraub for years now, with “The Mummy’s” Stephen Sommers originally attached to direct as far back as 2008.
No word on the plot of Yates and Warner Bros.’ version of the popular character, but the filmmaker and studio are apparently already meeting with some pretty big names to slip on the loincloth. Among the actors lining up for the role are new “It” boys Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”), Charlie Hunnam (“Sons of Anarchy” frontman, and Guillermo Del Toro’s upcoming “Pacific Rim”), and Alexander Skarsgård (“True Blood”).
Tom Hardy is said to also be on the filmmaker’s wish list, but no word if he feels the same way.
“Tarzan” last showed up on the big screen in 1999 as a Disney animated movie, and in his own TV series back in 2003 starring “The Walking Dead’s” Sarah Wayne Callies as Jane, who in this incarnation was a big-city cop. Tarzan was played by Travis Fimmel. I think it lasted for one season.
