Director’s Cut of Frank Oz’s Little Shop of Horror Headed to Blu-ray

Fact: I adore director Frank Oz’s 1986 musical “Little Shop of Horrors”, and I regret not owning the flick on DVD. After Warner Bros. recalled the disc due to the unauthorized inclusion of the original ending, the price shot through the roof. Thankfully, the powers that be are plotting to unleash “Little Shop of Horrors: The Director’s Cut” on Blu-ray, complete with the restored original ending. And that, my friends, is exceptionally badass.

If you’re unfamiliar with the deleted finale, here’s what it contains:

In the original ending, faithful to the stage version both Seymour and Audrey were killed by Audrey 2. Subsequent scenes showed the plants, grown to enormous size, taking over New York (King-Kong style) and the world. The ending included a new musical number, titled “Don’t Feed the Plants”. After sneak preview audiences hated this ending, it was replaced with the happy one that’s included in all released theatrical/home video versions.

In addition to the extended version of the picture, the Blu-ray will also contain the original theatrical cut, commentary track and introduction to by Frank Oz, a commemorative book, and some trailers. There might be more, of course, but for now, that’s what we know. Look for “Little Shop of Horrors: The Director’s Cut” to arrive here in the States on October 9th, 2012.

I’ll buy that for a dollar!! I loved the original film, but I’ve scene the play (My HS actually performed it) with the original ending. Love the dont feed the plants song…can’t remember if this replaces the mean green mother song or just comes as an epilogue. Either way i’m in. Will it have both endings?

Since they’re claiming the the Blu-ray contains the theatrical cut as well as the extended cut, I’m hoping we’ll get both complete films. I’d like to have both.

I wish I had an opportunity to see the play.
