I would usually ignore this kind of “news”, mostly because it’s pretty standard operating procedure for studios nowadays to start “developing” sequel ideas to films they are hoping and praying (fingers crossed!) will turn out to be a new successful franchise for them, even before the movie even opens.
But with news that Sam Raimi’s “Oz The Great and Powerful” is tracking to be a pretty big hit for the studio over the weekend, a sequel in development looks like it’s not all hot air after all.
Mitchell Kapner, who came up with the idea for the first movie (and shares co-writing credit on the script) has been tapped to bang out a sequel for the studio. Fortunately for Disney, they won’t have to pay anything extra to do a sequel to “Oz”, since the original L. Frank Baum book that the story is based on is in the public domain, which means anyone and their momma can adapt it.
Apparently Disney was so gung-ho about “Oz”, they initially slapped down the bucks for Mitchell to start working on the sequel last month.
The film, starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams, is currently on track to open around $80 million this weekend. You can read Brent’s review of the film here.
No doubt the combination of 3D and shiny, colorful fantasy creatures and landscape will pile in the kids.
