Director Guan Hu Wants to Ensnare You in His Design of Death

One website describes the film as a “horror comedy”, while another claims it’s some sort of “absurdist comedy” mixed with a little suspense. Whatever the case may be, Guan Hu’s “Design of Death” intrigues me. There’s definitely enough going on visually to pique my interest, though, to be fair, it doesn’t take much. I am curious to see how the comedy element is worked into the feature, as it doesn’t seem to be present in the embedded trailer. Maybe it’s just me.

Check out this handy synopsis, courtesy of Chinese Films:

Based on the novel by Chen Tiejun, the story takes place in a remote and ancient village in southwest China where people live a traditional life. Niu Jieshi is a village outcast who goes against local rules. He is trapped by the villagers in a “design of death.” When a doctor tries to save Niu, he discovers a surprising secret.

“Design of Death” stars Huang Bo, Ren Dahua, Yu Nan, and Su Youpeng. Look for the film to bow in Chinese theaters on April 28th, 2012. The trailer awaits.

Author: Todd Rigney

Todd was raised on a steady diet of Hollywood blockbusters, late-night Cinemax programming, and USA’s “Up All Night,” which may explain why his taste in movies is more than a little questionable. When he isn’t providing news and reviews for Beyond Hollywood, he can be found lounging lazily on his couch, perched in front of his television, or dwelling in places where direct sunlight can be easily avoided. He's happily married, in his 30's, and totally badass. If you'd like to reach Todd, you can follow him on Twitter or send him email/scoops to todd (at)
