Honestly, I don’t see a “War Machine” spin-off movie happening anytime in the future. Or ever, actually. War Machine will be a good addition to the “Iron Man” franchise, but let’s face it, he’s not Tony Stark. In an interview with Wizard Magazine, Don Cheadle said as much. Cheadle, as you’ll recall, famously replaced Terence Howard in the part of James Rhodes when the latter was tossed aside by Marvel Studios to save some bucks (the saga has been chronicled ad nauseaum on the site, but the gist of it can be found here).
“People have asked [about the “War Machine” spin-off movie] but no one [in authority] has mentioned it as something that’s happening.
“Hopefully, if this one does well, there’ll be another [Iron Man film] with the same people. But there won’t be a [War Machine] spin-off.”
Ol Don kinda contradicted himself a bit there. He says no one has talked to him about it, but then goes on to sound very sure that a spin-off movie won’t happen in the very next sentence. Hunh.
Cheadle and the gang battle it out with the bad guys in their suits of armor when “Iron Man 2” opens May 7, 2010. Co-starring Robert Downey Jr., Mickey Rourke, Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Jon Favreau.
