Former “24” and “The Unit” star and All-State insurance pitchman Dennis Haysbert has signed on to play Manute in Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For”, their sequel to 2005’s hit movie based on the series of comic books by Miller.
Haysbert will play Manute, the bruiser character originally played by the late Michael Clarke Duncan in the original, and who has a much bigger role in the follow-up, which will adapt the “A Dame to Kill” storyline. In “Dame”, Dwight (Clive Owen) gets entangled in the affairs of his ex-lover Ava, who is watched over night and day by her husband’s bodyguard, Manute. I’m not sure if Haysbert can bring the same kind of physical menace to Manute that Duncan had, but he’s certainly a great actor.
Says Rodriguez about the casting:
Manute is a character that has been part of the heart of the Sin City tales, and the late Michael Clarke Duncan beautifully established that role onscreen. We could not tell the story of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For without Manute and are thrilled to welcome Dennis Haysbert to the cast.
The man who once bossed Jack Bauer around on TV joins a cast that already includes Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Jaime King, Rosario Dawson, and Jamie Chung (herself replacing Devon Aoki, who played the deadly swordswoman Miho in the 2005 original).
Meanwhile, there’s still no word on who is playing the very pivotal Ava. Either Rodriguez hasn’t cast the role yet, or they’re really doing a great job of keeping it a secret, which is admirable in today’s Interwebs world.
“Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” is currently shooting in Austin.
