Opening with a fantastic medieval version of Steven Spielberg’s beach assault from “Saving Private Ryan” (with swords, shields, fireballs and arrows instead of bullets and machine guns), the Microsoft/Crytek “Ryse: Son of Rome” only gets better from there. That is, if you like gory medieval hack-and-slash gameplay.
As for the story:
“Ryse: Son of Rome” tells the story of the young Roman soldier Marius Titus who witnesses the murder of his family at the hands of barbarian bandits. Seeking revenge, he travels with the Roman army to Britannia where he proves himself a soldier of phenomenal skill and quickly rises through the ranks. As Marius leads the army against the barbarian horde, his quest unravels and he discovers that he must return to Rome to find his vengeance.
The game will also include Cooperative gladiatorial combat in the Coliseum:
The cooperative multiplayer experience in “Ryse: Son of Rome” plunges you into the brutal world of gladiatorial combat, where you enter the Coliseum to fight side-by-side with your friends against an ever-changing array of enemies, to the roar of thousands of spectators.2
Unfortunately if you want a piece of this, you’ll need the Xbox One, because “Ryse: Son of Rome” will be an Xbox One-exclusive title. Which is a bummer, but I guess that’s where gaming is going these days — everyone has gotta have their exclusive titles.
Check out the 7-minute long gameplay demo that was recently revealed over at E3.
